So fellow hippies, not been on here for a couple of weeks.

12 wks post op.

Check up by stand in consultant, not so good!!!

As still having probs with stairs, socks and cutting toenails, was put through a few checks, conclusion was, despite walking and excersices, my bum cheek muscle, for some reason , has collapsed!!

( I did ask him if he was insinuating I had a saggy arse????)

Benn referred back to origanal surgeon, with recommendation of intensive physio. That's me off work now till Jan.

Am questioning whether I should have had this op, more importantly, should I go ahead with left hip, which I've been told, will need replacing in the future! !!!!

    Joy,

I'm so sorry to hear about your difficulties.  I've never heard of a collapsed butt cheek muscle.  I am also at 12 weeks post-op.  I can go up,stairs normally but I need a lot more practice  going down.  Putting my socks and shoes on is tough but doable.  I'm not sure I'll ever be able to comfortably

cut my toenails on the operated side but I can deal with that.  Hopefully, the

extra physio will get you back on track.

Hello Joy,  I am also 12 weeks on Monday and still limping especially when shopping for more than half an hour and when tired and cannot put sox on. havennot tried cutting toe nails yet but was discharged at 7 weeks,  I saw GP yeaterday and am now waiting for physio!  I am fine and so glad op is behind me but hoped I would be back to normal.  i can sprint along if I use a crutch but was trying to do without.

Still wonderful site isn't it Joy?  I remember you from a few weeks ago I think.

Is this how you have felt all the time?  I am a drama qween but have been better the last few weeks.  No one to act up in front of though so pull myself together quite fast. Is it because you feel you have not progressed as far as you should?  I was relieved to read that you can't put your sox on or cut your nails!  I have to get people on the bus to pull my sox up ( I know them!)...It is a far bigger op than I realsied and others round me don't realise as just say 'You are doing  so well!'

      Smiles.

Yay, I love you're reply. It is how I have felt. It's very difficult to explain to my partner, not only do we live together, but work together. I can't moan at him as he is covering me at work as well as home!!

I'm very impatient! ! Everything should have happened yesterday, not tomorrow! !!!

No, this is new. When I had last doctors appointment he wanted me to start stretching getting my foot over the knee to put shoes and socks on. I lack about an inch getting the bad leg there and had trouble with good one but made it, now the girdle bone part above the hip is hurting, I assume pulled muscle, guess I will stop putting that foot up to see if it gets better, probably ice would help. I have a long shoe horn and elastic shoe strings so I get shoes on easy, then the horn has a bent end that I use to pull the socks up, works good or a back scratcher will nab your sock and you can pull them up. No trouble getting in car, I get in sideways push back bend leg and swing it in, I use the good leg a lot.

      Alice,

I think that no-one without previous experience has an appreciation of just how major hip replacement is - the medical profession do a good job of 'selling' it as a routine 'procedure'.

I know, when I heard that I would be off work for 2-3 months (I work in London, so need extra recuperation to be able to cope with the crowded trains and buses), it seemed extremely long.  When I said that I was not even allowed to put my own socks on for 3 months everyone (including me I must admit) was astounded.

But when I tell people that I have a scar approaching a foot long, that I was awake (spinal, no sedation) to hear the surgeon sawing off the head of my femur, reaming out the socket and femur, removing the marrow, screwing and hammering in the various parts - they get some idea of just what it does entail.

Sadly, the surgeon says that my ceramic socket is in the wrong place, so I am going to have to have another operation to correct that in early January.

So even more time off work, more medication sad, more physio, more pain .... etc.

      Regards

      Graham

Ty for comments, I totally agree with you.

I for one, was so fixated on the 6-12wk recovery time given by both consultant and post op booklet, that I started to think I was either doing something wrong or, just being a wuss!!

Everybody recovers in different ways, this site has made me realise that! !

It depends on so many factors, your age, physical condition before the op, underlying medical health, skill of the surgeon, infection, accidents ...

I love that about 'people on the bus' you must live

in a very rural area, as well as being friends they need

space. You really made me smile, thank you

Oh Hells teeth!  I treid not think too much as to what was actually done.  Your description horrifies ME never mind a non hippie...Why on earth did you choose to be awake????  I am very sorry as said on prevous posts about your problem.  ( An understatement.  I gatjer from your previous posts that you hip was un cemented..I thought mine was but no it wasn't.  I feel for you as yes getting about in London would be fraught witgh danger..I lived and worked in a health club in Barclay Sq for many years.

It is very worrying that you were discharged, despite having the routine x ray, with the cruicla information not picked up on your X-ray.  I am pleased that you have such support from your wife and aren't coping on your own..but in your head at night whilst awake you must feel alone.

You have lots of support now and coming your way.

      Keeping posting.

      Kind REgards,

Thank you Joy.I remember the 6 week stage as I was dying to be able to get the bus as otherwise couldn't get anywhere..no car and on my own..once 6 week came I now fixed on 12 weeks which is MOnday. I walked a fair way this morning and now hurt!  How long does it take to be 100% ? this is not a serious question as know it 'depends'..!!

Oh Thank you....yes my bus is very friendly and when I first moved here and knew no one it was what made me decide to stay and not return to Horsham from whence I came!  Someone had to pull the leg of my jeans down this morning to cover my shoe as was blancing on my sock!

I leave to a chorus of 'go careful now' and hear mutterings of ''isn't she doing well!!

Alice, I am 23 weeks Monday on another site I frequent, they have a scale also a nurse you can talk with. She would say if course everyone varies but a 6 months you should notice big changes however it can take a year to be back to normal. My surgeon said 75 percent healed at 7 weeks. The tissue and tendons have to mesh first in healing, then the muscle strengthens all and tightens around your joint, I imagine like a vine wrapping around a fence, the stronger it gets the rest of the fence might fall but that spot stays forever til the vine dies.

Wow Rocketman, Scarey picture however, I GA and I remember nothing for 2 days, had xray and don't remember it day after surgery. Also, it affected me negatively for almost three months, vertigo, headaches, severe cotton mouth, urinary problems then my IBS kicked in and gerd, I am feeling better now but was rough for a minute......I did learn from the ENT specialist that you brain, eyes and legs work together so if your gate is off it can make you dizzy. Example he gave is if you are leaning forward your legs tell your eyes your eyes tell your brain that you are about to step when you don't, confusion and your head swirls, interesting..

Wow, what a reaction, and for 3 months - not nice at all.

We all react differently to different things.

I was able to listen to my own operation, but I have terrible  vertigo, show me a film with a scene in a tall building, and my toes literally curl up.

My chiropractor did the Epley Manuver got rid of the vertigo, you can do this at home yourself. If you have had vertigo a long time after it is gone and crystals are moved back into your ears it may take a month or more for your brain to readjust itself and you might feel lightheaded, which is what happened to me......I know, we all react differently but yet the same in some instances.

Joy you must if it is recommended. I wasn't going to until I was told you might not have it now but will need it sometime and better to have it before more damage is done..Mind you I would be wary myself of having another one!  I need to practice what i preach.
