Gallbladder is gone so where is this pain from?

HI

Had the dreaded gallbladder removed last June after only 7 months of pain (so I'm pretty lucky).

Everything went well, home the same day - took a good 4 weeks to feel totally better after the op but eating was ok and I don't seem to be affected by bowel issues like some people.

Only problem is I have dull ache in exactly the same place I used to get the gallbladder pain. It's not intense pain but it's in the front RUQ under my ribs and moves round the side and to my back.

It doesn't seem to appear after anything in particular and most of the time it's there constantly. Suppose it's more of an annoyance than anything else because I'm always aware of this ache. I'm quite reluctant to go to my GP because after spending about 7 months constantly in the surgery last year updating painkillers and nausea pills I don't want them to think I'm addicted to medical attention.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar or if it's just a by-product of surgery that I'll have to get on with?

Thanks

I have been having issues for over 20 years, so I'll make this as short as possible. Had GB removed when LAP SX was new by an older surgeon.  I always got the attacks in my chest, not my abdomen around my back...always the chest. The pain is worse than labor.  5 years after I started to feel something wasn't right...like an attack was starting.  I called my GP and on the way it went full blown. They took me by ambulance to hospital. This attacked lasted 5 days. They did endoscopy and thought the liver was producing stones but they passed so they held off on doing an ERCP. Basically I was a walking timebomb. 3 years later again, another full blown attack. They did an ultrasound and when that doppler hit my chest the pain went away. LIfe renewed and I left the ER to follow up with gastroenterologist. BC it stopped, it was a waiting game. A few years later, I called my doctor and told him I know an attack is imminent. He met me at the ER. He said we are doing the ERCP...which is cut the sphincter muscle in the common bile duct so stones pass and the muscle doesn't contract. Also, my liver levels swap....the low goes high and the high goes low which is how he knew for sure i was about to have another attack. He does the ERCP, uses dye and in a few hours had not one but two full blown attacks. He came in the next morning looking defeated. I said what the heck happened...I should not have felt anything. He confided in me that when he put the dye in it leaked out where the original surgeon tied off the Gall Bladder stump. He didn't tie it off properly and when I would get a build up of bile it would leak into my abdomen reaking havoc causing the same pain. So here I am again, about to have another attack. I've been putting off going to the ER but its been painful....4/10 but no one can touch the area as it would put me through the roof, have to walk gently and avoid bumps when I'm driving.  I'm going to the ER tomorrow to meet my gastro doctor so he can finally go in and finish the original surgery. (why he didn't do it when he did the ERCP is a mystery to me.) I pray this is all it is and I don't go into a full blown attack before tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!

I had mine taken out about 10 years ago and ivery this past year I have started to have some major pain sometimes after eating and other times just out of nowhere. It feels like a galbladder attack. Mine always bothered me at center stomach that would shoot out all around. Tonight it hurt more than it ever has. On a pain scale, I would say it was about a 6 or 7. It never goes to my back that I remember. Any info you can help with would be much appreciated. I have not had it checked out yet as at first I thought maybe it was an ulcer or something because it would hit right under my bra. Now it's moved further down.

When they did mine, the stones were so impressive and they said I was so full of them that there were some in my bike duct and they had to admit me and go get those the next day. I wonder if this has anything to do with that.

I've spent maybe an hour reading this thread, there seems to be so much 'advice' here but no real solutions, yet we all seem to be suffering the same condition!

?I too had my gall bladder out (about 3 years ago) and about a month after it was gone the side pain came back. Its never excruciating, on a pain scale it's a 2... But on an annoyance scale its a firm 11 out of 10!

?It's in the upper right quadrant of my abdomen just below the ribs and it's driving me mad!

?At first it would go away for a while, then return. Now it's permanent, it never eases. My reasoning behind this is 'something' is causing it... But like so many others my MRI showed nothing, my doctor thinks it's neuropathic pain from my back condition (Cauda Equina Syndrome) I do not think it's that, I think 'something' is making my side hurt like this, I just wish to god I knew what!

?I read a post further on up about Primary billiary Chirrosis and I have 3 out of the 6 main symptoms of that (including this damn side pain!) but I am currently having a blood test every 3 months or so for an unrelated condition (vitamin D deficiency) can anyone tell me, wouldn't that routine test show if I had any liver problems? Or do they have to specifically test for that sort of issue?

Any help there would be appreciated.

Any help at all is appreciated.

I am glad to know I'm not alone, but it doesnt make it feel any better sad

They have to run liver specific tests. I suffered with this at first as well, now miracuosly only if I am sick and can't eat that is when it strikes! The doctors never found anything with me either, neuropathic pain is what was diagnosed and that's all they did. I wish you the best in your journey.

Listen...We must get to the bottom of this.  There are too many people suffering .  I do not have this but my daughter does.  It is ruining her life.  I have a friend who had this about 15 to 10 years ago.  One of her attacks was so bad she went to the hospital.  The emergency room doctor was perfect...he said he knew what was wrong.  He did not have to do the tests which often come back negative.  She had a narrowing of the biliary duct.  All he did was insert something to widen the duct and she has been fine ever since.  However, before the surgery he had to treat her for pancreatitis, for four days, with IV's. The danger, when having these symptoms and not getting the help you need, is that pancreatitis or liver disease can occur.

