Gallbladder is gone so where is this pain from?

HI

Had the dreaded gallbladder removed last June after only 7 months of pain (so I'm pretty lucky).

Everything went well, home the same day - took a good 4 weeks to feel totally better after the op but eating was ok and I don't seem to be affected by bowel issues like some people.

Only problem is I have dull ache in exactly the same place I used to get the gallbladder pain. It's not intense pain but it's in the front RUQ under my ribs and moves round the side and to my back.

It doesn't seem to appear after anything in particular and most of the time it's there constantly. Suppose it's more of an annoyance than anything else because I'm always aware of this ache. I'm quite reluctant to go to my GP because after spending about 7 months constantly in the surgery last year updating painkillers and nausea pills I don't want them to think I'm addicted to medical attention.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar or if it's just a by-product of surgery that I'll have to get on with?

Thanks

Hi everyone, as you may know my gallbladder was removed in Jan I am still having some phantom pain however not as bad , does still depend on what I eat so am staying away from fatty foods which is helping, but cant seem to find out what triggers the attacks , seems to be something different every time . Does anyone else have same problems with food.

I can't tell you all how much this discussion has helped me. I will still get a check up but the descriptions of the aches and pains and discomfort are exactly how I feel. I got my GB removed laparoscopically 4 years ago. Most of the time I'm fine but I think certain foods make the discomfort worse. GB attacks are a pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy and getting it removed was a relief until these aches started occuring.

I'm glad to know it isn't just me, but sad that anyone has to deal with these after effects.

    Take care everyone.

I don't think food causes my pain. I'll be sleep an all of a Sutton the pain will hit me. On my upper left abdomen and the pain radiates to my back. An when I do eat it makes the pain worse. So I found out drinking and hitting hard candy don't cause any pain. So imagine going 3 to 4 days on candy and liquids. Same thing I did when having problems with my gallbladder

Waiting on the results of my ct scan I had saturday morning. I've been hurting fir 4 days ending sunday, but is nauseated all the time. Dr wanted me to have one while I was hurting to see if it shows anything. I really think it's my pancreas because my stomach looks good. Have had endoscopic and colonscopy. I just don't understand so tired of the pain. Told the dr I'm not faking the pain is real. It comes like labor pains. Ugh so frustrating

You are doing everything right, all the right follow-up tests.  Let us know if you are getting some relief.  I do know how aggravating this is!

My friend just mentioned that after she had her gallbladder removed, she had persistent pain in the same area also. They discovered a gallstone that had somehow been missed in the surgery. She had to have that removed and was fine after that.

Well my results from the CT Scan was normal, don't understand.

Hello happyalien!  I had my gallbladder removed via laproscopy about 4 years ago.  I take Nexium 2x a day for acid reflux.  Overall, I feel much better without my gallbladder, however, I too have recurrent pain in the same area as you and many others who have posted here.  Mine is usually after every meal until my slow to digest stomach is clear.  According to my surgeon, my pain is due to scar tissue that resulted from several extra-large gallstones that were lodged in that area of my gallbladder.  I too worry that maybe it's pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer as my uncle died from that type of cancer 3 years ago.  It went undetected until it was stage 4.  Scary.  I've mentioned this to my gastroenterologist but since I have clear bloodwork and no cancer symptoms, he doubts it is anything other than what the surgeon has said -- scar tissue that creates an uncomfortable pressure/ache when I eat or drink alot of fluids.  It's very annoying and because of it, I do not drink enough water because if I do drink alot of water, the pain is there like after a meal.  I'm hoping that if I lose 25 lbs it will stop.  Fingers crossed weight watchers plan will work and finally I will be pain free from the gallbladder ordeal.  Good luck to you, happyalien.  Maybe by now you are all better.

