Getting really nervous

Hi all,

Only five days to go for colonoscopy, I'm getting so nervous and anxious, imagining all sorts in my head even though I'm trying to stay positive, I suppose if the pain a nd nausea would ease I might feel less frightened, thanks for all your support along the way, hoping for a good result on Thursday

I personally go for sedation... my GI Specialist is great!  The first one I didn't put the last 3 I have and it's been good all around.  I get anxious and nervous too and it's completely normal if you're feeling ummm 'poopy' and your mind will get the best of you.  Stay positive as you'd get your answers k!!!!  I've got not only Div but UC (from food poisoning) with a good dose of IBS sooooooooo... they'll get to the bottom of it all! (no pun intended!)

    Take care

Tks for your kind words it's the result I'm afraid of, I usually get sedation too, sounds like you have a lot going on, hope you find some relief soon

When I was diagnosed with UC I was handed a fistful of pills and told to take them... it was the day before our trip of a lifetime and while at the hotel the night before flying, I was in absolute tears from the pain.  I ended up having a reaction to the medication and getting worse... but then as the UC is... (and the div), I got better.. took 11 months... one big div attack during everything...  I really watch what I eat and I can tell when I've eaten something I shouldn't have... yes.. it is the results that scare me the most.... last one where I was scared well not quite poopless as I'd thought it'd flared again and was generally unwell was just a mild case of proctitis and the bad niggly left hand side bit was nothing to worry about... now all the drugs have become less and less - scaled back.  Sometimes it can feel worse than what it is!!!  I really thought the worst and then wham.. it wasn't!!!

I'll defo keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing to worry about!!!!!!

Sedation is great isn't it! (Smile!)...

      Take care

Sedation? Don’t they sedate you during a colonoscopy anyways, is there diff sedation types? I’m to have mine next Tuesday so nervous. For IBS and all the other crap you are dealing with what is your diet? I’m afraid to eat anything, I’m waiting on stool tests for Candida, IBS, parasites, SUDD. What’s UC? I have had 2 Cat Scan s and blood work, Endoscopy this month due to the discomfort, diarrhea, abdomen burning, lower back pain and just feeling like pooooo. But all is normal just have diverticulosis. So confusing and scary. I keep a food journal but been told to do to many diff diets, makes me afraid to eat anything. Any advice on foods IBS

      Thanks

I’ve done so much internet research and it’s all contradicting and want you to buy their products, which I have but nothing really works. So I have also found for me being on internet, has made my anxiety/panic worse. And more afraid to eat anything. I’ve lost 35 lbs in 4 months. So any advice on supplements, foods, I know everyone is diff, but I’ll try anything at this point. I love this forum so much good advice from those who are going through this awful life changing disease. Thanks.

Hi Vickie... yes.. I do understand about the supplements and I've tried a few and nope.. nothing really worked or seemed to work (except for nicotine patches for the pain)... particularly when I was really really bad. (the worst is usually the left him)  I've started the 'salmon oil' and I think... only think that it's working but can't be certain or if it's a combination of things.  I am on senna and then laxido at night for everything.... a cocktail so I don't get bunged up as I know that causes a lot of problems.  With diet.. when I was a kid I did have a mild wheat allergy so I've gone pretty much gluten free.  Occasionally I succumb to a McBurger but I do notice when I do.  I can do dairy... but not hard cheese.. that causes problems and I'm backed up to Sunday.  (That's ok.. cuz I can eat butter like cheese anyways! Grin!).... I do tend to stay away from lentils (which I like) onions (I use peppers instead) and raisins which never agreed with my anyways... I will do a tiny bit of hummus but as a rule stay away from chickpeas now too which I used to really like... all those things can be kind of well.. gassy. (And with the senna and laxido I don't need any of that!!! And I can only blame the dog so many times if I do have a bit of onion or....!)

Last time I got really bad - they weren't sure if it was a combo of a flare and being backed up.... or

I get my sedation for the scope right from the get go... my GI is so good that he knocks me out pretty quick and I wake up in recovery and it's all done....  I'm not sure if there are different types but he just knows the right dose for me so I have no idea what's going on.

The burn can be stress too... I know when I'm stressed, I burn like the dickens and I've got to de-stress.  I don't think we know how much we internalise things literally when we're stressed.

