Gallbladder is gone so where is this pain from?

HI

Had the dreaded gallbladder removed last June after only 7 months of pain (so I'm pretty lucky).

Everything went well, home the same day - took a good 4 weeks to feel totally better after the op but eating was ok and I don't seem to be affected by bowel issues like some people.

Only problem is I have dull ache in exactly the same place I used to get the gallbladder pain. It's not intense pain but it's in the front RUQ under my ribs and moves round the side and to my back.

It doesn't seem to appear after anything in particular and most of the time it's there constantly. Suppose it's more of an annoyance than anything else because I'm always aware of this ache. I'm quite reluctant to go to my GP because after spending about 7 months constantly in the surgery last year updating painkillers and nausea pills I don't want them to think I'm addicted to medical attention.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar or if it's just a by-product of surgery that I'll have to get on with?

Thanks

    happyalien,

Hi, I am waiting for my surgeon to tell me if the pain I am suffering is to do with my gall bladder, I want to ask him if he will either do a MRI scan or perhaps just an X-Ray, although he said that they normally do a X-Ray on the day of the operation.

Did you ever have the pain felt at the back right shoulder blade area only, especially in the later days prior to your op?

it is normal. Go on a fat free diet and you will be fine once you remove it out. No fats or you will be in pain. It is that simple. eat junk and you will be in pain. drink 6 to 8 cups of water daily. I have been dealing with it over 10 years and when I eat bad, I am in pain.

Sal, could you share your regular non-fat diet, if not too much to ask? I'm going through the same thing everyone here seems to be experiencing so knowing what to eat will help me at least avoid potential future outbrakes of this awful pain.

      Thanks!

My doctor told me once I removed my GB out I can eat whatever I want without pain ! That's obviously lie

It's most likely gas pain.... I get it quite often now that I don't have a gallbladder anymore. Last time it was so bad I was drenched in sweat and could barely breath. Took some gas-x and it was fine!

Gas pains can be so severe that people think they're having a heart attack.

Without your gallbladder, the bile has no place to be stored anymore so it changes your entire digestive track.

I think I can help you with the back pain!  I had my gallbladder removed (cholecystectomy) two years ago and still have pain after eating foods high in cholesterol and hydrogenated fats and other processed foods.  I try to only eat whole foods but sometimes I mess up.  When I get my "phantom gallbladder pain" I can get rid of it almost instantly by lying on my stomach on the floor and placing a tennis ball below my right breast (not ON the breast but BELOW it).  It will feel like it's on a rib.  I gently place some of my body weight on the ball and rib and roll my body around so that the tennis ball massages the crampy area.  I came up with this on my own and I know it sounds weird but it works for me instantly!  My pain refers to the back and shoulder blade but after I do this massage technique it goes away completely.  I also will turn over onto my back and place the tennis ball near my shoulder blade and spine and put a lot of my body weight on it and roll around so the tennis ball loosens up all those muscles.  This seems to help too, but not as much as massaging front rib area with the ball.  I hope you get this comment and get some instant relief!    Please copy and paste this to other people suffering.  NO doctor has ever been able to help me.  My surgeon was NOT helpful either after he removed my gallbladder and acted like I was imagining it.  Go get yourself a tennis ball.  Let me know if it works for you too.

That is definitely a lie, at least for me & several people who are not fortunate to recover quickly. Or have an underlying medical condition, lupus. My surgery was in October & now 5 months later I am not able to eat what I want without some problem, whether it be a quick sprint to the bathroom or holding stomach from pain of spasms or still unclear where or what the discomfort is exactly or what the medical diagnosis is and what is causing it. I have lost over 25 pounds & am 105. Difficult to eat because of the pain I get so sort of don't want to eat because of it but know I have too. Have been drinking a lot of protein smoothies from Jamba Juice. I say unless you are in excruciating pain after you have changed your diet I would not take my gallbladder out. I know if given an opportunity to do it again I probably would have waited for my pain to subside & stick to my diet a little more. I only ate cheese on occasion so I would have been willing to give that up for what I have now in a heartbeat. My whole way of living has changed because of it. No energy & not going out because of pain & discomfort are not good for your health either. Hope you figure out what to do if you need surgery or not & if you have surgery all goes well in your recovery. Some people do bounce back with no complications after their surgery & will hope that's you.

HAVE you been tested for sphincter of odi dysfunction or biliary dysconescia (sp?)

Sometimes the whole biliary system slows down and the sphincter muscle stops opening causing bile to back up

      Scarring can occur

I had my sphincter cut (the procedure cause pancrearititis -in fact every ERCP has cause it. But there is a potential for some relief- I had a diseased gallbladder for over 10 years-no stones so if. Rise I was crazy-right?! When they finally removed it -the gallbladder had adhered to my liver-the surgeon literally said it was the most diseased gallbladder he'd ever seen.

Do not accept "your fine", "it's in your head" etc. demand a diagnosis and find a doctor willing to work to a solution! My last hospitalization and ERCP resulted in he entire biliary system full of sludge and barely working and I was in so much pain I felt I was dying....it's real. Something IS wrong. Go to the BEST Drs you can!! Good luck!!

Hi there just a thought. After my gallbladder was taken out I was diagnosed with Ulcerstive Colitis which is an auto immune disease. I read you have Lupus which is also an auto mine disease. Reading your symptoms have you been tested for Crohns or Ulceratuve colitis? The reason I ask is your symptoms are so typical of UC and often when we have an auto immune disease there can be more that develop. Just a thought!

      Hi Bouncymounsey

I just learned that once we have our GB out that we can no longer digest fats, including fat soluble vitamins--A, D, E and K.  After looking into that, I stumbled upon some digestive enzymes that are a must if you eat anything fatty---specifically digestive enzymes that include Ox Bile in it.  I hope you try that and it may eliminate agony after a fatty meal.

Yes I do the reason is from all the food being in your body through the whole day and then your pancreas getting exhaustive because it's not working correctly to to your gallbladder Then I get the pain so what your experience is quite normal I don't with it for 5 years then have my gallbladder taken it but I still have to be on a strict diet after your goal batteries out no fat and no fried foods

My frustration is that I have been eating healthy....clean eating, good fats, etc.  Does this mean you can't have any fats, i.e., avocadoes, olive oil, grapeseed oil, nuts, etc.??

I had my gallbladder removed over 15 years ago and have suffered with diarrhea and pain off and on ever since.   Have seen no less than 5 gastro specialists and been scoped and MRI'd over and over, with no help.   Finally my primary care physician has put me on GEMFIBROZIL TAB 600 ML and I am hoping that will help but have only been on for 5 days, so hasn't stopped pain yet.   CHOLESTYRAMINE FOR ORAL SUSPENSION has been given for diarrhea in the past and it helped but nobody ever told me to use it every day.   The PCP doctor said it is the same drug as GEMFIBROZIL only in powder form.   Please try this and I hope it works for both of us.

you dont have to go fat free. eat healthy fats like avocado, oily fish, grass fed butter, organic eggs, coconut oil.
