Gastritis and being unable to eat- is this normal?

Posted , 85 users are following.

Towards the end of May I started to lose my appetite and wasn't able to eat as much as normal, I also kept feeling nauseous. I didn't think much of it at the time as I was doing a lot of running and thought it was just the exercise.

it progressively got worse to the point where I felt so sick I wasn't eating. I went to the GP and was told it was gastritis and given omeprazole to take once a day. I have stuck to a plain diet and am only really eating plain rice, homemade veg soup and plain omelette but it doesn't feel like I am getting any better.

My my main symptom is that I feel incredibly full after eating the tiniest amount such as half a banana. I have tried to eat little and often but I feel like the food just sits in my stomach and makes me feel sick. I have now lost 1 stone in 2 weeks and the weight is continuing to drop off me but I can't eat enough to sustain my weight. I've gone from being fit and active to being signed off work and unable to do anything.

Blood tests all came back normal so I'm being referred to a specialist, however in the meantime I feel like my whole life is on hold.

Has anyone else been unable to eat with gastritis? And are there any tips for reducing the uncomfortable feeling of fullness after any food?

    Hello Emily

I know that it is quite some time after you posted this question but do you still suffer from the daily nausea? I am 16 and over a couple of months, grown increasingly nauseas every single day. I have very similar symptoms to you and am about to see a specialist but i feel so sick and don't feel like eating... Do you ever get better?

Hi, I have the same but it has been going on for years. It got better and now it came back. I have lost around 10kg, I can't eat, I am burping and nauseous all the time and I am feeling super weak. I can't manage to keep anything in and I am starting to get worried as it is starting to affect my work and my life in general. I have tried all the medicines....now I am taking esomeprazol and something that avoids me to puke....reflux is still there and I get very car sick lately. If anyone has any answer on what to do please let me know....I was able to eat porridge but now I can't even take that 😦

When I first found out that I had stomach issues it was because I was literally dying from the pain. I also went to the emergency room several times before I was referred to a GI specialist. I lost 30lbs in a month which is like 2.14 stone according to google. It was HORRIBLE. I wanted to die. I couldn't eat anything except scrambled eggs and corn tortillas. However, time heals all. I'm sure you might have some ulcers as well that are making the pain worse. Once they heal, you will be able to eat a little better. I'm currently having another flare up and it hurts like nobody's business. Every time I eat its so uncomfortable and if I don't eat it hurts too. You're not alone. Just know that. ♡

if you really have gastritis, please don't do tough/tiring exercises. i also have gastritis and it was even difficult to sleep with it and I developed sleep apnea.but till then i was easy while eating but when i started exercises to loose my weight, (i am 52kg, but i thought may be loosing weight can be helpful) I cannot drink even water easily. a small amount of water makes me full as well as thirsty. i feel worst nowadays with this "fullness" issue

    Hi

I have been exactly the same as you. Mine started end of March. I wasn't getting better with Omeprazole. I too have stuck to the bland diet. I have lost a stone in weight. Do you get heartburn too? My Dr upped the Omeprazole to 40mg a few days ago and the symptoms have improved quite a bit, except for last night I got bad heartburn. It must have been something my stomach didn't like. My blood tests were all ok too. I just want to feel normal again.

Man many of our digestive issues stem from food intolerance of which I have found personally gluten and wheat when eliminated from the diet for a couple weeks you will see significant improvement. I know I did also eating meals double the frequency but half the serving made a huge difference for me as well. there is hope and healing is available to those who are willing to pay the price

This post has been very informative, and encouraging.

I have recently been diagnosed with gastritis caused by H.pylori, after my breath test came back positive.

It all started for me around 2 months ago.

I work up feeling terrible, really bad indigestion and feeling very weak and sick.

I assumed it was a hangover (as I had over indulged the night before), and sucked it up.

After a few more days of this feeling, I realised it must be something else and initially thought it may even be Covid19 (due to chest/upper abdominal pain and shortness of breath). I researched into it online and stupidly self diagnosed myself with GERD.

I took a lot of antacids and ignored the problem, being a stereotypical male.

    Big mistake.

One even around 3 weeks ago I had such severe upper abdomen and chest pain that I could hardly breath (probably partially bought on by anxiety as I thought I was having a heart attack!) I called the ambulance who took me to A&E and conducted an ECG and blood tests on me.

Both came back fine and 'text book'.

After a chat with a very intelligent Dr, I was diagnosed finally with gastritis.

As previously mentioned, this gastritis was bought on by H.pylori and not from supplement deficiency or excess alcohol (which i was surprised at!).

I have started a 1 week course of the triple therapy (ppi, +2 antibiotics), and hope it kills the bacteria up so my stomach lining can mend.

I've irresponsibly had the odd beer the last few weeks and It makes me feel terrible the next day, so i'm going cold turkey for a while.

Has anyone experience if this triple therapy works and time scales to get back to normal.

Also does anyone feel more like 'chest pains', then stomach?

I hope anyone who is experiencing this, is better or gets better soon.

I'm a bit of a suck-it-up and carry on guy but the reflux, bloating, nausea, chest pains, random bowel movements and general weakness/tiredness has really had an impact on my mental health too!

I'll report back in a week or so and hopefully can give some encouragement to others the medication works and give them hope!

This is so true. More chest pains than stomach pains. Though the bloating feels a discomfort in the upper abdomen that is kind of a dull pain.

      Hope you are already well!
