Gastritis and being unable to eat- is this normal?

Towards the end of May I started to lose my appetite and wasn't able to eat as much as normal, I also kept feeling nauseous. I didn't think much of it at the time as I was doing a lot of running and thought it was just the exercise.
it progressively got worse to the point where I felt so sick I wasn't eating. I went to the GP and was told it was gastritis and given omeprazole to take once a day. I have stuck to a plain diet and am only really eating plain rice, homemade veg soup and plain omelette but it doesn't feel like I am getting any better.
My my main symptom is that I feel incredibly full after eating the tiniest amount such as half a banana. I have tried to eat little and often but I feel like the food just sits in my stomach and makes me feel sick. I have now lost 1 stone in 2 weeks and the weight is continuing to drop off me but I can't eat enough to sustain my weight. I've gone from being fit and active to being signed off work and unable to do anything.
Blood tests all came back normal so I'm being referred to a specialist, however in the meantime I feel like my whole life is on hold.
Has anyone else been unable to eat with gastritis? And are there any tips for reducing the uncomfortable feeling of fullness after any food?

Hello! I know this post has been a while back but I'm happy I came across this since I have the same dilemma and it's kinda frustrating to deal with the symptoms.
I had a poor lifestyle--skipped meals, drank coffee with an empty stomach, probably have taken to much NSAIDs whenever I had headache, and didn't exercise as much; that's why I've been experiencing GERD (symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, indigestion, a bit of bloating, shortness of breath). I've taken medication (Omeprazole) for 2 weeks last Feb 2021 and have gotten a bit better.
But then I didn't learn my lesson and took things for granted, I still continued with my poor lifestyle, plus being stuck at home due to the covid pandemic didn't help either, so I've experienced anxiety and panic attacks as well. My GERD came back April 2021. I panicked a little because my chest pain was a little bit more intense. I got worried that it may be related to the heart. So when I had myself checked (blood tests, ECG, X-ray), everything came out normal. I've taken more medications (Omeprazole, Domperidone, Gaviscon) for another 2 weeks and got a little better.
I was okay and I felt like I was recovering a week after I was off-meds. But then after that week, I've again experienced severe bloating and I could not eat anything. I kinda also was having a hard time to breathe due to the bloating. I barely ate for almost 3 days. I've only had crackers and warm water with honey, and steamed tofu with plain porridge. But the bloating was not getting better.
Just this 1st week of May, I decided to visit a gastroenterologist and the doctor advised that I have to deal with the reflux symptoms because I have severe scoliosis. GERD / acid reflux is inevitable. But when I was further checked, the doctor tapped my belly and was found to have so much air. The doctor did not explicitly say it was Gastritis, but the symptoms I was feeling directed to it. So I was prescribed again with a different set of medication for 2 weeks (Mucosta, Domperidone, Rabeprazole).
I really do hope this time it works. It has only been my 3rd day of medication and I am not yet seeing any improvement. I been having a hard time to force eat just to maintain my weight. It's really alarming to lose weight due to digestive problems. Been feeling weak as well, probably because of the stomach discomfort and the lack of nutrients from food.
I hope everyone who left comments here have recovered as well. Thank you for sharing your stories. It feels really encouraging.
Question: Do you guys take multivitamins? I'm not sure but I think it is a trigger for gastritis attack.

look at what you eat and google its effect on body. Take an excellent probiotic with diverse cultures.

Take a diverse culture probiotic, one recommended by a dietitian. I use FLORAGEN GI. but haven't been on it long at all. PPI drug interferes with breakdown of protein in your stomach. not a good thing.

Sounds like me. I was prescribed omeprazole for mild GERD by a family practice PA. BAD DRUG. I have lost 14 lbs, gotten food intolerances, have bloating, and now gastritis. Before ever getting on a PPI, get an exam by a trusted gastroenterologist. So many push those drugs and they are dangerous. You may have needed just food diet counseling. GET OFF THE OMEPRAZOLE SAFELY NOW. FIRST SEE THE GI doc. I have been off for 7 days. i look like death. Anxiety. I am waiting for a endoscopy and will have stomach biopsied. I took them for 3 1/2 months and was miserable. still don't see light at the end of the tunnel. My life was ruined. My blood tests are all normal. Take care of yourself. NO ONE ELSE WILL. NOTE: lactose in these drugs and in many acid reducers, and not listed on box. Omeprazole can cause lactose intolerance. READ AND RUN.

I think the stomach is small and if the walls are inflamed and thicker, then the stomach is smaller yet?

Did you ever find out the cause, what triggered it and did you recover?
I did not even realise I was losing weight until my clothes started falling off, especially trousers.
I bought some in a smaller size ready for summer, but by the time summer came round, all the new stuff I'd bought was also too small by miles.
I have dropped 3 dress sizes and gone from 71kg to 56kg without trying.
I have no appetite and one mouthful makes me feel full. If I eat one mouthful too much or even think I've eaten too much, it all comes back up.
Finally the doc sent me for scan/MRI/blood/urine and pooh and all they have said is 'you don't have cancer'. I have a constant nagging low level pain around where I'd guess my appendix is, but doc says not that.
So I don't know if I have something medically wrong.... or if it's all in my head?!
Am delighted it's not cancer but am left puzzled.
I tried a food diary and couldn't pinpoint any links other than I know for sure I don't eat enough calories. .. but I felt I was beginning to obsess over food by constantly logging every mouthful and felt that was counterproductive.

yes i have kind if had stomach issues my whole life (im 28) but just in the last year it has gotten severe.. everytime i eat i bloat to the point i look 7 months pregnant, i go through episodes where with some foods (i havent figured them all out yet) i get severe cramping followed with diahrea and sometimes vomiting with nausea. I also poop about 8 times a day. Ive tried to stick to a gastritis diet but i still get triggered with some foods/ingrediants. The main thing i know that is helping is eating Ginger Chews after everything i eat. Helps with the nausea.. im waiting to get my appointment to get the camera down my throat to make sure its not anything major.. im at my wits end with this and dont know what to do anymore, i dont have energy and am fighting depression..
