Glans goes from dry peeling to red irritated in cycles
Posted , 9 users are following.
I've had yeast infections on my glans before, but this past winter, I've had more issues with the skin on my glans than ever in my life. The skin gets so dry it peels. Then a few days later, it's red and irritated, and sometimes (rarely) itchy. Sometimes it appears to be balanitis, other times not so much. Any ideas?

That looks like balanitis to me, so probably another yeast infection.
If it's balanitis, then these links may help, though the second article is written for doctors:
https://patient.info/health/balanitis-leaflet
https://patient.info/doctor/balanitis-pro ;
Washing (with water, no soap) daily, and taking a leak and washing after masturbation or sex will probably help, and you could also try Canesten cream or Daktarin cream. Loose fitting cotton underwear may help, and some sites recommend washing underwear with non-biological washing powder or liquid.
(Canesten is also known as Clotrimazole, and Daktarin is also known as Miconazole or these brand names: Desenex and Zeasorb in US and Canada, Micatin, Monistat-Derm, Daktarin in India, UK, Australia, Belgium and the Philippines, Daktar in Norway, Fungidal in Bangladesh, Decocort in Malaysia.)
If it gets worse, or doesn't respond to anti-fungals, I'd see a doctor. You could either see your GP, or if you're in the UK, you could go to a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic - google "GUM clinic near me" for details.
If you could update this thread and tell us what the doctors say, it would be appreciated. Good luck.

My first thought is it has to balanitis/yeast, but I've tried anti-fungals and the issue doesn't go away. I'm pretty sure my body wash is exacerbating the problem, but even when I try a brand that seems to help, it'll still come back same day (my glans may look fine when I get dressed in the morning and be very dry next time I urinate). I should also note that an extra symptom when it is really bad is a bit of pain near the urethral opening that can be bad enough to impact intercourse.

I wouldn't use any form of soap or cleaning agent if I were you - just use soap. If you think you really need soap or shower gel there, then at least make sure it's completely washed off.
The pain near the urethral opening sounds like meatitis, which can be caused by balanitis.
I don't think it's lichen sclerosus (aka balanitis xerotica obliterans or BXO) btw.

Hi adam, what you may have is Lichen Sclerosus [LS] which is the more severe form of Balanitis. I have this condition, and when you say it may be exacerbated by body wash, this is what was happening for me. This can further worsened each time you urinate - unless you know you to deal with it.
As ml66uk states, best approach is to see a medical professional - particularly if you see a sexual health specialist. If what you have is LS, it is not an STI / STD, it is caused by a severe reaction to something the head of your penis is in regular contact with. A dermatologist may be a second medical specialist option.
You need to prevent the head of the penis coming in to contact with ANY chemical including soap, hair shampoo, body wash / gel, etc., condoms that are not for sensitive skin, lubes and so on. For the clothes your penis is in regular contact with, you need to wash them with pure soap flakes - you can get these in liquid form to use in a washing machine, too.
Every time you urinate, are sexually aroused or have ejaculated you must remove all traces from the head and shaft of the penis as soon as possible. If you cannot wash your penis each time you urinate, use some toilet tissue to ensure you are 100% dry.
You may not actually have LS, but as you mention - "this past winter, I've had more issues with the skin on my glans than ever in my life" - sounds like you have been getting adverse reactions for quite some time (this is typical with LS, too), so you need to get the right medical professional to check this, and give you the correct diagnosis.
Good Luck - W.D. update this post to say how you are getting on once you see a medic .....

So this essentially is dependant upon which country you live in. Long story short: Auto-Immune based conditions are impacting on a broader number of people - health services have been slow to respond to this in most countries of the world.
However, in countries such as the UK and the US there are a growing number of specialist's who deal with Lichen Sclerosus (LS) - or the Male specific version which is BXO.
The majority of sufferers of Lichen Sclerosus are women, so many services have developed to support women in Gyneacology departments of General Hospitals. Some of these are actually skin specialists such as Dermatologists, others are Gynaecologists with specialist knowledge.
Associated with this, Dermatologists who have specialist knowledge of Genital Skin Conditions are becoming more widely available to treat anyone who has a genital based skin disorder, as cases are known in children.
Best thing to do to find such as specialist is to do an internet search for the region or district in which you live, e.g London - Yew York - Paris (whatever)
Then - Genital Skin Disorders, or Genital Skin Care
Then - Specialist or Dermatologist or Genital Skin Disorders Specialist
... or any combination of these terms

There is no evidence of LS in the Photo, I have been managing my LS for nine years, no LS looks like what you have in the photo ...

I had the same issue. i was depressed and thought it would never go away. Go buy pure organic coconut oil and lather it on your penis. especially before you fall asleep at night and sleep naked on your back so your dick does not touch anything and stays moisturising. I promise, this should really help. obviously test out a small amount of coconut oil on yourself to make sure you dont have allergies.

I think I have something similar on the shaft of my penis (not the glans). Did you ever find out what it was and did you manage to treat it? If so what with??