Deep breathes!  It will be all ok!!!  You'll find the right combo for you when it comes to eating.  I always went for scrambled eggs.. cooked vegis.. GF bread.. all easy things... I've long since given up on 'diets' too as the variations seems to be as scrambled as my eggs.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow!  All will be ok k!

      Take care

Thank you for great advice, nicotine patches? For smoking? Cuz yes I smoke and am trying hard to quit.
    • Posted

Hi Vickie... good luck with today!!!!!  Nope... apparently there is research that it's good for UC though there is a thread on the link between smoking and UC... (though I also have severe DD too)... it helps apparently with the pain and it did seem to work.  Quitting is NOT easy.  I'm still on the gum after about 10 years plus when I need it too....

I noticed you said popcorn too.  That's a no no as well for me too.  I even gave my popcorn maker away. And really spicey foods too though I do do a mild spice.... When I was really bad the dietitian handed me a leaflet on IBS and said eat that way.... at that time I was so bunged up it made things worse... than they thought with research that the elimination and low fodmap diet was the way to go (but in research there is a variety of nono foods but it seems to be different between different ones)...there is an ap for that you can download to check stuff... let's just say that there was no enjoyment at all in that and hubby said I was a total bear as I'd already determined what made me worse but I did give it a go for 8 weeks as I'd been pretty adept in what causes me major problems.  If it weren't for the laxatives, I'd probably have a worse time of finding what I could eat.  At one point I was being weaned off them but the IBS took centre stage which caused more problems with the DD and UC.  Last dietitian appointment - (with a UC specialist one)... they said I seemed to be doing the 'right' thing and just discharged me.  I am now doing SW but have modified it somewhat cuz the drugs caused me to gain over 20 lbs at the start and I really was a fluffe ball of fat! :-)  Carrots are supposed to be good carbs but not raw as they can cause me problems and -yuk- chicken and in some respects the fodmap did solidify what I already knew.  It is possible to check out the fodmap diet and kind of change it to your likes and dislikes and go from there.

Take care!  And thinking of you today!

Thank you, what a tough journey you have been on, my heart goes out to you. My stool samples came in yesreday and all is normalI will know more after my colonoscopy today. And GI is having me see new dietitian and doing the SIBO test also. I’m going to start diet over cince I just had do fast again and clean bowels. Go by low FodMat diet/ IBS . See how it goes. I’m quite tired of potatoes and pancakes, carrots, cream of wheat.  Well thank you for some good advice. Hugs

Same as you.. mine were all normal too... good luck with the diet.  The gluten free did me the world of good.  Ok... I was bad.. I had a bacon sandwich on regular bread today and I really noticed it.  I was into the paracetemol... kind of like I think tylenol...  SW is slimming world... kind of like weight watchers... as I've always battled that earthy feeling and being somewhat round in my centre bits.  Only I could gain that much weight when most people lose weight but anyhoo.. onwards and upwards to a good result on the scope and you finally get some answers!

      Take care k!!

Thank you 🙏 Colonoscopy results- removal of 6 polyps and scrape of colon sent to biopsy. Have Severe Diverticulosis (3 spots) , ugh. So put on Low FodMat diet along with a cocktail of Psyllium mucilloid(Metamucil)with Miller’s wheat bran for fiber, till I see their dietitian. GI said to do fiber to stay regular take vitamins Calcium, D, probiotics/prebiotic to avoid further flare up, this all will help with IBS also. And less stress, which is hard for me cuz I deal with bad Anxiety. My stool labs for parasites/food poising/ salmonella came back normal so just waiting on the Candida of the gut tests, And having test done for SIBO and IBS. So overwhelmed but going to stay positive, and just eat and keep a good food journal. Can’t afford to lose anymore weight. Thank you for your support and good suggestions 🌺🤗

Hi vickie so glad your trying to stay positive! I will have to Google low food mat diet I also take calcium vitamin D all in one pill did the colonoscopy cause more pain I'm suppose to do it in August I do Metamucil every other day I stopped taking probiotics maybe I will start again I walked into a restaurant yesterday looked at the menu and had to walk out 😣there was nothing I felt was safe to eat I came home and ate chicken again Stay strong you are now getting answers 💜

