Gabapentin Withdrawal IMPORTANT

I spent 4 days in intensive care following a spinal operation. This was found to be the result of the sudden complete withdraawal of Gabapentin.

For 3 whole days I was, to quote my surgeon, 'on another planet.' The only drug, of the many I was taking for pain, the only one that could not been given in an alternative form was Gabapentin. Fortunately, on the 3rd day there happened to be a charge nurse on duty who had seen a [b]previous case similar to mine, also resulting from withdrawal of Gabapentin.

My husband insisted that some way was found of administrating the drug. (I myself was una\\ware of any of this until later). There were objections from the staff since I would need sedating and was unable to consent! My husband over-rode them - thank goodness - and said he would take full responsibility and 'just do it.'

Some time after he left they did sedate me and administer the Gabapoentin. Then, as now, I had been taking 900mg 3 times daily for nerve pain, so I had obviously fallen off a cliff in terms of amount taken.

The following morning I woke up back to normal and asked for a cup of tea. When my husband arrived I saw him wipe tears from his eyes. If not back from the dead I WAS back from a living nightmare.

WHAT CONCERNS ME MOST IS THAT THIS WAS DISMISSED BY THE MANUFACTURERS WHEN ONE OF MY CONSULTANTS MENTIONED IT. YET IT IS A TERRIBLE REACTION, ALBEIT NO DOUBT EXTREMELY RARE. IT SHOULD BE MAD E KNOWN:!:

Thank you for submitting.  I myself am on Gabapentin same amount per day for nerve pain  I was also on dehydrocodiene/paracetamol.....dehydrocodiene being an opiate (narcortic) and although I weaned off them firstly and am now totally clean of them -  I went through a week of sheer hell withdrawing.  A doctor on you tube said it's the same as withdrawing from herione.   The Gabapentin is said to help with the withdrawals but now I want to come of these also I am so glad I read your post. Many many thanks.

I am really scared, don't know what to do.

Get in a cab and go to your nearest hospital emergency department and report your symptoms. Tell them about the gabapentin.

Ok so I'm really torn here. I took a 5 day prednisone taper pack and I experienced horrible anxiety, depression, insomnia, loss of appetite, had the shakes, excessive sweating. I have not been myself at all and I was going crazy. It's been the worst experience of my life. I started feeling the side effects of the prednisone on the 17th and my 5th day that I ended the taper was the 19th. Up to last night, I was still feeling the side effects even though they got a little better.

A friend of mine gave me about 10 of his 300mg gabapentins and said they would help me sleep but he doesn't really take them because he likes to take his xanax. After looking it up online it sounded like a good idea because it said it could help with anxiety and stuff too.

I took one this morning and I started to feel really normal and happy. I was like a whole new person. I didn't know whether it was the gabapentin or if I really felt that much better. About 4 hours later I emptied half of a capsule out and took that too. It was my first time with this so I didn't wanna mess myself up for work. I felt that way for hours and hours. Now I'm started to feel a little drowsy and I don't think it's the feeling I was having before but hoping it's just sleepiness.

I can't believe how much better it made me feel but now reading this I'm thinking it might not be a good idea because this friend can alway give me more but now I'm scared I'm gonna end up with the same problem after stopping the gabapentin. I don't have health insurance so talking to a doctor is kinda out of the question. I just don't have the money for it. If I stick to just 2 x 300mg per day for like a week until the other side effects of the prednisone wear off should I be able to avoid wd symptoms?

I'm also a Gaba patient. I'd like to back away slowwwwwly. I've experienced severe withdrawl symptoms by cutting back too soon, too much. Has anyone had experience with reducing and getting your own body's natural Substance P levels back (neurotransmitter) and reduced pain levels. Hope I'm asking this correctly. Please respond. I've had a terrible health record with pain/fascia issues/ muscle spasms in the last 4 years. I was given the Gaba to begin with after I suffered a stroke.

I never even bothered to check out all the side effects first?

We place a great deal of faith in Doctors/Specialists in pain Management.

Now on 600mg x 2 daily. Gabapentin sold as Neurontin was doubled by my Professor in one hit. Following a double fasciotomy in my lower leg. This was to relieve the high pressure caused by swelling after fractures in both tibia

and fibula. I am totally zonked out all the time from side effects. AWFUL.

Now on my own cut back to half and waiting to see what happens.

Reading all the stories here is SCARY.

    Any advice Please.

