I'm 47 I've been ill for 3 months now. I thought it was the flu until it was confirmed I have GF that was 2 weeks ago. I've been to emergency 3 times now as it is effecting my breathing and swallowing. I have been taking prednisone for 3 days but it hasn't taken away the lumps in my throat or swallowing difficulties. I get terrified at night that I'm being choked. I can't take this anymore, it just won't get better. Any advice please? I pray everyday for God to heal me.

Hi, I am so sorry you are in so much pain and discomfort. You need to go back to emergency and explain the problems you are having, particularly on the breathing issue and how long you've had these symtoms for. You need to speak to a consultant or specialist. You need them to check the medication you are taking now, 3 months on is correct. Be prepared though for them to keep you in hospital and under observation. You need reassurance on the meds you are taking. Keep hydrated and eat a good healthy diet as you can. Ice cream or fruit ice lollies are good for the throat.

My son was very ill when he went into hospital, he had acute sinisitis, then they later found that he had tonsilitis, an ear infection, glandullar fever and a brain swelling. He hasn't completely recovered to be honest from the GF and Cerebellitis. The GF attacked his immunue system and has affected his coordination and his speech. They were not sure if the virus was bacteria or viral and after treating him with both the first week and then having a lumbar puncture to determine that it was in fact a virus. He has anger management issues too now. I am told this will all improve (not go completely), but it has been weeks a few months since he has been hospital.

In short you will get better, it's just going to take time.  Make sure you go back to emergency and get yourself sorted out.  smile

I'm so sorry your son had to suffer like that. I pray he makes a full recovery. Thank you for your concern. Last time I was in hospital they ran bloods, came back normal. I'm getting further tests done privately. Take care

It's good that you have taken steps to sort this out yourself by going private although I feel that we have paid enough into the NHS why should we have to go private. Sometimes though there is a limit to how much one can suffer and if you feel that you're not getting better, going private is the only solution. They ran bloods with my son everyday and along with the lumbar puncture they were able to determine that he had the virus form.  These viruses are very nasty and under-rated. Noone, not even a medical person should look at you and make you feel that you just have an GF, get on with it as everyone's pain threshold is different.

Remember to keep hydrated and rest as much as you can.

Keep me posted on how you get on.

Tracey is your son getting better? Bless him. It can't be easy for you either. I hope you're getting support. I read in your post he has sinusitis too, that's awful. I know how a sinus infection feels, like your heads going to explode. GF does affect your moods. I've been feeling frustrated and angry not just with the medics but myself. I'm sick of eating pureed food like a baby. How I crave a Burger, just something substantial. I've lost 10 kilos in the last 2 months. Are you in UK?

      Take care x

Hi I found out about 3 or 4 weeks ago I have gf. The day I found out I was nearly passing out, my heart was fluttering, I was dizzy, so Iwent straight to my dDr and she told me, via the hospital for a drip and steroid. I was sick as a dog. I was petrified I wad going to die. But then I remembered, I have anxiety, which causes me to freak out and affects my breathing, then I will give myself a chest infection, so I knew I had to calm down. I have been on codral cold and flu with decongestant which I shouldn't be on as it suppresses the virus. So I am going to try Sudafed for sinus, duro Russ to break Lucas up, sambucol, for immunity and garlic and horseraddish to break up mucus. I have been coughing up so much mucus but, you need to get it out to get better, have a warm shower and use the hot air to break it up and cough it up, everything I spit out I replace with water, apple juice, eat 3 bit of fruit a day for vitamin c, there is a gf diet. Stay away from dairy, sugar, processed foods. Rest and look at the internet, keep your mind busy, there are clinical trials and I noticed some were for drugs but one in particular was for mental discussion, which I found interesting. If you can stay with someone to keep your mind busy, do so, but don't let it depress you, I was thinking I was terminally ill, that's how much I freaked out, but I read forums and posts and have not had any dairy, sugar or processed foods, a big no no. I hope this helps. Calm down. Anxiety is good at freaking you out. Enjoy the rest. Turn a negative into a positive.