I was sore yesterday and some tenderness soarnesss today. Laying around with heating pad and Xanax and Tylenol. I think it’s more nerves than anything. My GI Dr said the pain in Lower back, buttocks and legs are due to malnourished, so I just need to start eating. And add fiber and exercise more. Sound funny but kinda afraid to have a poo. Hoping it won’t hurt. After they cleaned me out I hope to feel better with proper diet, and less anxiety. Hugs. 🌺

It was better than I thought, the prep. Procedure was not that bad the GI team was really good. It was more of my anxiety than anything. Results- had 6 polyps removed and a scape of colon sent for biopsy, have severe diverticulosis in sigmoid colon (3 spots) ugh. With diverticula spasms. Today I’m soar and tender. So just laying around with heating pad and Xanax, Tylenol. So worried about diet still. But trying to stay possitive and not let anxiety take over. Hugs

Hi Vickie... I'm so glad you got through it and they got the polyps removed.  That's where mine is worst too.  I've got what's called pseudo-polyps which is kind of like they look like polyps but they aren't.. it's just scar tissue.  Your innards will settle down... takes a bit but it will settle!!! Yes.. the cocktail... I call it my 'drinkypoo!'... as mine is the laxido drink at night along with the senna in the morning.  Yes... I forgot to mention along with the salmon oil, I do take a high calcium with vit D added... can't do those chewable calciums they gave me.. it's like chewing chalk and like a lil' kid, I would do anything to avoid taking them so this is more palatable.. just swallowing it.  Another thing might be once you're good... don't overload your tummy when you eat... that's when I get issues too with all that's going on!!!

Take care and onwards and upwards!!!!!!!!cool

It can take time to get over a colonscopy, from the pounding your insides took from both the prep and procedure.  I think the tenderness and soreness is to be expected as they not only removed polyps but did a scrape of your insides and it will take time to heal (I bit my tongue a week ago and it still stings!!)  As for the fibre, don't overdo it, and aim for soluble fibre rather than insoluble.  A bowl of All Bran is very scratchy on tender insides.  You get lots of soluble fibre in well cooked veggies, like soups and purees.

Thank you for wonderful advice. I will need to find a way to handle the anxiety and start eating healthy. 🤗🌺

    • Posted

Thank you 🙏 I think I could handle all this if I had not also developed bad anxiety and panic attacks. I just need to find a way to calm my mind , acceptance of my disease and start eating healthy diet and not be so 😱 of having a flare up. 🌺 I am not a good cook so love this forum to get ideas on what to eat and need recipes please. Smoothies and croc pot ideas. For I wear dentures and it’s hard to chew food properly to digest. Thank you for all your good advice and support 🤗🤗🤗🌸🌸

cool Totally understand... when I get anxious or stressed, I can feel my innards starting to burn.  Warmish bubble bath with 'mood' lighting and music can help too.. finding that fun me time... whatever you like to do that takes your mind off things as well.  I do loads of crafts.. sounds silly but even something like that works... don't even have to be good at it - I'm sure hubby wonders what I'm up to when I get those power tools out - or even puzzles or... it's all about the 'me time' that takes you away from it all!!!! Felina is right too... good solubles like cooked mashed carrots etc... checking out the fodmap and possibly that ap... and possibly GF too as often as you can.  (I had a wheat sensitivity and despite the dairy sensitivity I have, it's only hard cheese I've sussed out as a big problem) I must admit, that in the past year, the amount of GF foods coming onto the market is insane!!!  The bread has come a long long way too from the revolting stuff I first tried and some of the pasta isn't half bad... the pea based one I tried was an absolute disaster tho.. it looked like a 'frog that'd been blended!'....  scrambled eggs... and just re-introduce foods one at a time and you'll get a good idea of what works and what isn't working and what may work further down the line....

