Fundoplication failure

I had a lap' Nissen fundoplication about 10 years ago. The operation changed my life. For the first time in 25 years I could eat and drink what and when I wanted.
About a year ago my original symptoms began to reappear and have got progressively worse and I I am now on 40mg omeprazole a day. I am seeing a consultant in whom I have little faith and is very young.
I am trying to find out about a "redo". Most of the information and data about redos is on american websites.
Has anyone had a fundoplication which has failed?
Has anyone had a redo?
Does anyone know of a consultant who specialises in fundoplication redos?
Thanks, Simon.

I had my first Nissan fundoplication at the age of 40 years old after dealing with a hiatal hernia and reflux n pre cancer cells in esphogus (Barrett's syndrome) from the time I was 17 years old by the time I was 40 I was on at least seven different stomach medications at once and vomiting every day hence my first Nissan fundoplication into 2005. After that surgery I felt fantastic I could eat go number one or number two lost the weight I had gained and was skinny as I have been all my life but that only lasted eight years and into 2013 i had to have a redo as the Nissan came undone and I was vomiting n reflux n stomache distention. The second Nissan was done laparoscopically with the same five incisions that were made with the first which are barely noticeable but the surgeon told me that I had not much stomach to wrap so it would be tight and it was I spent three years barely eating gaining weight had to be catheterized for two months And could barely go number two so in January 2017 we discovered my hiatal hernia had come back and reflux as I was choking on vitamins and food we found out the hiatle hernia was back and the slip to Nissan retreating into my esophagus and choking me to death I had to have third Nissan but this time I had to have a thoracotomy in which they removed a rib cut my rib muscle in half to repair a hiatal hernia and the Nissan it's been five months and I'm still in severe rib pain but started vomiting a week ago and severe reflux And stomach distention I am being sent for more tests this coming Thursday, July 6, 2017 for an upper G.I. and barium test thing I don't have a good feeling as after having three I know my body and I'm terrified

I'm sickened that I just had 3rd surgery in Jan the 2nd redo n now after 5 months n them having to do a thoracotomy this time which is still incredibly painful that my symptoms are all back including left pain where hiatle hernia is n now what? After Thursday if results are bad I will need 4th surgery. Wtf? I'm thinking of suing. As my choices were die from cancer that was forming in my eshogus or have the first surgery. I had no idea I would ever need the second or third n now maybe 4th. I'm praying yet terrified. It's horrible being trapped in a body falling apart. I also have 10 herniated disks in neck n lumbar w stenosis lordosis etc etc n back n neck are too severe to be operated on n my left arm had to have surgery in 2011 as wrist was bone on bone with ulnar but it didn't go well n I'm left handed yet still have rods n plates n screws one of which is wondering somewhere in my arm n pain pain pain everywhere. I've tried every procedure medicine pT etc etc n nothing works n now my stomache may have come undone. It's horrible.

Hi Simon my name is Leslie I am 59 years and I live near Albany New York and one year ago in August of 2016 I had the Nissen fundoplication warp for gerds I was doing real well for the first 6 or 7 months I was off my meds I was eating and drinking anything I want but this past April my symptoms returns since the first operation I could not burp or vomit and when I did need to get rid of gas it came from my backend and I been having real bad belly after I eat and the bloating after I eat is terrible I don't feel good half the time I lost some weight which I don't mind but it's not the right way to lose weight as we all know so this past April I made and an oppointment with another doctor who dose fundoplication surgery and after all the tests he put me through he told that the doctor who did my fundoplication warp surgery last year my new doctor who I like very much said he warp me way way to tight that what was causing my symptoms to return worse than before my first fundoplication surgery so on October 11 2017 my new doctor is going to do a redo fundoplication surgery on me so let me ask you Simon did you have your redo surgery how did the surgery went and now how are you feeling after the surgery can you eat and drink anything you want for I would like to know that's all so take care and I hope I hear from you or anybody else who had a redo fundoplication surgery Thanks Leslie

Hi Leslie, I had a redo approx 4 weeks ago. Post surgery I am still vomiting, can barely eat & am not gaining any weight. Had my first Nissen fundoplication in June 2017 but the wrap was far too tight. I weighed 8 stone pre surgery & currently weigh 6st 10lbs. I burp & vomit daily!
Has the surgeon said that the operation will cure your symptoms? I hope & pray that you have a much better outcome than me.

