Fracture numerous head

I fractured the humoros head of my left shoulder on Christmas Eve as a result of a fall during ice-skating. It has been three weeks and my left arm is immobilized in a sling. I return in two weeks to the orthopedic physician who will then x-ray the shoulder again to be certain it is healing well. There was no displacement. I live in the US & wondered how long I will have PT. I'm also wondering when I will be able to use the left arm to hold a hair dryer so I can do my hair. I'm 57 years old & am so hurt when people say I was probably too old to be ice skating. Any replies on healing are appreciated. I'm really frustrated with slow process of healing.

I too fractured proximal humerus bone in right shoulder and have damaged biceps, elbow and rorator cuff. Seeing a specialist Consultant today to get full diagnosis, prognosis and recovery plan. Been in a sling for over two weeks immobilising my arm but shoulder is very painful and unstable.

Hi Tommy any help or hints would be much appreciated. I too am in severe pain and all they give you is a sling

Can't cope with the pain for 6 months.

      Thanks

I took plenty of co-codamol and ibuprofen alternately to reduce the severe pain. V-pillow is great to help you get comfier sleeping. NHS appointment wait was over 2 months so asked GP to refer me to private hospital where I have had good Consultations and physio. Mobility is slow and painful but improves with light exercise and time. Get help washing, cooking and dressing in easy to wear clothes. Hope your pain is starting to reduce and you are a bit more comfortable as took me a few weeks for acute pain to die down!

I fell down the stairs and dislocated my left shoulder and fractured my humerous. They put shoulder back in under GA and have given me a foam sling for the fracture. I have no follow up appointment and am still in alot of pain. I've stopped using the sling as I find it easier without it but many people are telling me that I need to use it. Only now I can't seem to get it in the right position. Apparently the pain will be here for 6 months at least. It's killing me now and can't go on for said amount of time. Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Thanks

Multi fractured my shoulder last year February and still get pain my  shoulder down in the tendons through to my wrist.. I had a sponge sling then placed into a full proper fabric sponge from the 5 months I was off. It takes time - best to keep it in the sling as once dislocated it can repeativlt come out, the shoulder is only keep in the socket with the tendons and nerves  so again best to keep it  satable till it it is healed as such.  I was taking strong co-codamol, I tried a Tramamol for about a day but totally spaced me out so gave up.. Buy a V cushion or pillow for night time to rest yr arm on, helps immensley and will become yr best friend for comfort lol lol..  you should be seeing the fracture clinic or doctor at least every 4 weeks for guidance and checking up on - if not make sure you book a appointment to see them.. best luck xxxx

Hi mollymoos, I'm new to this site and I'm not sure how to start my own thread on this subject so I hope you don't mind I've replied to you 🙋

Hello I have recently (7th March 2017) broken my shoulder right arm. I believe it's the humerus head I know it's in 3 parts as I recall from the xray. I fell over crossing the road and also broke my radial (elbow) but it's nothing like the shoulder in pain and thr effect it has on abilities to carry out normal activities.on the 13th February I gave birth so I am putting my unfortunate breaks down to being post natal 😕. I just wondered of any recent stories about recovery, driving and resuming normal everyday activities. I have not heard many positives about physio in stories I've read so far. Look forward to any responses ?

Hello Sarah.. First thing - stay postive, every day is another day closer to being healed smile...  are they doing surgery or letting it heal naturally?.. I was healing naturally which they remarked they were impressed at the quickness of it. I did do Pshyio but sometimes prefered to set my own own goals in moving my arm. If you are given painkillers, please please take them(if you are feeding - check with doctors)  everyone is different and heals at their own rate. - to do your own thread with posts just go to the section "shoulder problems" (see the very top of page )click, then click again on new topic in that section...and away you go.. easy peasy..

the people on this site  are amazing and very helpful and will always be here for a venting or just to chat to if you feel down..  I know I always mention about the wonderful V Cushions.. but if you dont have one, lol buy one .. marvellous things and saved my sanity many times.. good luck my friend - and congrates on the new baby xx smile