Vickie you know how your doc said lower back pain and leg pain is not a part of diverticulitis mine said the same thing that's when she said malnutrition of course without any testing Well so many people on this forum suffer from these same symptoms I totally believe it is related to DD not enough research on our condition Good luck with your shopping I hope things improve for all of us who have recently been diagnosed And thank you for the people whom have had DD for awhile and give us advice 😊

I so have to agree, more research should be done on this. Do you have Diverticulosis right now or a flare up? I’m so afraid of having a flare up again. Colonoscopy showed 3 spots of Diverticulosis in sigmoid. Diet and fiber and de stressing all important to avoid flare up. So gotta really figure out my diet and not be so afraid to eat. Any advice or recipes would be great. Smoothies, croc pot. It sucks I cannot do eggs or dairy. I can handle gluten just fine. Im not good in kitchen, not like I use to be. This whole change in lifestyle is a big challenge for me. And the anxiety that came along with it. Sucks this disease! Well hope you are feeling better praying for you daily. 🙏

If you come up with recipes please share I have always been meat and potatoe gal not a creative cook 💡

Oh wow you poor lady, sure pray you have not got no more. pray that don’t happen to me. But thanks for the heads up. I have a steamer so I steam my veggies. (Asparagus, carrots, potatoes) and I cook my chicken and fish on stovetop in olive oil. With spinach. I’m going to try smoothies for my fruit and almond milk. And I do cream of wheat, oatmeal or pancakes for breakfast and a slice of Toast, and I eat an avocado daily. If I don’t feel like cooking and that’s a lot lately I buy pink salmon in package by  “chicken of the sea” eat with crackers or on a piece of bread. Or bone beef broth. I haven’t tried creamy soups or sauces yet. I love Alfredo. Miss it. And I’m ok with pasta or rice. I’m ok with gluten also. Just no dairy or eggs. Which sucks. I will definitely talk to my dietitian and soon as all biopsy and labs come back my GI and PC will have a better idea on how to treat me. I’m so sick of being sick. Hugs and hope your days are good days. 🙏🤗

I relax with a monthly visit to my local beautician where I have various treatments which relax me so much I fall asleep.  But there are other things like yoga, gentle exercise which are cheaper!

I find soup so easy to make, then I blend with a stick blender.  One squash, peeled and chopped, one large sweet potato peeled and chopped, (or cheat and buy the pre-prepared packs), one large onion peeled and chopped, 2 red peppers, blanched, skinned and de-seeded, 1.5 litres stock, 2 teaspoons curry powder to taste.  Chuck in a large pan and simmer for 30 minutes.  Add 400gm can light coconut milk, simmer for further 10 minutes.  Cool, blend and freeze (makes about 12 servings).

Or:  I large potato peeled and chopped, 3 sticks celery chopped, I large onion peeled and chopped, 1 yellow and 1 green pepper blanched de-seeded and chopped, 1.5 litres stock.  Simmer for 20 minutes, then add 1 400gm can butter beans, 200 gm sweetcorn, sage to taste and 500ml skimmed milk.  Simmer for a further 5 minutes, then cool.  Can be fully or partially blended.

Hi Ellen.... it's re-introducing things one at a time in some respects and if it bothers you stop it and then try it again at a later date.  That's how I manage it.  It could be something else in the soup too... some people can't tolerate onions if they were in there... I eat it very rarely and can't remember when I last had it... and when you're not feeling well, it might be that you can't tolerate it at that point in time.... sometimes I will eat something that I know could potentially cause me a problem.. like carrot sticks and hummus and it doesn't bother me and the next time I eat it, it does.... it sometimes just doesn't seem to make sense sad but then I'll avoid it and then will try it again later because I just like it and want to see if I can eat it again....

    • Posted

Hmmm... bananas, white rice, white pasta... if you can tolerate tomatoes... maybe a passata (It's like purreed tomatoes without the seeds) with veg and chicken you can tolerate... I like adding a bit of all spice to my sauce as it gives it an intense flavour and possibly a few herbs if you know you can tolerate those on your chicken or basil... (garlic can be tricky but if you know you can eat it, I get the garlic from the Asian cookshops which is all mashed up.  Throw the chicken into the pan.. then the vegis you know you can eat and put over pasta.  Not sure about the salmon.. I tend to stick away from fresh fish cuz that's how the UC side of things started... food poisoning from fish... if I cook it at home, I have to 'nuke' the fish for that extra bit of 'let's make sure it's cooked to oblivion' look.  I do do canned crab and canned tuna... and also cray fish cuz lobster is way out of my price league... that's nice if it's been cooked but then fried up a bit with a slice of bread (GF or not GF!).... then you can do chicken meatballs or a minced chicken burger on a non stick grill with vegis you can tolerate grated into it with a slice of avacado on the top... or...... rather than sticking to just the same thing.  I love my food but get bored if it's the same so if I know I can tolerate something, I just change it a bit to make it even 'look' different...wink