So May of 2016 I found parts of my heel and ankle started going numb figured it was from a 2009 accident with neck/head/spine injuries and which I haven't been treated for with no meds or treatment since 2013 and improvement is almost 100% except minor pain and discomfort from some days where I'd over do my self throughout the day. May 2016 finding out I could stick sharp pointed objects into heel puncture skin and draw blood with no feeling or reactions except for a blood bath on paper towels (few people didn't believe me). After seeing foot and ankle specialist a few neurologist they started me on 150mg then up 300mg amd Now 600mg 3 times a day. Here's the kicker I just take 1 600mg when I feel my nerves are acting up in my leg and heel/foot and it helps. The most taken in a week is 3 maybe 4 600mg pills when I feel needed.

** point of my reply** just to make all aware my doctors told me this med is non-habit forming and there's no W/D symptoms also told side effects aonly last a few days till body becomes adapted to the med. I go days in between taking this med. so I'm pretty sure I'm good or I'd be writing about a lot of different questions on WD symptoms.

Most of all Is do homework in all meds and don't be so quick that all meds (pain/nerve/anti depressants) are better then some normal everyday health checks done at home. I'm on a healthy food diet lost 35 pounds on my own in 6months with minor workout within my restrictions and cut out nasty foods and drinks. Also run the tracks at parks just as much as I can handle or even

Walking. it was all done by me and my mind overpowering the doctors RX PADS and be careful

    On all meds.

    Not sure?

Ask or reach out there's always

Someone to help or be helped!!

And FYIStill to this day I am able to poke pointed objects through heel etc. nails thumbtack saftypins (all disenfected) and have won a few bets by proving.

Good luck good health good wealth to all.

That is what happened to me! I wasnt sure, but now I know. I only need to get my record of medications given and not given. I was supposed to be in the hospital for one night. I was in eight nights, while they tried to figure out why my mind was blown. I've had six surgeries and the delusion never happened before. Thank you.

I have been on Gabapentin for a while now...started lower but currently taking 600mg 3xper day=1800 per day. I have been on it for a total of almost 4 years now. Last MRI every single disc except on was herniated, but I have thorasic nerve damage due to surgeries and an accident I had several years ago in which a refrigerater fell on me.

I have noticed lately that my eye sight is really getting bad as well as my short term memory...I also worry about the fact that...am I going to have to take this for the rest of my life? and if so, it seems like I have had to increase about every year. It makes it very hard to take weight off which makes my nerve damage worse...as a woman I of course have to wear a bra and all I can say that is that it is pure torture every second that I am wearing one. Probably was very stupid of me, but I have tried in the past to lower my dose and I just end up in so much pain that I am litterally about to lose it. Anxiety through the roof and the pain in so intense....I am glad I found this tread but just worried that I will never be able to come off this medication. Scares me...

That happened to me! I dont understand what you mean about it couldnt be administered in another form, and why would you need to be sedated? I figured that they just forgot to give it to me!

I have taken a different approach, and so far not one withdrawal symptom. I increase TIME between dosages rather than decreasing dosage. I started at 400mg twice a day for 8 months. That is 1 every 12 hours. Every 7 days, I increased time between dosage by 2 additional hours. I am now taking 1 every 18 hours. Once I hit 24 hours I will go as long as I can past 24 hours until having stymptoms, and continue until there are none. This is how I got off of pain meds. If I have problems after 24 hours, I will ask dr for lower dosage to continue weaning, but I dont think that will be necessary.

Wanda, Are you able to reinstate and taper down the dosage very slowly over a period of months?
    • Posted

shes got the exact same symptoms i had 5 days no sleep tapering wont work this is way more serious i tried tapering once i tapered i just lied awake all night shes going to have to do what the emergency room doctor told me to do and that definately works

I only say that because I went off cold turkey once and didn't sleep for 60 hours and then minimal after that.  I reinstated later (too much later actually, -- 6 weeks) and then tapered off over a matter of years.  But the Ashton manual suggests 10% cuts every 3 weeks or more (I made cuts over several months) and then 5% cuts when you get down to the last 10-20%.  My problem is after getting off, i tried to get back on recently to deal with some issues I thought it could help and had a reverse reaction and now had to get off quickly and can't reinstate, so now I'm having a lot of problems.  I'm just saying that is the best solution for some people, but some can't do that because of other issues.

well i explain in the video that once you take your last gabapentin pill you will be off the gabapentin for two weeks as you continue to taper off the ativan and the reason why you continue to take ativan but tapering off ativan is because after you take your last gabapentin pill you will continue to go through withdrawals from no longer taking gabapentin for two weeks but the continueing to take the ativan helps you sleep during the two weeks of gabapentin withdrawals but you got to taper off the ativan two weeks after stopping the gabapentin before you start a new addiction to ativan