Thank you for sharing!  We all can continue to support each other.  I was diagnosed with GF (mono) the end of December 2015. Recently I have been up to 80% activity/energy level. But then, due to stress I could not control, I crashed down to 30%. Now after resting for a week I am back up to 50%.

I agree with the healthy diet you talked about and quality supplements.

I am still having a lot of social anxiety--which is new to me.  I stay home a lot.  When invited to go out I usually say "no thanks".  Just can't seem to handle being around people other than my immediate family.

      Hang in there!

Thanks for your imput and advice.I`m happy you`re on top of your illness.GF affects people in many different ways.Every case is different. My case is considered acute.I could not rest or sleep as my breathing was constricted.I am a very positive and calm person by nature.I meditate ,use positive affimations and pray on a daily basis. What angers me the most is the use of the term "Anxiety".I am in the midst of changing my health specialist due to her continuously telling me I`m very anxious.I would prefer to use the term "worried".Worried that I could only sleep by sitting upright due to breathing difficulties.Worried because I could only eat baby food.Worried because I kept fainting(due to low iron).Worried because I had and still have zero energy.Worried my energy levels will be low for a long time.Worried because my 70 yr old mum has being caring for me for over 3 months.I can only describe this illness as living hell. And I`m sure others would agree.I send love and blessings to everyone suffering from Glandular Fever. We will all heal from this X

Hi, It has been 2 months since I had my first symptoms & I still have difficulty swallowing, sore throat. I have an appointment with ENT doc as I am freaking out if this is cancer !

    Hi,

I see this is a older post. However I am desperate to find someone who has gone through what I have and has recovered.

In December, I woke up to swollen lymph nodes and issues swallowing. I also feel like I have something stuck in my throat. I immediately rushed to the emergency room. They checked to see if there was a obstruction, there wasn't.So they sent me home with steroids and amoxicillin and a referral to the GI doctor. I started my amoxicillin and immediately broke out into a horrible rash. I panicked went back to the ER, they told me, I am highly allergic to amoxicillin. My issues with swallowing gradually worsened along with the lump sensation. I then went to Gi doctor, they decided to do a endoscopy with dilation. I had the endoscopy done, to be told, I do have acid reflux. But the biopsy came back normal, no cancer. Frustrated at this point, I went to see the ENT. ENT did a laryngoscopy, she said everything appeared to be fine. My tonsils were enlarged and red, my adenoids were enlarged but nothing major! By this point I couldn't eat solids at all!!!!!! So GI put me on 4 different meds to help with Gerd, I've never really had any issues with acid, so this seemed to be pointless and ineffective. Next I went through a barium swallow. The radiologist told me i had no motility issue, my lymph nodes were swollen and liquids were retaining in my vallecula, probably from swelling. So, back to the GI doctor for them to tell me, my gallbladder is bad and it is probably the problem. They wanted it removed. So to surgery I went, gallbladder was removed and still couldn't swallow. Now at this point I began to have migraines, aches, sore throat, nausea, enlarged spleen, swollen liver. I then scheduled a appointment with primary and demanded labs again. December 19th 2020 i was negative for Epstein barr virus and mono. Mid February I was positive for Epstein Barr virus and was told i have mono because of my symptoms. I was told to go home and rest and was given a 6 day course steroids. Steroids helped and allowed me to eat soft foods without choking. However, I am still fatigued, still have sore throat, I have episodes where my nasal passages get extremely dry and so does my throat, which makes it impossible to sleep. Once steroids were over, I began to have issues swallowing all over again. Along with swelling in my throat and my tonsils became red again and irritated. I then went to UNC where I was told, all of my symptoms are common with mono. That it is harder for anybody over 25. He sent me home and told me to rest and lots of vitamin C. I have consumed so much Vitamin C, I shouldn't still feel the way I do. I am now on complete bed rest for the liver and spleen. I literally pray numerous times through the day. I'm so ready for this to be over with.
