Groin pain 5 weeks after hip replacement

Posted , 20 users are following.

Can I have some advice please? I had a rthr 5 weeks ago and for the last week I have had terrible groin pain in that hip on the pubic side - it's enough to keep me awake at night.

Any ideas what this maybe. I am feeling. My recoveryis slow anyway.

thank you.

Hi Sarah , physiotherapy, physiotherapy and more physiotherapy really is the key 🔑 to the best recovery. I'm 10 weeks now but remember week 5 well , I had groin pain and I remember feeling I was never going to get better, just didn't feel like I was going anywhere fast . 😟. BUT ... started seeing the physiotherapist and wow things so different today 😁. The exercises are so important but a physiotherapist is vital to spot weakness and tight muscles that are hindering your recovery xxxx

    Hi Sarah.

I have had groin pain since week 5. Apparently it's all to do with the big muscle that wraps around the hip joint. Can get torn during op. One of the guys on here told me to ease up on exercises that aggravate it and this has helped.

I am now 11weeks post op. I spoke to physio who was not very helpful at all. In UK my experience is apart from a printed work sheet of exercises that's it !

If it is not better by after Xmas I will be contacting him again. Best of luck. It is a very common complaint. Xx

Thank you. I to am in the UK and all I was sent home with was three exercises which I do regularly. I'm feeling very down today as I'm so tired. I'm supposed to be back to work on Friday 😬! Feeling apprehensive about it. I'm only office based but just having to sit still will be a nightmare. I see the consultant tomorrow and I am going to mention all of this to him. Good luck with your recovery.

I found the same thing with the hospital physiotherapist - and I'm private, so it ought to be the best treatment! But it was the same, pretty much nothing but some (very old) advice on printed sheets. I'm lucky in that I have my own physiotherapist anyway and the difference in quality could not be bigger. I do pay, but I can't take it with me, and what's the point of a good job if I can't invest in my health? She's been working with me for eighteen months now, and the best investment I've made!

Groin passion is one of the worst to get past, because, as you were told, it is really easy to aggravate! But a trick  that I learned from my days in judo is that groin pain can be alleviated by massage, but not just in the groin area! You want to deep massage with circular movements across the back of the hip, from about two inches away from the bottom of the spine, right through the "padding". Really press in with your thumbs or your knuckles- or you can buy cheap wooden tools that will help you do this in many places. Circular movements are better than long movements. And slowly move across the hip, up and down, everywhere you have padding! Obviously, avoid the immediate area of the surgery unless it is 100% healed. Finally take the massage into the groin area, with gentler sweeping movements up and down the groin. Be very careful in this area with oils- don't add anything that will cause a reaction because the skin here is sensitive. You may feel a little immediate relief, but this needs consistency to help much - the muscles are large and need a lot of working on.

I had very bad groin pain a few years ago when the OA pain first hit the left hip, but doing this gave a lot of relief, and with consistency it did stop altogether in about six weeks.

And I obviously meant groin pain not passion. I must pay more attention to what my keyboard predicts!

Hi like you I'm in the Uk I'm in week 5 again like you sent home with just three excersises very dissapointed in physio had one appointment just said I was doing fine. Still have pain in the groin and sleeping around 12 to 14 hours a day. There seems to be very little follow up support here in the UK. Felling very let down by the system

      hi ian,

I am so sorry you feel this way ... It seems that once the surgery is done, we are left on our own - if we are lucky we get a physical therapist who understands us, but most likey not ... that is why this forum so great ...  there are many good youtube videos for exercises after hip replacement surgery ... and to be honest, there is also a theory that no excercise is okay too as long as you walk ....

just come here anytime you have aquestion or concern okay

      big warm hug

      Hi Renee

I think you have something there. I was religious regarding physio exercises until the groin pain. A guy advised me to stop them and just heal. Since then all I have done is walked. Gradually it has improved. I still get aches and pains but have now accepted that the healing does not just happen in the early weeks/months. If professionals were more honest about what to expect maybe we wouldn't worry as much about how long it takes. I was told 6 weeks and back to normal more or less 😂

Thank God for this site and you Renee. You are doing Gods work on here. 😘👍

I do agree with you about so called after care in the UK. Apart from a printed sheet (I can do all the exercises) that's all you get after a practice walk with the Physio in the hospital. I am nearly 7 weeks post thr and still have groin pain with a hard lump. I have started driving but still limp when I walk. On the whole not bad but the groin pain worries me. Due to see consultant next week.

Hi Sarah, i had pain in pubic bone on the opposite side to my OP, i had posterial inssion and my surgeon said it could be due to all the hammering they have to do to get the prothses into the bone, he said its pretty heavy duty, and lots of places get bruiesd and i have also got a dead leg on that side, he is not sure that it will go back to normal due to nerve damage. Best of luck hope it settles down for you.

Same here Sarah 9 weeks bad groin pain keeps me awake 😡

Hi Hazel. How you doing. A guy on here suggested the groin pain can be iliopsoris tendernitis. Hope I've spelt it right

He told me keeping doing the physio exercises could aggravate and exacerbate any tears in the muscle.

Google it. There are a number of exercises suggested and also the massage. Going from the belly button across to locate the pain. Mine was actually on the hip bone and the groin pain was deferred pain. This massage has helped loads.

As I say I have not found here in UK that we get the same level of physio as America or Australia.

I returned to work at 9 weeks but I am really having to be strict with how long I drive and how long I sit. My physio did say he would not expect me to be pain free at 11 weeks. It's a long haul 😬

Hopefully the Australian heat will help in February. Love and hugs Sandra. Xx

I found icing the area helps. I had same thing and it can be very bothersome. Found myself rubbing the area all the time!! But icing really helps. I hope you get to feeling better! 🤓 LD