Hi Leslie my name is Jenny I had my first Nissan fundoplication in Long Island New York in 2005 and then hiatal hernia they fixed as I had Barrett's esophagus and which is pre-cancer. It lasted eight years I went back to my normal weight I could eat the gas was coming out the back and which I t supposed to i'm not burping constantly and I was unable to vomit. I felt great after the eight years it came undone and into 2013 I had to have a redo and he did it too tight because I didn't have much stomach left to do the full Nissan so I spent three years miserable and gained weight but I wasn't able to eat and my body was just storing fat and this past January I had to have another redo and this time they did a thoracotomy took a rib out n cut my rib muscle in a half and went in to the esophagus that way and built a Nissan wrap from my intestines and in a couple months ago I started vomiting n burping n my stomach was distended I went and had so many test done they were all bad like the barium test sat in my Esphogus for over five minutes the test for motility is completely weak now the surgery for the hiatal hernia and Nissan is still intact but now my esophagus has become so weak from me having reflux since I was 17 and all the surgeries and they may need to remove my esophagus and build me one from my colon they've done 2 endoscopies with dilation The first one lasted a week and a half and the second one I just had a week ago and I'm starting to burp again I'm terrified now they will have to remove my esophagus sorry for the bad news good luck

Hi Jenny This is Leslie I am so very sorry all that you been through I do hope you get he help you so badly need and soon I had my first nissen fundoplication surgery of August of last year for I really had greds bad I also had a hernia repair at the same time and spent five days in the hospital I was doing great for about seven months I was off my reflux meds I go my energy back and I could eat and drink anything that i want to then very slowly some of my old symptoms and from the middle of may to the middle of June of this year I lost 26 pounds and like you I could not. burp or vomit and when I did need to get rid of gas it came from my back end which was very unpleasant at and when I needed to vomit it came from the back of my throat and Thur my nose which was unpleasant as well so in July of this year I went to see my ENT doctor I told him my symptoms and he said there was nothing that he could do really he said that I should go back to the doctor that did the surgery I said to him try to get a oppointment his office help said he was out of the office and they don't know when he will be back or he is very book up some doctor right so my ENT doctor sent me to other doctor that dose nissen fundoplication surgery and after he did his tests and when he got the reports back it showed that he did warp way way to tight on me and it also gave me a new hernia as well so my new doctor who work out of Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany New York for I lived in East Berne New York it is a small town and about 25 miles from Albany Medical Center so on 10-11-2017 my doctor is going to do redo nissen fundoplication surgery first he is going to undo the warp fix my hernia clean up old scar tissues put in a mesh and a feeding tube which he is going to remove three days after surgery and I be in the hospital for one week and he is going to make me a new warp as well but I still fill up with gas and I have stomach as well but my new doctor is kind caring and takes the time to really listen to his patients so I know I going to do right by him and this is last redo surgery he will do on me for a very very long time so Jenny it was wonderful to talk to you can we stay in touch for I would like to know how are you doing and I can tell you how I am doing as well so take care Jenny and let's talk soon very truly your Leslie

