Frenuloplasty - Opinions from those who've had one

I went to my GP for a vasectomy referral. We have 2 kids and we're done.

He suggested that while I was there I get everything checked out down below. During the examination he said he was concerned about he tightness of my frenulum. Had it caused me any issues throughout my life? When I told him it hadn't he seemed surprised, and referred me to the urologist for further investigation.

That appointment was today. Another examination, more questions about had it ever caused me issues etc. etc. More surprise that it never had. She told me she believed it was too tight, and even though it's never caused me any issues, it was bound to at some point in my life and she was recommending a corrective procedure called a frenuloplasty. From the literature she gave me it seems they will cut the frenulum and stitch it back horizontally, thus relieving this tension that they're so concerned about.

She suggested it could lead to some desensitizing, but it was much more preferable in that regard to a full circumcision.

My question is how much desensitizing are we talking about? I don't want to go down this route if I'm going to be losing some pleasure from sex. Although this seems to have run away from me, without anyone taking my opinion on my penis, then it is still apparently my choice, but they highly recommend having it done.

Anyone here had it done? Any before and after thoughts. Is it worthwhile in my case as a "pre-emptive strike"? The urologist seemed convinced that at some point the frenulum will snap. She said this would be very painful and limit the options to correct it after the event so better to get ahead of it, and I was lucky my GP had spotted it.

I think your doctors are right and also think it's good they are offering a minor procedure rather than full circumcision which I would never recommend. I haven't had this myself but I had a psychotherapy client who did. He had bled from intercourse and he was very pleased with the final results and went on to have 2 lovely children. Clearly yours is a in a less serious condition, but he certainly reported no sensitivity issues, so I suggest you go ahead.

I find this interesting. I have worked as a urologist for 5 years and have never heard of a specialist advising a patient to have a frenuloplasty when the patient has had no complaints of a tight frenulum or painful erections/intercourse/masturbation.

It may well be that she is right and that it is necessary to fend off a torn frenulum in the future, but I would suggest there is no harm in getting a second opinion. It is also correct to say that if a tear was bad, then the most likely course of action would be removal of the frenulum (or a high and tight circumcision), rather than a simple modification.

You should think very carefully before electing for surgery to your penis. A lot of doctors/surgeons are very "cut-happy" and keen to recommend circumcisions and frenluolplasty when non-surgical options haven't yet been explored.

Whilst, in my professional experience, I've never had any complaints about desensitisation from a frenuloplasty (circumcision is a whole different issue) there are no guarantees. Your frenulum is connected to the most sensitive parts of your penis and everybody is different.

Thank you Gem. I think I will definitely go back to my GP and see if I can get referred to another urologist just for peace of minds

Hi Phil, did read that when you have a semi and in the bath you can pull your foreskin back and slowly stretch it, and it will slowly give, I would have thought you can do it under the shower after a warm up, why you hold it under the warn water use the fire stick method, then do some stretching, but again slowly.

    Just remember slowly, slowly. OK

Hi! Are you perhaps living in a part of the world where the majority is cut? Coming from a country where 98% of the male population is uncut. I find your doctors opinion strange and irrational. I know several with a short frenulum without it creating problems. It obviously may break, but there's a lot of things which may go wrong with our body. We may break our arms and legs too at some point, but we don't do much about it before the day it happens... If you have been able to bring two kids to this world and been regularly sexual active and not noticing any problems with your penis, then I find it rediculas to do anything about it, but that's just my personal opinion.

Living in the UK, so I don't think the circumcision rate is anywhere near that high!

I reckon an NHS urologist would rarely recommend a procedure that wasn't necessary. They have plenty to get on with and don't gain financially from doing extra procedures. I wouldn't have any fear of loss of sensitivity as long as frenuplasty was done and not full circumcision. As far as I am aware, the skin tissue is rearranged rather than removed.

Just remember there are 20.000 nerve ending in your frenulum.

Loss that and you really do lose all your sensitivity.

I agree the frenulum area of the underside of the penis is extremely important. My understanding is that with frenuplasty the frenulum is not removed but can be preserved if done well. I don't dispute what you say about the number of nerve endings, but isn't it an exaggeration to say that all sensitivity would be lost?

Does anyone else find this crazy? You've been having sex for many years without any problems but they want to cut your penis.

They are trying to treat a problem that you don't have. Run from them.

I had a frenuloplasty 3 years ago, it was a mistake. I have pain during and after sex, it is much worse now than it was before the surgery.

There are more ways to perform frenuloplasty. In your case, it was not performed correctly. I will email you a link to a site with description and image information. Loss of sensitivity need not occur and neither need pain afterwards. It has to be done superficially and a GP can also do it.

im of the mind set, if its not broke dont fix it. you have no issues with it, you have been able to preform at least two times. I'm sure if you were in pain you would not have gone for a second round. that being said....when you were asked if it hurt and you answer was no, that's when the conversation should have stopped and zero referrals.

Don't be force into anything. When you said no. That is it. There just looking for a quick buck.

I know that saying to. If you are not having a problem Leave it alone.
