Gallbladder is gone so where is this pain from?

HI

Had the dreaded gallbladder removed last June after only 7 months of pain (so I'm pretty lucky).

Everything went well, home the same day - took a good 4 weeks to feel totally better after the op but eating was ok and I don't seem to be affected by bowel issues like some people.

Only problem is I have dull ache in exactly the same place I used to get the gallbladder pain. It's not intense pain but it's in the front RUQ under my ribs and moves round the side and to my back.

It doesn't seem to appear after anything in particular and most of the time it's there constantly. Suppose it's more of an annoyance than anything else because I'm always aware of this ache. I'm quite reluctant to go to my GP because after spending about 7 months constantly in the surgery last year updating painkillers and nausea pills I don't want them to think I'm addicted to medical attention.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar or if it's just a by-product of surgery that I'll have to get on with?

Thanks

I am having the same problem. I feel like I'm having a gall bladder attack but I had my gall bladder out 7 years ago! I finally went to my doctor yesterday and now after blood work I have to go for an ultrasound. They put me on the same meds I see a lot of people are on in this feed. I hope I feel better soon as well as everyone one else who is suffering from this.

I also have severe sudden abdominal pain I call them attacks (first time paramedics thought was an heart attack) ecg always show fine... I've suffered this since pregnancy 12 months ago at first I was sent home with acid reflux/ indigestion but after several attacks and me phoning 999 for the pain I finally was referred to hospital from my gp for an ultra sound scan when my daughter was 2 weeks old (I was home alone with my 2 week old when I had the attack, I couldn't get to my crying baby) 😭 they saw I had stones and some big ones may I add and finally had the gallbladder removed 3 weeks ago.. I thought that's it I'm cured until 3 days later I had a severe attack and called 999 it resulted in another stay in hospital and had X-ray ultra sound came back fine the only thing that came back was my bloods liver showing high?? But I was sent home with antibiotics and no help! I'm still here no answers like all you! I'm so thankful to fine this forum and feeling I'm no longer alone so thank you and hopefully we can find some answers!

I have felt very suicidal but I have a beautiful 6months old daughter who I need to fight for I tried 4 years of fertility to have her now this! Good luck to you all xx

Congrats on your beautiful baby and I hope you get the help you need.   For 15 years I have suffered this pain but recently, it hasn't gone away and I can understand wanting to "give up".   Constant pain is indescribable and I am old and can just lay around so can't imagine how hard it is to take care of your infant.   Please try the GEMFIBROZIL TAB 600 ml or the Cholestyramine for Oral Supension.   I am praying that this is going to help.

Given the number of comments, this is a common problem. I had my gallbladder out 35 years ago, and over the years, I've had sharp twinges in th area, occasionally. This morning, I awoke with excruciating, sharp pain in the area, like I was being stabbed and could hardly breathe in.

I quickly took a dicyclomine, a muscle relaxant for the gut that I always have on hand. Then I put my arm above me in the air to open the rib cage and gently massaged the area to find the source of the pain, and suddenly the pain stopped - far too soon for the pain med to be working. It fit with my theory that once and a while, a gallstone exits from my liver. I also believe the pain in the area causes cramping, which is why I take the med.

I sure do understand what many of you experience and am at a loss for why this possibility is not part of our post op education with a treatment plan offered.

Really this is for anyone but you have been on forum recently and have been through alot so I chose to reply to you. I'm wondering if anyone has had swelling along with pain in area where gallbladder was? I went to doctor and he said it was possible it was gallstone (I had gallbladder removed June 2015) but I didn't seem to be in loads of pain so he didn't really think that was the cause. It does hurt but I'm used to being in pain so don't show it as much and just the way I am. Anyway, it is quite swollen but I haven't seen this as a symptom.

HAVE you been tested for sphincter of odi dysfunction or biliary dysconescia (sp?)

Sometimes the whole biliary system slows down and the sphincter muscle stops opening causing bile to back up

    Scarring can occur

I had my sphincter cut (the procedure cause pancrearititis -in fact every ERCP has cause it. But there is a potential for some relief- I had a diseased gallbladder for over 10 years-no stones so if. Rise I was crazy-right?! When they finally removed it -the gallbladder had adhered to my liver-the surgeon literally said it was the most diseased gallbladder he'd ever seen.

Do not accept "your fine", "it's in your head" etc. demand a diagnosis and find a doctor willing to work to a solution! My last hospitalization and ERCP resulted in he entire biliary system full of sludge and barely working and I was in so much pain I felt I was dying....it's real. Something IS wrong. Go to the BEST Drs you can!! Good luck!!

I know this post is old but my doctor told me the pain I'm still having is from the clips they placed on the connection back when they did the open procedure they used dissolvable stitches not they put clips in there that stay now with any foreign body in the body your body sees as alien and will attack it this can cause pain and liver enzymes to rise mine do anytime my body decides it needs to attack the clips they placed but it's not life threatening so I can't find anyone willing to do unnecessary surgery to remove them because the risk is higher than the benefit hope this helps some

I've had the exact same pain for over a month now and I keep getting passed from doctor to doctor. I even saw a GI doctor and he just put me on some pain meds and like you said they only work for about an hour and the pain is back. I feel awful and am at a loss about what to do. I am not myself!

Had my gall bladder removed 4 months ago. I still have surgery what I am calling ghost pains in the same place my gall bladder was. Heard from my surgeon that my gall bladder was a nasty one along with him saying I waited to long to take it out (mind you he was one that canceled my surgery two previous times). My primary Dr said it can be just my body is still trying I get used I my gall bladder not being there and throbbing like it was before. I am very sensitive to certain foods. It has been trial and error for me.
