Getting uncemented hip replacementH how much can I weight bear in the first few weeks

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi, I'm looking foward to THR ceramic and plastic uncemented and wondered how much weight one can put on the new hip in the first few weeks. I know I will have to be careful in the first few weeks but have this worry, probably groundless, that if I put too much weight on the new hip, too soon, I might push it further down the femur.

Has anyone any views on this.

Thanks

I think you will be told you can put all your weight on it, though in practice you may use crutches for a while. But every case is different. I'm sure the team at the hospital will explain evereything to you, show you how to use crutches up and down stairs etc.

Most of us were told not to bend the hip more than 90 degrees for 6 weeks, Not to twist the hip. As a result you will probably be told to use an toilet seat raiser and modify your chairs so you can get in and our without breaking the 90 deg rule.

But the odd person is given no restrictions at all.

    Hope it all goes well

for for most people it is the next day with a walker or crutches. Restrictions such as the 90 degree  rule will apply

I had a non cemented hip and had full weight bearing immediately after my op. I must admit I did not use crutches after I got home as I was such rubbish with them and just furniture surfed, which I am sure is not recommended.

    Thanks for all the replies,

I Think I will try not to overload the new hip for a few weeks regardless. Will keep folks updated after the op in a few weeks.

      Dear Breeze

Having had a new hip twenty years ago and a revision if it,a few months ago, both very successful may I offer a couple of suggestions to speed your recovery back to normality.

Firstly your surgeons ability is key. You will be able to be fully weight bearing from the start but most likely your muscles will feel unable to support you without crutches. Please use two crutches until you are able to walk strongly and with a good gait and without limping without them.Doing the exercises is really important for most people. I did not need a physio but lots of walking is what is needed.

      Best of luck, Richard

It all depends on your existing condition. I was weight bearing from day 1 after the operation, but some people with extra complications are advised not to weight bear.  I was climbing stairs on day 3, and walking out of the hospital on day 4.  As long as you are in reasonable health, you should be able to bear weight almost immediately, but the 90 degree rule applied for 6 months (see 'risk' graph from my website).

    Best wishes

    Richard and Rocketman,

Thanks for the advice. Of course hip dislocation is the major worry for most people

so will be careful. I will be relieved to be past the first two weeks and have reasonable leg

    strength so fingers crossed.

I’m at 9 months and still get a bit sore from lifting my little fat 20 lb. poodle!  Just take it slow and easy!  I’m doing life now housework flowerbeds and fishing.  Feeling great!  Best thing I ever did for myself!  Make sure to do the exercises I still do!  They will make your leg and hip stronger!

    Hi

I had cementless and I came back from theatre at 5pm and was got out of bed at 6am on walker and then later on crutches. I wasn't told anything about not weight bearing. In fact I was told to walk walk and then walk. So long as you use walker/cruthe you will be fine. You find yourself automatically putting your weight onto the aid. As you progress in next few weeks you find you're not putting so much weight onto aid.

As for the stem falling further into femur........they have to hammer the stem right in which is one of the reasons for thigh pain after op. There is no way it can go further on its own.

      Hi Sandra,

Thanks for your input. I'm looking forward to not walking without a limp, it will be the first time for many years. I too have booked a trip to Spain to get some swimming and sun. I've booked it for just over 8 weeks after the op so hope I will be ok and like you I will book assistance at the airport. I've booked a seat with extra leg room as well.

Airport assistance was brilliant. You may of already been told but due to higher risk of DVT flying after op make sure you drink plenty....BUT no alcohol !!!!! and whilst on flight flex your feet and do a walk movement often. Also during flight make sure you get up every couple of hours and walk to loo.

      You'll have a brilliant time.

Hi Tony, have you talked to your surgeon about flying so soon? I was told I would have to wait three months.

Hi Tony, you may find that swimming is a bit of an effort at 8 weeks. I went swimming at about that time, and my hip wasn’t particularly keen! (Though that’s probably because I only do breaststroke!) Now I swim a kilometre a couple of days a week at our local lido. Very exhilarating in this chilly weather! Good luck with it all, Judith

I think the standard advice is 6 weeks for short haul and 12 weeks for long haul flights.
