Food Ideas

I'm still waiting to have my gallbladder taken out and I'm really

struggling  to eat.   I'm  living  on sweet potato  and  crisps and  even

that is causing me to feel badly bloated,  nauseous  and  have stomach

pain.   I'm  so hungry  but there are so many foods I can't eat.

What foods  are you managing to tolerate  while waiting for your operation or what  did you eat before your  operation  ?   Please tell

me it gets better  after the op !!

Thanks

Hi Linda, I was like this too. I had to remove so many food groups I lost so much weight I am skin and bone now. I lived on corn chips and chicken and rice. Digestive enzymes and ox bile helped me so much and now 10 weeks post op, I can eat anything again. I still take ox bile and enzymes and the only issues I get is a little loud gas with eggs and the next day after lamb, but no issues really. I am also back to high healthy fats and low carb.

I am gluten and dairy free anyway but have read these often cause issues pre and postop.

I am no longer bloated, reflux has gone and bowels are so much better smile

I had mine removed a few years ago and at first I was nervous about what to eat, but after a while I ate anything. Before the op I lived on dry cereal, vegetable soup, chicken, boiled potatoes, chicken stew (no fat added) even had to sit through an Xmas dinner whilst everyone else aged roast potatoes etc!! Good luck

      Hi

Glad you feel better and can eat normal again.      I've bought some  gluten free

cereal  flakes  ,  thanks for the idea.

I ate a low fat diet and avoided alcohol, all take away meals, chocolate and ice cream. It is quite hard to eat a normal amount of calories when eating like this and I lost a lot of weight. I even lost weight over Christmas!

Foods I found I could tolerate were baked and mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, rice, pasta,  chicken, lean roast beef, white fish,  vegetables, salad (with low fat dressing), fruit and fruit juices. Pears are supposed to be especially good for gallbladder sufferers as is coffee- don’t know why. I was told no crisps and no baked goods except for wholemeal bread. I bought 0% fat yogurt,  0% fat frozen yogurt, low fat rice pudding and fruit set in jelly for desserts. Also switched to skimmed milk and Flora light, although I mainly used low fat mayo to moisten sandwiches instead and I used just marmalade or jam on toast for breakfast. I also ate bran flakes with dried fruit like apricots, prunes and raisins. I even found I could eat the occasional egg. I was conscious that restricting my diet might make me deficient in vitamins as I already have vitamin D deficiency so I tried to eat as varied a diet as possible. Over the course of several months when I was waiting for surgery, I actually became quite inventive so didn’t get bored. Strangely pineapple in any form upset me, but everyone is different in what they can tolerate whilst waiting for surgery. After surgery, it’s wise to introduce foods gradually.

Hi,   I don't eat red meat and  can't tolerate  salad or fruit   due  to my  IBS.

I  don't fancy  much  at all,   keep feeling  really queesy.   I  can't  stand  mayo or yogurt.

No veg except  the  occasional  spoonful  of carrots.    I've lost quite a bit of weight too. I  will be glad  when  it's  all  behind me   and  I  can  eat  normally  again.

    Hi Linda,

I wish I had a magic solution for you but truthfully, before I had my GB removed it was a lottery whenever I ate. Something OK on Monday would make me ill Tuesday. White bread and porridge were definite ones to avoid.

Basically I survived on anything low fat/fat free and lots of rice. Very boring but you survive! Small meals were also better than larger ones.

Now I can eat anything. If I have too much fat then I do suffer a little but nothing like the original problem.