Thank you for getting back to me ano positivity is infectious so you and reading through stories of people substations similar injuries are very helpful. Since the fall I've been on regular paracetamol and ibrupfen so hadon't to stop breast feeding. Pain has been manageable to date but now assorted physio is starting I fear active physio will require a stronger something due to the nighttime aches worsening. I've ordered a heat/freeze bag to hopefully help. In the first week they were going to do surgery but specialists called me back in to xray 2 weeks after and said healing had started and they believe my breaks would heal naturally with help from physio I'd get full use back. I'm trying to rest my arms as much as possible but with baby it's hard as you can imagine. Need to invest in a v cushion. Setting myself small goals too like everyone wanting to get better I miss driving so much 😀

Good to hear you are coping.. it can be hard, but family and friends you will get there.. one step at a time.. if you have a shower try using a large scarf to hold your arm  for support - dosent matter if it get wet and saves on the sling get soacked each time.. I lived in pjs all the time and it is amazing what you can do with one arm/hand.. lol.. adaption is the key and yes you will get frustrated and tears will fall but it is human nature so dont feel alone..   sleep when baby sleep and who gives a.... what the house looks like.. your health is primary as with babys.. xxx

😀 good advice thank you. Can I ask how long ago you accident was and how long recovery was for you? Im now 3 weeks in so still very new. My specialist said he estimated I would be driving week 6 ish and return to work after 3 months. The physio said I could go short periods without sling so I'm happy with that. I've been doing assisted physio x3 times a day for a week.

      Thank you 😀

took me 5 mths before I could go back to work - still have pain and discomfort in forearm  - this I think is due to tendons and nerves - which I am seeing  someone for at end of week.  dont rush if you feel you are not ready - hospitals base treatment on a "normal average" person.. we are all different in healing and any advice should be taken as guidlines only.  I am still cautious with any lifting of items - It can pull or twinge with a simple turn of the wrist - but I carry on regardless.. I only took my sling off when resting ie.. laying on couch.. I always slept init as I found it supported my shoulder and arm.. yep.. it did become a bit of a comfort blanket for me, lets face it.. its a scary thing to happen and vow anyone to  say different.. lol lol ..

Oh yes I'm very protective of my arm now and I have a five year old who is all over me ... scary! Do you drive? I know some people jump straight back in the car but I'm advised when sling is off which I think I will adhere to. No you are right all stories are different depending on person at least you are almost there giving hope and positivity as at times it feels like a forever thing xxx

hey Sarah... No.. I dont drive, but have managed ok in the last year - my babies are grown up  but were  helpful in looking after me.. you lose all dignity when your children have to scrub you down in the shower hahahah and tell you off when you try to do things yourself but that is life..  you will build your confidence up in no time..  and with your little helper looking after  mummy  and  sibling.. turn it into a game... you'll be fine..  have you been back to hospital yet.

I initially went to an emergency minor injury unit on the first day and was seen within two days at the hospital and then again last week. The specialist just said he would refer me to physio I think he will then see me again at 6 weeks for another xray. Physio is planned for the 6th april who will see me until the end of my treatment but i was sent home with some assited physio exercises to do two weeks after my break so im happy that im trying to keep moving. I live in plymouth, Devon where everything's a bit laxydaisic but having said that I have read many stories where people are left for weeks before follow ups and to start physio mainly in amErica I think.

I live in bedford, was seen by the main consultant, he was brilliant. I saw him every month for the fractures but nothing said about the tendons etc which is causing me problems , esp at night time - sometimes I have physically lift my arm over when I turn over and still have problems when lifting stuff like the kettle and pans of food. I say everyone that any questions or problems  - go back to the hospital for further investigations. we know our own bodies and know when something is not right...

Oh no that must be disappointing. I guess it's a waiting game to know if any tendons have been damaged. Although I'm strong in my lower arm of the shoulder break my very weak in my elbow break obviously I'm hoping it just fracture related. Let me know how you get on at your appointment to I hope it goes well for you