Fluffe you are awesome thanks for the great ideas !

cool  You're welcome.   Mild peppers without a seeds is supposed to be a good go to too if you can tolerate them as onions can be quite gassy. You mentioned a pamper session too.. that's a fab idea.  I get a massage every four weeks... though if you want to slip into oblivion... a hot stone massage is just to die for!!! I've not been able to get them since i moved here but the place I used to live.. well on a Friday stressed from work driving to the massage... well after the massage if it took a half hour to get out of the place, I couldn't care less.  I was in heaven!!!

Take care and have a great weekend!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, wonderful ideas, I am quite sick of same ole food daily. I just have a hard time cuz it as been almost 4 months now dealing with this. And I was not to happy with colonoscopy results scares the crap out of me. So just trying to find a way to de stress and I think the anxiety has really gotten the best of me. And eat healthy. I’m still bloated and gassy today and a bit tender with spasms. From colonoscopy Hope it will pass soon. My left side hip, buttocks and leg pain was horrible yesterday. Did you ever take Bentyl? Know if it works ? Anyways again thank you for all your kind words and ideas. 🌺🌸

Hi Kate, how are you feeling? Are you still in discomfort or pain, bloating, gas, from colonoscopy? I am man it’s driving me crazy. They gave me Bentyl for spasms. I just lay here with heating pad, Tylenol and Xanax. I took a walk earlier but caused leg pain. Hope your feeling better. Hugs🤗🌸🌺

      Hi vickie,

I was in a obit if discomfort for a few hours after the colonoscop,y, lots of wind, but a lot of the pain I had previously is gone thank god, this is same as what happened me after last time, its like when they clean out colon things settle down ag again, I'm not shuffling along trying to walk, I don't feel as weak, I hope and pray the pains don't come back, hope you get a lot of relief soon, when are you back to your doctor?

    • Posted

Sorry Vickie... I don't know what that is...  so ummmm... nope don't think I've ever taken it.  You will be bloated and tender.  They blow air in so the air needs to come out again.  It's usually my left side that is the worst down by my hip... and sometimes by the right but that's the UC side of things that will cause that... and yes totally agree.. scares the crap out of me too with the what ifs....

Yes... I totally hate the same old same old with food.  I can't stand plain chicken but throw avacado on the top of it and well... I don't mind it too badly, plain chicken soup, most fish but I can do the eggs and dairy...  so changing things around is important.  You can even think about a turkey burger too as the flavour is different.  Hubby likes turkey... I look at it like chicken.  I love all spice in pasta dishes.  If you can also do lemon and paprika... that goes nicely on chicken as well... and if you can do garlic it adds a teeny bit more flavour... or you can put the chicken into cooked rice and make a mild fried rice with the vegis you can eat that are precooked...  there's a thing called coconut aminos that is like soya sauce but if you can manage the soya sauce, use the dark as you need very very little... or....

Have a great weekend and hope by Monday, it's all settling for you!!

      Take care!!!

Thank you Fluffe, I’m feeling a little better today, going to get out of house , do some yard work. See how that goes. Thank you for food ideas. Just need to get out of my head and not be afraid to eat. It’s hard cuz I was a junk food, eat out, soda, coffee, popcorn candy on the go lady, now I’m down 40 lbs and trying to eat and cook healthy what a struggle. Do you do smoothies? Well thank you for the food ideas. Hope your weekend is a great one! 🤗

Hi Ellen, I’m so glad you are having better days, and getting colonoscopy sooner. Scary yes but the sooner you have results the better. I’m doing a little better today. All my stool labs came back normal so no Candida or other bugs in gut, So now I go have SIBO test in a week, if they rule that out then it’s assumed I have IBS. Dr. Says there is not a test for IBS. Weird. And they say anxiety can cause a lot of tummy issues. Sucks for me. Gotta find a way to de stress. Well You have a good weekend, keep in touch. 🙏🌺🌸
