globus - It will go away! - promise

In 2007 I suffered from Globus for 12 months - it got me really down- I couldnt enjoy activities that used to make me happy and was continually worried and thinking the worst.

I saw a number of GP's and got referred to a ENT specialist who checked my throat via a small nasal camera - all clear.

Despite my Dad having this for a while and reassuring me that it does get better I focussed on the symptom and expected it to arrive every day (which it did!)

Gradually it wasn't there one day then would come back - then it may disappear for a few days and then come back - it is a gradual process but once you stop obsessing about it , it will improve. I promise.

My GP treated it as a symptom of anxiety and prescribed prozac - which had no effect. Much as I hate to admit it - my fiancee was right to keep telling me to stop obsessing and try and focus on other things - it is the only way to beat this.

Somedays it still makes an appearance (infact thinking about it now I can bring on the sensation!) but you can make it go - focus on yuor good days and know that there will be gradually be more good than bad - it will go I PROMISE!

Thank you, I really hope it goes away, I've literally tried everything but nothing works and now it's actually sore in the front of the throat from rubbing it for hours. It gives me so much anxiety and my blood pressure is high because of it.

I really feel each time I eat it flares up. I even listened to one of the posts and pretty much skipped eating a few days and drank only water. It seemed to work. It didn’t go away but it calmed down. If you can’t get to a point of acceptance, you need to ask about Botox for the esophageal sphynchter.

The only pill I take is for anxiety because of this sensation. My doctor gave me lorazepam. I have completely changed what I eat and I am getting so much better. Yes, it’s horrible.

I have been suffering from this for about a month now. It is the most horrible thing ever. It's so annoying and I obessess about it all day everyday, it feels like there is a lump in my throat all day everyday. I went to the Dr today and got started on buspar for my anxiety . Any tips or ideas in how to make this feeling go away would be greatly appreciated. I don't even wanna leave my house anymore because of this ,and I'm starting to get extremely depressed over it.

Mia, I am so sorry that you are suffering from this issue.  I have also been suffering since October.  I have learned many things on my own.  After two visits to two different ENT's, an endoscopy, biopsies, etc.  just to rule out anything else.  I knew from the beginning that it was going to be diagnosed as Globus Sensation.  However; doctors have to do process of elimination mostly to cover themselves from being sued I think.  You need to calm down, take your anxiety meds.  I take lorazepam.  It's not a cure, it's just allowing us to cope.  I have learned that there are certain things that irritate it and causes a larger feeling.  I drink cold water all day long to calm the spasms.  I haven't been eating many foods as everytime I eat, I spasm.  From what I have figured out, the sensation of the lump is caused by our esophagus starting to spasm.  I also taught myself and then later read to use lavender essential oils.  seriously this has calmed the sensation to be tolerable. I found it in a spray and I am waiting for it to arrive.  I think that will be easier to use other than drops or a roll on.  If I eat bread, ice cream, pretty much anything, the sensation becomes large again.  AND I also feel pressure in my chest.  In my own reading, that is simply esophageal spasms causing this.  Sometimes making one feel they are having a heart attack.  I too feel like my life has stopped.  I just come home from work and want to stay and go no where.  I am at a point right now of acceptance of my new life so to speak.  finally started back to church, but babysteps as my comfert is still at home, where I feel I have more control of keeping this feeling stable.  We all need a support group.  dont we?  also, my sister just yesterday sent me an article that said new breakthrough of throat irritation and globus sensation.  It was dated Sept 25, 2017.  this is great news. However; it was discovered in Vienna but has been shared with the world.  I am curious why one of our doctors in this discussion haven't mentioned this.  They do some sort of an ablation in the muscles I guess.  I, for one, do not want to do this until the USA have done this thousands of times successfully.  But it's the best hope I have read.  high points - control your weight (however; because of this I have lost 12 lbs)  just don't want to eat anything that flares it up.  apples seem to be ok and drink water, water, water.  Start a food diary so you KNOW which ones set if off and then you can also tell your doctor.  Keep me posted.

I have definitely lost a few pounds from not eating because of the globus. My anxiety is so high all the time because of it.It sucks that I have to deal with this, because when I suffer so does my 6 year old daughter. We don't get to go out and do things as much as we used to. I rarely leave the house. The anxiety meds I am am have start to help a little bit. (buspar) I have been trying to get out more, and when I do I go to my dads house since he lives close and my anxiety is NOT as bad when im there since it is familiar. I do have an appointment for an ultrasound of my throat and esophagus , just to ease my mind. I'm also going to meet with an ear nose and throat specialist. My anxiety makes this condition so much worse. I'm always scared that there is really something in my throat, and its gonna cut off my oxygen and kill me. Knowing other people suffer from globus and anxiety REALLY helps my anxiety. Having people to talk to helps too.

Right ...I have had this and I have had it more than once - on both occasions it went away completely after I had a nasal camera down my throat and was told there was nothing wrong with my throat ( iwas worried about cancer) I also believe that there can be irritation due to reflux and its best to take gavison advance right before you go to bed in a good couple of dollops and that keeps stuff down. If you think about it it always gets worse as your throat tightens up and it feels horrible. There is a good voice training exercise which helps as I have been told that it is the false vocal chords tightening which cause the feeling and clearly stress from worrying makes this worse.  If you press youtongue on the roof of your mouth behing front upper teeth and make a humming noise " nnnnnnnnnnnnn" in your throat and try and do it for a count of 20-30 at a time it definitely relaxes these muscles and helps. If you can afford to go get someone to reassure you theres nothing wrong after looking down there then that undoubtedly helps me.
