Globus sensation is starting to ruin my life, any advice would be amazing!

Hi. I am a woman and only 19 years old. I have never had health problems. My parents haven't either, neither did my grandparents. I have been smoking for the past few years tho, but stopped since I started experience these weird feelings.

About a week ago, after a big meal I started feeling like I had something in my throat. I got really panicked and tried coughing it, my friends tried calming me but nothing worked. I went to bed that night really afraid that I might have something bad, because it also made it hard for me to breath.

After that experience, every time I ate something I got the same feeling of a lump in my throat. It got really hard for me to swallow, I feel like the food isn't going down my throat and it scares me that I might choke, so for a few days I only drank liquids. Then, because I was not eating, I started having a burning sensation starting from the middle of my chest up to my mouth that I believe to be acid reflux because I sometimes do experience heartburn due to it.

I went to the doctor and she told me my throat is a bit red and that I have some mucus built up there, but that she cannot tell me anything more due to my lack of symptoms. I tried treating it with teas, gargles, humidifiers and even mucinex, I feel like the mucus started getting better but I still have the globus sensation after eating.

The worst thing is that it makes me really afraid that I might have something really bad, everybody here knows that this sensation could be the symptom of some worse things.. Also I currently moved away for University and am an Ocean away from my family, which does not make it better. But in 3 weeks I finish my semester and am going back for summer so I am looking forward to that.

Please, if anybody has some tips to make this better, I will appreciate anything. The last week has been a nightmare for me, eating stresses me out and I have been crying so much because I am scared and confused. I do not know if I should go take some other tests just to make sure that I do not have anything else. What do you say?

Hey ! I am also 19 in college and ive had the same thing happen to me many times and currently too. I have been searching up so many things bc it bothers me so much and I feel like it only happens to me ! My doctor said it was anxiety and the globus sensation. I had an upper endoscopy done and had mild acid reflux but that wasnt the issue. I suggest u get some tests done to rule it out the way but ive been through that and its just the sensation not the food actually getting stuck. we can get through this hope you find relief !!!

i am so glad I come across this. I am mid 30,s got something like a piece if meat stuck in the throat last year. Went a&e and as covid was at its worst they didnt want to exmine my throat so they mafe me drink to see if there were any obstructions and sent me home. Ever since them I have been really strict about what I eat. I caught covid one month ago was like a chesty cold but anxiety went through the roof, but was eating. suddenly i started to limit my food to semi solids. once i ate that was it i thought something was stuck. that sensation went and I thought to stop the worry i would rather just keep on liquids. 1 week after my liquid diet i now have a lump in my throat all the time. Moves from left to centre and from lump to feeling like hair ball. i did have alot of of stress and anxiety and panic this week. I went to ENT had a camera down nose and nothing, got the swallow scan on Monday. I too want answer because if there is nit a solution with medication then this could last for as long as my head will let it. It is ruining my life as i get great enjoyment eating and going out to restaurants. I am also getting a new phobia of side effects from medication feels like my list of anxiety is growing. i do not suffer with heartburn, but had a period last year where i would wake up feel like i was going to be sick then i would sit up straight and burp and be fine. i not sure if covid has brought on all these phobias 😦

why doesn't anyone come back to say how they are doing....

does it mean it's gone and they simply forgot about it? or it's still there and now they don't wanna talk about it anymore?

i have been suffering for over a year. believe it could be anxiety or repressed emotions as well. i'm going into therapy. how are y'all doing?

hi all, just wanted to add my experience of the dreaded globus, to see if its familiar to anyone else! mine first started back in 2014, it was a very stressful time, things were not going well! it started as a lump feeling, almost as if it was directly behind my nose and into my throat. like others i was sent to ent, they scoped me and gave me a neck ultrasound, all clear and they suspected gerd - although i didnt have the usual heartburn problems. meds for gerd didnt help at all. fast forward all theae years and its still a problem, absolutely worse in times of higher stress. i do get periods where its not there now, but not for long. at the mo its been another stressful time and its back with a vengeance. feels more like phlegm stuck in the middle of my throat that needs to move but never does. i can eat fine, but after i eat its almost as if everything ive eaten is just sitting in my throat and chest for ages, horrible feeling. sound familiar to anyone? from what ive read here it seems so, yiu all have my sympathy

      Hi jmcg2014!

My sympathy to you too. I have it since November 2020. It has been 14 months, the worst time of my life, by far. I'm even on antidepressants. In my case it is probably even worse because I'm not sure if it is globus or a permanent damage to the cartilage of the epiglottis. If you check there is a thread started by me where I detail my situation.

But hey, just imagine that one ENT specialist told your that you have signs of permanent damage from a severe allergy that made your immune system respond by attacking your healthy tissues and cartilages in the throat and that the symptoms are from that and you will have them forever. It's very disturbing, because now I don't know if this can be true or if I "just" have globus from psychological (anxiety) causes.

You say that now you have periods when it is not there. In the first years you hadn't?

I still haven't had the chance to say that there was one day or even one hour when I didn't have it. And it was really important to me, because it would help me accept that I don't have any damage. As long as it is always there, it is compatible with a permanent damage.

I hope you can find a cure to your globus or at least some relief to the symptoms. Stay strong! Big hug!

    Globus sensation?

My 8 year old daughter had a choking episode on a starbucks bacon sandwich the beginning of March and we didnt think much of it. then march 19th she was trying to eat a bean and cheese burrito and she said she couldnt swallow it. so we let a few more days pass and made her a doctors appointment with her pcp. They looked in her throat with the little flash light ans said they didn't see anything that would be causing her to feel like she was choking.

So a week went by, still not eating any solid food we got in with the ent. He didnt see anything with his little flashlight ans felt her throat and didn't seem concerned. But he did refer us to go do the Barium Swallow test at the children's hospital.

They wanted her to do the 3 items for the tests.

liquid drink, - yogurt consistency drink and a cookie.

she refused to even try the cookie because she was terrified she was choke.

Test came back Normal. They said its all in her head.

So were think is she crazy. like how can this be in her head.

Another week as gone by and shes still not eating. Now were going on a month with her not eating any solid food and she is down 10 pounds at this point. shes not going to school because we are scared shes going to pass out from not eating because she has been very tired and no energy at all.

She ended up in the hospital for dehydrated and a Uti.

We spent 4 days in the hospital and the last day they ended up scoping her throat and the results came back normal! Again they said its in her head! Im just going crazy thinking how can she just have this in her mind. These doctors are looking at her like she is crazy or something.

They have never said it could be Globus.

Now were going on almost 2 months with her not eating solid food. were seeing a food therapist and psychologist but I dont feel like its helping.

Just today I had my pcp get me a Urgent referral to go back to the Gi to see if we can get some answers.

Any feed back will be greatly appreciated