It's been a year since my surgery. Having the same problems as everyone else. Reading the threads, it doesn't matter if it was laser or open, everyone is having the same difficulty. Eating different and drinking more water is fine but we have still not gotten to the root cause. The medical community has failed, and the only answer is more drugs. Pharmaceutical companies get rich and we have to live the discomfort. It appears that the brain, body and nervous system has not registered the absence of the gall badder. The bile is released in lower or small intestinal but our bodies is still registering an attack where the gall badder would step in and attempt to make corrections. Hundreds of thousands of people are affected but doctors have done nothing. Stop experimenting and help the people not your wallets and the pharmaceutical companies. We want to and deserve to live long and prosperous lives. Having to live with it is not acceptable. We've placed our trust in the medical community and deserve better and sincere health care.

It is so nice to see the truth written. I have suffered with this and feel like a fool. No one will admit that this is real.

Thank you for starting this thread.  I'm am having an attack right now and I'm so frustrated.  I am so thankful to know I'm not alone.  Been having 2-3 attacks a year since 2000, they last 2-5 days; squeezing pain in my back and a burn in the muscle.  Had the GB removed in 2007 and 2 sphincter of oodi operations to open the the valve.  Still having the attacks.  The doctors act like I'm nuts or trying to get pain meds.  I eat very healthy, aside from the crazy olive oil and lemon juice shots I drink to combat this phantom gallbladder issue.  I've been given omeprazole too, but have not seen a connection to the attacks.  The attacks come and stay whether I take omeprezole or not.  The only reason I agree that it is gastro related is that IF I eat during an attack, the spasm gets more frequent and more intense and I burp.  I also take hyoscamine (anti-spasmodic) and percoset during an attack and that seems to help me get through the worst of it.  I have attacks whether I eat vegetarian (with no dairy) or if I eat meat and cheese.  The attacks have no rhyme or reason.  I've started taking digize (essential oil) 3 weeks ago, but here I am having an attack (the first one since November).  I am going to sift through all your responses and see if there is some relief out there.  I'm so happy not to be alone.  Today was awful and I was feeling hopeless.  Just knowing there are others has given me hope that we can figure this out.  Thank you.

Hi happyalien and anyone else out there, I just Googled info. regarding this subject ad was surprisingly unhappy to read SO many posts regarding the same gallbladder issues my older daughter (25 yr. old) has been experiencing since her GB removal almost 3 years ago. I know your original post is dated over a year ago and I'm hoping that someone out there has had a positive break in dealing with all the problems you all have mentioned in your various posts to this pain. She was only 22 when the severe pain landed her in the ER, then gallbladder surgery. I too have had mine removed but many, many years ago. I believe in 1997. It kills me to see her in such anguish from the pain, sometimes the intense pain is so bad that it causes her to vomit violently, other times the bloating, dirrehea, constant stomach upset, acid reflux, lately she's mentioned taking a scolding hot shower against her back helps to relieve much of the pain under her ribs. I have been after her to contact the GI doc that came highly reccomended, but to insist on seeing teh actual doctor this time and NOT the Nurse Practictioner. She was given a top of the tongue pain med to help with the pain which does help a lot, but it's only a temporary fix. I was starting to worry that maybe it could be something having to do with her liver. But like someone else mentioned, that their blood work had shown their liver enzymes would spike during the poit when the pain level was at it's worse.

So I am hopeful that someone out there has been fortunate enough to get the help needed to conquer this pain. Please let me know.

Hi, it may be SOD? Off the many consultants visited, the only one that had the full picture was DR. Westaby NHS Hammersmith...pls bring your daughter to him.

      Keep me posted

That's a no can do. We live in California... London is not exactly a financially doable reality for us. But  thank you for your input.

Sorry. As it sounds very like SOD, you are lucky in that the world leader is Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

In the meantime, 20mg per day of Amitriptyline may help........taken at night, suffer the tiredness and stick with it for at least 2 months?

Hi, yes I get the same pain it seems. To me, I feel I've still got trapped stones, but a scan shows I don't. The pain makes me bend double, sweat and on verge of vomiting. Laying flat relieves it, but not doable in public, so you have to deal with it. Long term use of lansoprolol or the likes long term I had, however I stopped them as they made no difference, also they can contribute to vit B12 deficiency, which I just had to have an injection for..
