Getting hip surgery abroad

Hi Guys,

I have long waiting times here in London and I am considering travelling to Turkey/India for my hip surgery. Does anyone have any experience with exploring/getitng it abroad. There is a ton of information online but nothing reliable. It would be great to know of some reliable service if you guys know any.

    Hi John,

How long is a long wait in London? Are you on a waitign list, or are there potential complecations to your parsonal HR needs that are causing the long wait?

I had my op done in London. I saw consultant in August 2015 and an appointment date for November of same year. After initial test's I couldnt do that date but when I was ready, a new date became available for Feb this year. I personally would stay home to have this kind of surgery.

You can however checke out Youtube for their vids on doing THR. I had seen one from India so they are there to watch and ask q's.

3  months. yep. Thanks alot for the suggestion to watch the youtube vid. Do you maybe have a link for one? I am also not sure about the surgeon competence so it would be great to talk to one in person.

If you put in Total Hip Rep...... in India or something similar into the search engine on YTube thay will come up. I cannot post a like or mods will cease the post to examine it first.

Hmmm. Would think carefully about that John, regardless of the quality of surgeons... you aren't supposed to do a long haul flight for 90 days after the op, so you'd need to be prepared for a long stay. When you say you've got a long waiting time if you do it in London, how long are you talking about? I'm in London and, luckily, waiting times really weren't too long... Cheers, Mark

I completely Agree Mark. I was thinking more Germany though rather than a developing country.

Personally speaking John there is absolutely no way I could recommend you having a hip replacement abroad. For one there is an issue of how you are going to get home. I am four months post op, and don't think I could have managed a long haul flight at six or even eight weeks, quite apart from the blood clotting risks (we are on blood thinners for six weeks) the sheer pain and discomfort of travelling after a full and total hip replacement would be substantial.

If you are thinking of paying for one overseas, why not have a private replacement here where the wait time is zero?

I would also be concerned about the medical training/background of using surgeons you can not check or do not know. It is a big operation and not one that you can risk going badly.

The logistics of staying in another country until you are well enough to endure the journey home needs thinking through - and also support and help post op etc. What happens if something goes wrong? Are there skilled revision surgeons in the country...

If you live in the UK, then I would wait or pay, I don't think I would ever consider having such major surgery overseas, but that is just my view.

I was thinking more Germany and not a developing country but thannks for all the points to watch out for. The doctors there are similar to competence in the UK and its about 30% cheaper though language maybe a bit of an issue.

PS are you on the cancellation list? Wait times in London are not that long. Maybe you need help with pain relief in the meantime?

Ive been on pain relief but another 3 months of that would be too much to handle.

Please don't do it John - for all the reasons people have mentioned here. For me the post op care would be a primary reason for staying local. I would persevere and hopefully the waiting times will come down. All the best, Jeremy

Appreciate your concern Jeremy. Do you even think its a bad idea to get it in Germany? 20%-30%  cheaper and similar quality

I do John. Absolutely. If this was teeth whitening I would say go ahead and spend the savings in a beer festival, or something! But hip op is serious stuff. I wouldn't take any risks with all things connected with the return journey that can go wrong, including delays, cancellations, arriving at a different airport to your chosen one etc etc etc. Then, the follow ups. Would you want to trek back to Germany, and back again each time? Would it be worth asking a UK private hospital if they would consider a discount of say 20%, and that you would be prepared to have the operation at a date of their choosing in the near future? I am sure one or two would consider giving a discount. I myself don't have an experience of this but I know someone who looked into it (he found a hospital [S**** B*****] which was making the right noises subject to patients accepting their proposed dates, but my friend wanted a quicker op; he didn't pursue the possibility of a discount and had the operation at the time of his choosing. Worth calling them, you can see the full list via the link Mark sent this morning. Try it, what have you got to loose! Good luck, Jeremy
