Getting uncemented hip replacementH how much can I weight bear in the first few weeks

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi, I'm looking foward to THR ceramic and plastic uncemented and wondered how much weight one can put on the new hip in the first few weeks. I know I will have to be careful in the first few weeks but have this worry, probably groundless, that if I put too much weight on the new hip, too soon, I might push it further down the femur.

Has anyone any views on this.

Thanks

You need to put your weight on the new hip to get your balance right. I had been favouring the other hip for so long it felt really odd to be able to stand properly without pain. It does feel a bit off to begin with but as you do your exercises any swelling around the wound eases off and the muscles get stronger helping your balance. I found the Pilates exercise where you lean forward and back and then find your centre. Then lean side to side to find your centre again so you stand really straight helped a lot. The first few weeks I had to work through the tenderness in the hip to keep straight especially while doing the squatting exercise but now at almost 8 weeks post op all feels normal and balanced. Still feels a bit stiff when I stand after sitting too long but a walk sorts it out. Good luck with your op

    Thank for the recent posts.

No, I didn't ask my consultant but will after the op. I'm raring at the bit to get it done

and after recuperating for 2 months I will be ready for some sun, if I cant swim or it

hurts It's no great shakes not to swim for a few weeks longer. I do the front crawl and love to swim doing the back stroke so they shouldn't be too stressful on the new joint. I could never master the breast stroke leg kick and wonder if when I've had the other leg done will I be able to perform a leg kick.

The stiffness after sitting for long periods seems to be a commom problem

so have made a note of that.

I've packed my bag ready so it's going to be a long wait until next week but got a lot to do

    so should pass by quickly.