WOW. Your original surgeon should have seen you right away but the surgeon that did my second and third Nissan totally blew me off to as he did the second too tight and the third he wanted nothing to do with me so I understand what ur going thru but I may sue him but the thoracotomy surgeon is someone who sent me for a barium test and then to Gastro doc then did the endoscopy with dilation in the hospital and that motility test where they stick a tube up your nose and you swallow it into your stomach was done by a different Gastro doc and that's when they found out I had a weak Esphogus and then he did a CT with contrast to see if the surgery was still in place which it is the histle hernia is OK and the wrap is OK it's just my esophagus. I'm shocked though they're not sending you for a barium test to see how tight the wrap is and to try a dilation first and they're just jumping right in and doing surgery I would ask them about at least a barium test and an endoscopy with dilation and A feeding tube is really extreme and you don't want that I don't know what is wrong with doctors these days but my friend who goes by Beulah lives in the UK and it's a lot different there but we live in New York and I think they're rushing the surgery if you're vomiting a lot honestly that's what happened to me in January and I was choking on pills and food and that's when they admitted me and they ran all those tests in the hospital unlike last month I had to run from one test the barium to another doctor and then the hospital for endoscopy and then another doctor for motility and then the hospital for the surgeons to do another dilation and possibly put Sean's into my sphincter to keep it open but they didn't but you need some tests before they just open you up again you did not want to have a thoracotomy so please ask them Are you on Facebook we can friend each other there and then give out our personal info and talk and text I'm under Jenny McCarthy Santelli so find me and friend me and is your real name Leslie then I'll know it's you and I'll accept friend request and I'll give you my cell number etc. and we can talk that would be great Also never let them put mess and you know there are so many losses against match right now my doctor is rebuilt with my intestines on the third one and it's staying it's like I said in my esophagus is not working properly anymore but doing a feeding tube and mash could be devastating to you when they did the barium test on me a month ago the barium one sip sat in my esophagus for five minutes before it entered my stomach so they thought the wrap was too tight originally but it was the fact my sphincter muscle is so weak I see my story I think surgeon tomorrow and he may inject Botox since I am burping again and the dilation is feeling like it's not working again so Botox will do the trick as there's no way I'm gonna let them remove my eshogus. So FB friend me. Ok

Hi Beaula and everyone well here it is the day before my Nissan redo fundoplication surgery and tomorrow is my surgery you can say I am a little bit scared and frightened but I have a good surgeon and I know everything will turn out for the better why I am having a redo Nissan fundoplication surgery is because last year I had my first Nissan fundoplication surgery for I had greds really bad I felt great for the seven to eight months after my surgery I was off of my anti reflux meds eating and drinking anything I like then in July I was starting to have some of my old symptoms return I lost 18 pounds in about a month time I did not want to look at food and I was forcing myself to eat something which is not good either so I did not know what to do so I made an oppointment with my ENT doctor to see if he could help me but he said there was not much that he could do he told me to make an oppointment with the surgeon that did my fundoplication surgery I said to him I try but his office help said he is out of the office and they don't when he be in or he is all book up for a very long time so my ENT doctor made me an oppointment with a new chest surgeon that dose fundoplication surgery by the name of Doctor Walter Scott and after he sent me for the usual tests to see want was the matter and when he got the reports back is showed that the doctor who did my fundoplication surgery on me last year well he did the warp way way too tight and it had slip in in a bad position and give me a new hernia as well so tomorrow surgery what he is going to do is to take down the warp fix my new hernia remove old scar tissues put a feeding tube which he is going to remove three days after surgery make a new warp and put in a medical mesh and I will be spending five to seven days in the hospital than slowly working my way up to a normal diet once again like I said in the beginning of this text yes I am a little bit scared and frighten who would be any type of surgery is a scary thing but I get along great with my new doctor he is kind caring and really try his best to do the right thing for his patients and he has a wonderful bedside manor as well so I know I be all right under his care so with that thanks everyone for taking the time to read my text i and I will keep everyone posted on how I am coming along after my surgery so take care everyone and I hope you all find the help you are looking for as well for your problems talk to you all soon truly yours Leslie??

Hi Leslie,
I hope that the surgery goes well & that you make a full recovery very soon. I had my Nissen partially reversed approx 6 weeks ago & have been vomiting everyday since my initial surgery in June 2017. I really feel for you & can completely understand & appreciate the fact that you feel a little apprehensive however, it sounds like you have a good surgeon who you trust & that in itself is so very important when undergoing surgery of any kind.
Keep us posted & make sure that you retain your positive frame of mind. Wishing you all the very best for tomorrow. Night, night