I am in the United States and 200,000 or more of these surgeries are being done every year, with 20 to 40 percent of them resulting in these debilitating conditions.  There is something wrong with this picture.  The doctor who treated my friend is still working.  His name is Dr. James Boylan and his phone number is 610-866-9770.  He is also with St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA.  I don!t know if he will respond.  I am trying to get my daughter to see him.  He no longer takes new patients and she is giving up.  I hope you find a doctor to help you.  All the best.

Hi Cheryl - I too was diagnosed with fatty liver after my gallbladder removal and suffered from pain. I read about a study where patients were given 600mg of Pantethine daily for 6 months that took care of the fatty liver. Since taking it for 3 months now, I feel so much better. The pain is gone as well as the distended upper abdomen that was due to gas. It also helps lower cholesterol. Hope this helps.

I apologize. Something happened with my phone. But to end my story, nothing else has made sense so far. I don't drink with the exception of 2-5% wine or wine coolers and even that's occasional. But it's the only thing that explains why I would have any elevated enzyme levels of the liver in me and the pain. If u take birth control, look into it.

I got my gall bladder removed 4 years ago. Ever since I get the exact same type of attacks all the time. Whenever I am lying down and I reach much to the side or sit up or bend over...

Anything effecting my core center. (Abdominal)

My main however is horrid. And as with you and hundreds of posts ... No Dr. explains it. They just blame it on muscles. Which never happened before the gall bladder issue.

I started feeling the same exact things you have mentioned after almost a year of pain free living following my gallbladder removal.

i know you posted over a year ago but I'm hoping you see this and possibly have an answer for what we are experiencing.

    Thanks

I second your discovery. I do believe it is all connected As I too just recently dealt with the same pain and I had my gallbladder removed over 2 years ago. If we developed gallstones to begin with, there has to be an underlying reason or cause for that alone. My dr diagnosed me with GERD which as many know is a reflux disease. It was explained to me that even tho the gallbladder is gone, you can still develop gallstones and they can cause blockage. However, after all the testing, there was no gallstones or blockage for me. All of my test was good but my dr explained that reflux disease can cause that same pain. She stated the sphincter opens up near the same area the gallbladder is in and when you develop reflux, that end of the esophagus is backed up or is irritated by the stomach acids per the burning and/or pain. I have been advised to eat smaller meals and cut back on fried foods and caffeine. She also mentioned if u have extra weight around ur waist and stomach can contribute to reflux becuz it is pushing up on the end that empties everything in ur stomach. The other day I had only a chicken sandwich and half a fry. It was all I ate that day yet I felt full so quickly; and shortly after that, I started to feel this pulling and tightness sensation in my chest area that felt like it wanted to migrate around to my back in the same area. That day I happen to have some Zantac. I took one and 30 to 45 mins later, the symptoms disappeared so just based on that alone, I to do believe this is all connected.

Additionally, I have been told that my cholesterol was little high in the past. Hence, that is what gallstones are made of so I'm pretty sure we should be watching the things we eat at least for me. So for those who have been dealing with pain, mine has been due to reflux. Does anyone else have any similarities??? Maybe after some comparing, we can narrow down if this is what it really is.

hi everyone im new, and happy i found you. a year ago i had GB removed after a couple of years of tests, mri, endoscopy, colonoscopy, nausea every morning. tests found hiatal hernia/gallstones. after trying naturopathic and OTC, i consented to remove GB. Davinci robot removed it; Doc sed GB was "stretched" i expected to have instant relief-wrong. i still experience a pinch, or twinge across upper stomach every morn and mild bloating. ive lost 12lbs, drnk lots water, eat smaller low fat meals. i take Zantac (ranitidine 300mg/daily), maalox as needed. all tests and doc say its GERD/stress-cant find anything else wrong. i should be grateful however my dad died of pancreatic cancer and mom- lung cancer which is always haunting. i dont drink or smoke and try to eat healthy and stay physically fit. from reading the posts it seems my symptoms are common.i guess its something i have to accept and move on. i hope ya'll feel better soon!thanks 4 sharing

I am sorry to hear that. Try digestive enzymes they might help.

I had severe pain attacks years after my gb was removed. No one ever found any reason for it. It slowly went away again, thank god!

ty. thats encouraging. i do take probiotics and will start the digestive enzymes. the worst time of day is b4 i get out of bed in the morning. thats when i have this twinge. doc sed its all the stomach juices collecting from sleeping. once i start moving around im usually fine unless i eat something that causes indigestion. def staying off carbs, smaller meals and lots of water helps. i still have bloatiness. its frustrating for sure.

Hi Peggy! I think you are right when I went gluten free after having my gallbladder out I didn't have any pain but ever since adding carbs and gluten back I have had this dull ache where my gallbladder was. It comes and goes and it is worse sometimes after I eat. Have your symptoms come back? I'm going to try to go very low carb and hope this goes away! Most annoying pain ever and I had my gallbladder out 5 years ago! Thanks for the advice!
