Getting worried now ...

So it's been 5 months and not had one pain free day since. For the last week it seems to be getting worse . From day one I was in incredible pain and the surgeon seemed surprised . Wakes me every single night early hours morning with a deep nagging ache frontal thigh . Groin hurts, scar area very tender, all the muscles around scar are like concrete. Shoe insert done nothing at all. Hurts on getting up and getting into car very painful . I just want one blessed day where I don't feel the damn thing . I feel

Crippled . Ringing the surgeons secretary tomorrow to see when my

March appt is. Last time I told him it hurt he x rayed it and said it was perfect .

What is the next step hipsters? Do I ask for an MRI and will that show muscle damage ? Surgeon conceded the x Ray would not show that . I feel half my life slipping away and today just laying on bed trying to rest it sucking on co codamol and good for nothing . Think I will get my crutch out of the shed after too . I don't feel well today ... sorry to be such a negative I wish I could share in the positives but this seems to be going pear shaped . Cannot take any more time off work as was off for three months . Doctors don't want to know just dish out painkillers ...😣😣😢😢

I think that, in your place, I would ask for a second opinion. Can you ask them to refer you to the Royal National Orthopeadic Hospital at Stanmore. You have to get to the bottom of this and you need a heavyweight medical opinion.

It's where I am now - they can do miracles.  My new surgeon (Mr Carrington) says he'll have to cut the titanium to get out my crooked implant !    I was urged to go there by a friend on the advice of her sister who is a doctor, she says they are the best.

Hi Hazel, sorry to hear of your problems. I've had a long term situation following a fall in 2010 and 7 surgeries that followed, 3 of which were done incorrectly! [fortunately one of the surgeons had now been taken off he's private practice and is under investigation by the police!] But seeing that you are in the UK, was wondering where you live. I've now been referred to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and if your not nearby they have a Multi disiplinerary group that looks at complex cases referred from anywhere, headed by Prof Alister Hart. They may be able to help. Good luck   PatsyX

Yes Royal National Orthopedic hospital is probably the best place in the UK. They deal with all sorts of difficult cases. Lots of expertise all in one place.

Hi Hazel, how much physical therapy did you do after your surgery?  This should be started at the hospital before you go home, the should continue for several more weeks until your hip is stable again.  Without the stability, you will be in a lot of pain and will be at risk of other complications.  Try applying ice each day to the area that hurts.  This will reduce inflamation and ease the pain.

      Hi Kimberely

I had two sessions with a physio who never actually touched me ..just said we want you off those crutches and that was just 3 weeks after the op.Needless to say I wasnt off in 3 weeks.! Then I attended a hip class wherein a physio shows you exercises to do ...again they never touch or examine the leg...and after 6 weeks of that you are signed off.It was this 2 nd physio who actually called the leg length difference and told me to re contact the surgeon. He said wait till march..I said no way so he saw me late december and I am seeing him again, on my insistence, in a week. He said I WANT to know your in pain.,..but he doesnt really! I try to walk half hour  a day and do leg raises for the groin but not really sure what else I should be doing as nobody ssaid anything !

Hazel, it doesn't sound as though you are getting the proper care post surgery.  Physical Therapy is a must because the muscles and surrounding the hip have been stretched during the surgery.  If you don't do the proper exercises to tighten everything back up, it can lead to pain in the legs, hip, groin and lower back.  Go online and type in 'exercises after total hip replacement'.  There are several websites that show you how to tighten everything back up.  It's better to have a professional show you to make sure that you are positioned correctly when doing the exercises, but if you don't have access to PT sessions, then you can teach yourself.  Also, go on to YOU TUBE and type in the same thing.  They will have videos of how to do the exercises.  You don't have to do a lot each day, but you should be doing at least 15-20 minutes to help strengthen that hip back up.

Remember to apply an ice pack after each workout or as needed for pain.  You'll be amazed how much that will help.

Very few people get any sort of PT after leaving hospital in the UK. I was told at my 10 weeks outpatient appointment that I needed physio and haven't heard a thing since ! I started going to see my own physio in Jan and am paying for it myself ! 👣

I really hate to hear that.  I was born in Oxfordshire and then moved to Cambridgeshire until I was 25.  I have since lived in the US where I had my FHR surgery at the age of 49.  The orthopedic surgeons are big on PT here.  There has been a lot of research over the years and they found that it is a must for a healthy and strong recovery.  You would think that the National Health would rather pay for a few PT sessions to prevent ongoing issues later on.  It really doesn't make sense to me.  You can however find a lot of information on the internet.  Used resistance bands which you can buy online and they don't cost that much.  They are wonderful for toning and strengthing after the surgery.  I'm 7 months post op right now and I still use them.  It's worth giving them a try.

    Hazel,

Have you gone thru physical therapy? If not maybe you need too, seems like you are still sore because your muscles are not getting streched out.  I'm not a doctor so I could be way off but it is something to look into.
