Gastritis and being unable to eat- is this normal?
Posted , 85 users are following.
Towards the end of May I started to lose my appetite and wasn't able to eat as much as normal, I also kept feeling nauseous. I didn't think much of it at the time as I was doing a lot of running and thought it was just the exercise.
it progressively got worse to the point where I felt so sick I wasn't eating. I went to the GP and was told it was gastritis and given omeprazole to take once a day. I have stuck to a plain diet and am only really eating plain rice, homemade veg soup and plain omelette but it doesn't feel like I am getting any better.
My my main symptom is that I feel incredibly full after eating the tiniest amount such as half a banana. I have tried to eat little and often but I feel like the food just sits in my stomach and makes me feel sick. I have now lost 1 stone in 2 weeks and the weight is continuing to drop off me but I can't eat enough to sustain my weight. I've gone from being fit and active to being signed off work and unable to do anything.
Blood tests all came back normal so I'm being referred to a specialist, however in the meantime I feel like my whole life is on hold.
Has anyone else been unable to eat with gastritis? And are there any tips for reducing the uncomfortable feeling of fullness after any food?

You should check Functional Dyspepsia(Especially Postprandial Distress Symptom) or Gastroparesis related details, if you are able feeling full after very little food. If you could, get a Gastric Emptying test.

hey sorry i know this is an old post, maybe somebody can offer me simular help. I work as a carer and am reasonably active. over a period of a month, maybe longer. I found my appetite just dropped, I didn't feel that it was a problem at the time, it was just lower. I'd been actively trying to lose weight with struggle over the years anyways but not had much look.
after this i found I had increasing bouts off nausea, at the time I considered it to be travel sickness because I have suffered that in the past.
As a home care worker (in their own homes) I get driven around from call to call. I usually ate within an hour or two of leaving for work (typically about 2pm). I'd also become somewhat sensitive to hot rooms, it makes the nausea worse to the point of I have to leave the room.
it got bad enough that i took a few days off work, and seemingly recovered, or so i thought. The next shift back to work I was at the first clients residence and the nausea came over me so strong to the point of having to leave the room, go to the bathroom, I came back and my colleague said to me you've not been right for weeks and your no good to me like this. and drove me home. and so I took 7 days of work again... it was like my accepting im ill just opened a flood gate of nausea, I got to the point of agony, stomach started hurting, like somebody pulled a dressing gown cord extremely tight around my upper abs, or like your stomach is being sucked in, but if you let it out the pain was outer worldly. it took me a few days to see the GP because I'd moved within the last year and the 2 options were both full unfortunately so I put it off, they wouldn't even see me as an emergency so the next day I went to A&E.
the doctor I spoke to after my explanation of the above simply said " so I believe you have gastritis you should research it, and you will need to eat plain foods". ordered stool sample and bloods ro be done (all clear apart from low iron) she prescribed me esomeprazole (proton pump) and left it at that.
over the next few days i still seemed to worsen to the pount of going pale, which apparently i had low iron, i went back to my GP who extended my prescription of proton pump and also gave me some folcate tablets to get my levels back up. this did seem to help to a degree but didn't seem to fix the issue. during that appointment I also asked for something for anxiety and stress to which she prescribed some beta blockers (I did have to enquire about that and push a little for the help). Finally she referred me for an ultrasound of which I've still not had any letter or contact about.
since then ive been working out what i can and cannot eat, and for the most part the answer seems to be nothing, id started with cuppa soups, can't eat them now. tried peanut butter on toast (suggestion from my sister a nurse) which I find to be 50/50, sometimes it goes down no problem, sometimes I can't even have it touch my lips. plain rice and air fried chicken seemed to do the trick for a while but as of recently no matter how much I want or need to eat, I'm just managing less and less to the point of maybe a fee spoonfuls at best. drinking hasn't been an issue, I have been having plenty of water so no problem there. But food is just becoming worrying scarce.
my symtoms at this point havent changed too much, im finding the abs tightness is easing off, still get very hot at times around my face neck shoulders, my back gets sensitive to touch during my hot flushes. it's usually worse in the AM and by the time I've taken tablets and taken 2 hours to eat a banana or whatever I try. the nausea usually eases off, but today I got to tea time and just, couldn't I just can't eat. barely a folk full was all I managed. since this began I've lost just over a stone and a half in weight which seems to have settled at 13 stone for the moment which is 2 pounds heavier than i was. At least its not going down still.
I was hoping having read this maybe somebody may offer some insight for what could help. the NHS service is honestly a joke, feel like I'm just being shunned off with take tablets and go kind of speeds

I know this post and thread is old, but I'd like to hear some updates. I'd like to hear if people got better and to know their success story to know how long it took.
I currently have Gastritis pretty bad. I have the gnawing pain with loss of appetite, bloating and fullness feeling. Everything I eat increases the nausea, bloating and discomfort.
I have only been eating very small amounts of chicken soup. My doctor has me taking Omeprazole for weeks now with little to no help. I am so worried now. I have hunger and a desire to eat, but when I do I get full with the smallest amounts of food. Then the little amount I eat hurts and makes me wish I had not. Its just so hard to believe that this is how Gastritis is.
I feel so down and its starting to make me feel as if I will never get better.
What has me so frustrated is that I have had bouts of Gastritis in the past and it got better with a 14 day course of Omeprazole, but this time around its well past 14 days and I am still not better. It would be nice to hear from someone on here.
Thanks

Hi mark, sorry to hear what you going through, can you give me an update on how you doing now? I had the same symptoms, it disappeared after 3/4 months for about 3 years and came back.

I am doing better now.... it was a long time before I saw relief. The pain and discomfort lasted for about 2 or 3 months. I lost a lot of weight.
My doctor has me taking Omeprazole long term to help keep the gastritis away. Once the pain and nausea went away I was able to reintroduce foods and I have since gained some weight back. The good news is there is relief, it was just slow and I was so sure it would never go away.

Have any of you mistakenly thought that your symptoms of gastritis is of stomach cancer? Because stomach cancer has very similar symptoms with gastritis.

To be honest- I was actually thinking that I had cancer.
But I am a person who usually goes to the worst case scenarios.
I was thinking the doctors were simply guessing and that cancer was taking over.
I had to remind myself to trust in the process and not simply expect the worst.

hiya
I feel your pain. I have erosive gastritis and struggle to eat . like you I have lost nearly two stone due to bloating and stomach discomfort. I went on ppi's and they made it worse, which makes me think I have low stomach acid not high, no doctors willing to listen. they just want me to up my dose but not investigate further. I am slowly going mad with it all
