My doctor is reluctant to put my dose of Pred up from 9mg to 10 mg  so want me to take a split dose, as the pain wears off during the day , l aim to take the first dose after my breakfast in the morning and not sure what time to take my second dose. Doctor said that if I am still getting some pain after a few days to go up to 10mg. Thank you

I have been on split dose for 4-yrs. now been at 10mg. for about 7-8 months, but just dropped to 9.5 mg., although think I'm having negative side effects. I take 5mg. early a.m. 6:00a.m. & 2nd dose 4m5mg. about 5:00p.m. I have never felt quick relief after taking my prednisone, like one does with aspirin, tylenol, motrin, etc., Always thought prednisone was a longer more half life type drug, & have to keep in your system type drug ?

      Sorry I meant 4.5mg in p.m. about 5:00.

The plasma half life of pred is about 2-4 hours. The longer halflife steroids are dexamethasone and co.

Should have added that, although the plasma halflife is under 4 hours, the duration of EFFECT of pred is from 12 to 36 hours, depending on the person, i.e. the effect lasts far longer than the pred is present in the body.

Hi there, it normally takes about 3/4 hours for the Pred to work on me. Hopefully the split dose will keep me pain free all the time. 😀

EileenH, that explains why the small dose at bedtime helps me feel better in the morning, before my larger dose.

      Thanks again, ☺️
