I have been asthmatic for as long as I can remember and I am now 35 years old. For the last 15 years it has been well managed and I have only had to use Salbutamol every now and again - however the last 6 - 12 months I have become increasingly breathless - relying on my salbutamol inhaler at least 5 times a day.

I saw my GP and was put back onto becotide (brown inhaler!) and that is where I remained. I provided peak flow readings - approx 190 am and 230 pm - best recorded 250!

I have since changed doctors and have been to see the asthma nurse - I had to see her every 2-4 weeks for two months whilst my meds were changed but what a difference.

I have spent a month on Serevent and becotide and feel like a new person - peak flow now 380 am and 400 pm - best ever 470 today!!!

Seen the nurse again and now going to change to combo inhaler.

I am no longer breathless - I do not need to to have salbutamol n every pocket, glove compartment, hole. I have energy. I am not longer tired.

    HI there Charlotte,

I had been diagnosed with Asthma when I was young, and since becoming ill with arthritis conditions it had been a nightmare taking umpteen anti-inflammatories and other meds....... so I thought as I had breathing troubles with certain medication I was taking, or so I thought, anyway I went to the GP and after 23 years (I am 36) I had a lung capacity test and I have the lungs of a 34 year old!!!! It turns out I have acid reflux and no longer asthmatic, a shock but also a relief, now I am on meds for the Acid reflux not an inhaler, so much much better!!!! thankfully I had changed doctors surgeries or I had had inhalers I did not need!!!!

I hope this is of some use to people too

    Thank you Charlotte and SES,

That is really good information for people with Asthma or suspected Asthma. Get regular checks and make sure that you don't need a change of medication or that your condition is no longer there and you are taking medication you no longer need.

    Thank you both

Yeah Tess , it was a shock like I say, but also glad I got this checked, as how many people that are on meds that they do no long need them????

    Take care xx

SES, I would imagine quite a few. There a lot of people who once they are diagnosed and have the required inhalers, continue to use them without ever checking with the doctor to see if they still need to use them. More people than we think.

It's a good thing that you did and you will prob feel better for not taking them.

    HI there Tessa,

Well the Doc today had said that he will be taking my file home before he helps me any further, as I have just recently changed surgeries, so at least he is wanting to get to the bottom of my troubles......and so i am having blood tests done on Friday and then once they are back I am to see him once again and then he is going to discuss the next steps for my treatment..... I am so relieved that I have a doctor that is interested in me as an individual rather than choosing to treat me for something that I may not have!!!!!

    Kind Regards

SES, I am so pleased that you have found a doctor who is treating you as a person and taking an interest in your condition. Sounds like he will do his best to help you.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the blood tests give you some answers then you can get the appropriate treatment.

    Take care

    Hi SES.

It's no fun when your doctor doesn't take the patient interest he should. It sounds like yours is going to leave no stone unturned to find out what is happening.

It also makes you feel that you are not going it alone but are part of a team working together to get a result.

Not looking forward to the weekend weather they have forecast.

    Love Tessa

SES, you are definitely one organized lady. I have made a start, but not getting out makes it a bit more difficult, as I have to ask people to pick stuff up for me as and when they go out. Thank goodness for the internet.

Congratulations on your husbands lottery win. Came just at the right time.

Late getting started this morning. Never mind it is Saturday.

What's the weather like where you are. It is quite bright and sunny here, but very cold.

Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you on Thursday, that you get some answers.

    Enjoy the weekend;

    Love Tessa

    Hi Tessa,

I have had flu and so therefore felt like cr*p and so I haven't been bothered doing anything........

Yeah the weather was wet and windy over the weekend and today was glorious but very nippy, my little boy has had the same as me and so as we are both out of sorts we have been cuddling up to each other. smile

I cannot go shopping on my own due to being unable to carry things, so i always have someone with me, but once I have done this chore I sufer days later due to the pain in my hip and knees, so I do not get the joy of shopping as I did do before I got the OA and fibro

Thanks for your kind words, I do not predict anything will show up, as I feel I am gonna continue suffering and then one day I will get the answer probably in ten years time or something!!!! anyway what you do not know will not worry you eh????

How have you been today then? is the cold weather effecting you? I am at my worse time of year  I hope you are having a good day xxxxxx

Gentle hugs and thanks again xx

SES sorry you have both had the flu, it takes awhile to get over that, but you did have each other for company.

My whole family are down with this throat and cough thingy (except my Husband) My two grown up daughters, who each have a daughter, live with us. So you can imagine how all this coughing sounds.

Yes, this is my worst time of the year. I am only just starting to go out again after three years, but not in the winter. Breathing the cold air hurts my lungs and makes me cough. I wrap a scarf around my mouth and nose which warms the air, but also restricts the amount of air I am able to breathe.

Also, there are more germs around to catch. As it happens I didn't have to go out this time. I had my hairdresser come and she had an atrocious cough. Well that was it.

I really hope you don't turn out to be one of those people who have to wait years to get a correct diagnosis. It's no fun being ill.

Hope you and your son feel better soon.

    Hi Tessa,

Well I am off to the doctors on Thursday as I had five blood samples last week and so I will see what happens from there...... The doctor took my file home to read up on my notes, as I had just changed suregeries and he wanted to get a background of my problems, how good is that...... finally someone wanted to know about me!!!! Previous doctors at old surgery I got the impression they forgot about my problems and just seemed to fob me off so this is a kind of relief someone is finally interested on ME....... Anyway how are you Tessa? Staying in the house for three years must have been awful for yourself xxxx my father in law has COPD do you have a related illness? Sorry being ignorant and not asked previously  This weather would not be good for you then with all the bugs going around especially when the weather keeps changing so bugs can multiply  I wont have the flu jab though as four years ago I had it and I was unable to get out of the bed......... good thing was I give up smoking but four years later I weigh heavier  anyway my hubby is happy the way I am and if the weight comes off then it will do, I am not getting stressed over it!!!!!

I do hope you have a good night sleep, gentle hugs xxxxx
