Gallbladder is gone so where is this pain from?

HI

Had the dreaded gallbladder removed last June after only 7 months of pain (so I'm pretty lucky).

Everything went well, home the same day - took a good 4 weeks to feel totally better after the op but eating was ok and I don't seem to be affected by bowel issues like some people.

Only problem is I have dull ache in exactly the same place I used to get the gallbladder pain. It's not intense pain but it's in the front RUQ under my ribs and moves round the side and to my back.

It doesn't seem to appear after anything in particular and most of the time it's there constantly. Suppose it's more of an annoyance than anything else because I'm always aware of this ache. I'm quite reluctant to go to my GP because after spending about 7 months constantly in the surgery last year updating painkillers and nausea pills I don't want them to think I'm addicted to medical attention.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar or if it's just a by-product of surgery that I'll have to get on with?

Thanks

I have had this pain for 15 years and saw a new gastro doctor last Friday.   I thought it was connected to a tube they leave in when they remove gallbladder.   He believes it is a tube that in part of the stomach and gave me Pepcid 20 mg.   The pain is some better and we are doing a scope on Feb. 5.  I will let you know what we find.   Very painful.

For those of you who have had your gallbladder removed. I have had mine out for 7 yrs now and have been experiencing gallbladder attacksfor at lease 3 years on and off. Did some research and found that stone can be still manufactured in the liver. Just because the bladder is gone does not leave you out of the woods. Dieting and with liver supplements will be your life. Detox your liver and add ox bile and digestive enzyme and vitamin D 5000iu's supplements and you will live a long healthy life. It's working for me and I feel great, take care of your liver is the bottom line.

    Hello All

I had my gallbladder removed in 2008 and I began having excruciating pains shortly after. The pains normally come randomly (mostly early am causing me to wake up). They start off light and ease into a 10+ pain scale. I can’t sit, talk or do anything except get into a comfortable bending position and hold on for dear life. It causes some sweating at time. They normally last anywhere from 5 minutes-13 minutes (yes I’ve timed them). It is always in the abdominal upper right and quadrant and it’s a very dull and aching pain. I’ve had alllll of the test everyone else has. I’ve had an MRCP, ERCP, lab test, and sonogram. I’ve not yet had a colonoscopy yet. I know my doctors think I’m going crazy, but I know I’m def not. My first GI doctor suspected that I had Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, but others say differently. I was started on Hyoscyamine in 2009 and it helped for a little while. Then one day....they returned. I saw yet another GI doctor and he started me on Amitriptyline which is used for depression but can also be used for pain as well. Unfortunately they stopped working after a year. I have no clue what the next step is, but I refuse to give up and deal with this discomfort for the rest of my life. The pain is a huge inconvenience, especially when your in public and you have the look of discomfort in your face and the sweating that comes with the pain. I even thought it was cardiac related but according to my cardiac cath that I recently had, my heart condition is in good standing. Not to mention, the pains only started AFTER I had my gallbladder removed. At this point, I’d be willing to take the gallbladder back lol.

Have you noticed any relation to certain foods? Many say fatty foods cause them pain, while I've noticed chocolate bars/chips have often seemed to be part of the cause.

I haven't heard of the medicines you've tried, but have you tried Omeprazole? I think it's helped some from this thread. I took it for a few months, and my pain (which was less severe) seemed to go away. It came back when I stopped the Omeprazole, though. I don't want to take that medicine long term, so I am trying a liver supplement from my local health store. It seems to be working but I'm sure I'll have to get the MRI eventually.

I hope you can find some answers. Sorry for your pain!

I tried Omeprazole as well. It didn’t do much for it. I drink a lot of water with lemon and I’ve noticed that if I have at least a cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice throughout the day in my water, the pains are less severe and sometimes non existent. I belive lemon aids in digestion as well. Dark alcohol is def a trigger for it. Certain fatty foods make it worse as well. I’ve been doing a lot of lemon water, soups and grilled chicken lately and I’ve also decreased my liquor intake as well. Even days that I eat perfectly healthy I may have them. I think it just has a mind of its own at this point. I wish there was a doctor that could tell us what this is. I’ll let everyone know if anything else I’m doing works out. I started sleeping on my right side and I actually haven’t had the pain at all in 3 days.

Hi. I did experience pain in the same area; in the same way prior to be having my gallbladder moved. I didn't experience this pain until I know at least 2 years after I had the surgery  which is what made me nervous. Eventually, I did go to the ER as it seemed to be getting worse. They could not find anything wrong and I was referring to my family Dr. They advised I had symptoms of GERD. I was prescribed something for pain and I was told I could take something for acid reflux. I was advised that when the stomach acid backs up in your esophagus, it can cause pain in that same area. I did purchase I believe prilosax. I cant be sure but it was one of the better otc medications for acid reflux and one day while on the road, I felt another episode trying to come on to the point of I had to sit down and sit still at a store we stopped by. Forgetting I had them in my purse, I thought about it and I took one immediately .Right away I started feeling relief. Just based on my research and what Ive gathered so far, diet has to play a role, it has to. If you are prone to acid reflux but still like to occasionally eat what you want, you may want to try keeping the stomach acid at bay. I havent had another episode in a This is my experience however. Hope everything works out for you.

    Hi Happalien

I am also facing the same problem. Going to the Gastro dr is useless giving nausea and gas medicine does not help much. I can't eat much for dinner too now especially even lean meat or fish. Lost so much weight. Just can't find solution to what to do....

I know this is old, but people seem to still be commenting. After my gallbladder had been gone a few years, I started having very similar pains as well as sharp shoulder pains. It turned out to be an ulcer with referred pain. I took omeprazole and it eventually went away after a couple of weeks. I took it for maybe 4 weeks total and then stopped. When it comes back, I start again and it eventually goes away. I feel like somehow without my gallbladder, my digestive system is more acidic and if I don't eat enough meats or don't eat for a long period of time, I start getting ulcers again. Just wanted to throw that out there bc I was fearing the worst, and it is definitely just an ulcer. ("just an ulcer" meaning its not fatal. The ulcer can hurt 100% as much as the gallbladder attacks did!)

I have the same problem! I had my gallbladder removed last year after almost 2 years of pain and the drs telling me I didn’t have anything wrong wiTh me. They didn’t think someone my age would have gallbladder issues. I was 23 at the time it all started. The pain stopped after the removal for a good 2 or 3 months and then it hit me again. So I went to the hospital last night and they told me that my pain could be caused because the bile ducts had not been removed in the process of removing the gallbladder. So I’m making myself a dr Appointment this week and I’m gonna find out if that is the issue.

I was the same! I was in so much pain that I couldn’t work or hold my niece sad so it took a full year of tests and I told the doctor I want to go to a pain specialist so I went to the pain specialist and he said I had nerve damage from when the cut me open! I got a nerve block into my side and it’s the best thing ever I’m on no painkillers now and starting work again soon 😊

Gosh that is great.  I have HH and GERD with pain all over the place.  Not gb but I am still interested in the nerve block.  I have seen loads of posts on pain after gb removal and referred pain which can be as bad as the pain when still having the gb but never heard of a nerve block.  What is it and how does it operate.  This could help so many peeps.

Really glad you are obviously feeling better smile

Nerve block is when they inject you with huge ass needle but you can’t feel it because numb your stomach before hand! It’s an anesthetic that is put into your stomach where the pain is and it numbs the nerves for a couple of months to try repair them themselves 😊 I got mine 3 months ago and it’s great! I do get pain every now and again form where they put the needle in but I’d rather that than every day pain! Hope this helps! If you have any more questions let me know 😊

Could it be a hiatus hernia? I have it also. Only way to see if you have it is if you get a scope down your throat
