had the most draining day

Hi all

Had my absence management meeting today at work as I've been off for 3 months after a bad relapse following excessive workload and long hours without a break.

The meeting was over 2 hours long and basically management have not exactly considered my condition. My union rep is fighting it but I'm worried if I fight too hard they will just make life hard when I return full time. I came out completely flawed and sat in a ball at home in the dark for several hours trying to recoup. Not sure why I'm telling you all this I suppose just wanted to link up with someone that gets what it's like.

I am in Canada.  Here, if I am denied disability benefits, I can sue with no cost to myself by using lawyers on contingency.

I can't imagine being in a meeting over 2 hours long. That's got to be both emotionally and physically draining. I think you have to advocate for yourself as best you can. Hope you recover soon.

Hi mazpaz, try not to feel down. It has happened to all of us. Just try and stay strong and it's ok to lean on your loved ones.

I'm off sick for a couple of weeks now with the fatigue and pain that has drained me to a point where I can't work. I'm trying to take it easy and recouperate. If you can treat your self to some relaxing massage.

Try and ease yourself back into work by starting part time and increasing your hours gradually. You have rights and they cannot discriminate you. Hope fully you get better soon xx

Thanks for kind words. I just want the best chance to get back to health again. But I suspect it won't be a friendly place if I do get back. It's so hard just dealing with the illness and all that life throws at you without this extra stress.

Well had the second meeting today and was forced to agree to everything. My Union Rep basically said my only other route was grievance which wouldn't be a good route to go if I need to keep my job. I kept reinforcing to HR and my manager that I needed support and that I had been really ill and didn't want to go downhill again. It's all a mess as I know my manager won't give two hoots once I start back.

Why don't we ever get a break and just a bit of understanding!!!!

      Hi Paz,

That sounds so disappointing : ( can you look at getting a further sick note from the doctor? From what you are saying, you don't feel well enough to go back and aren't supported. I know its really draining to keep having to fight, can you go to advice bureau? Sounds like you need some extra lines of defence to get support with this.

I could but the longer I'm off the easier it is to get rid of me. Having read alot of the legalities around my profession I have learnt that they basically have the upper hand and I have no leg to stand on. I'll just have to give it a go and see what transpires.

That sounds awful. Still maybe worth checking with advice bureau. Cfs/me is classed under the disability act, what they propose needs to be in line with that. I hope they put help In for you.

      Best wishes

Hi, I am not sure what you do but I was in a similar position last year. Too ill to work so they decided to start discipline procedures to sack me. Luckily the company doctor was fantastic and I have just been awarded I'll health pension. Your health is too important, I think you should go off sick as you are going to make yourself worse. I have learnt money isn't everything, good luck x

I'm really pleased for you. HR won't agree to ill health as they believe that it's possible to recover at some point in the future. Basically I have no rights as there is the get out clause that my manager can refuse to make any adjustments, they don't have to undertake any OH advice so I'm stuffed. I'm a teacher by the way.

Have you been referred to a specialist me clinic by your go? If not ask them to. The doctor there will do a report which may be useful to provide to HR. I do know teachers who have been given I'll health due to Cfs x

Yes I have, they sent a generic letter to give to my Head, but in that it states CFS/ME is not life long. So they've already sunk me even though when I was first diagnosed in 2002 the consultant at the time said I had already had it too long, was unlikely to recover to full health and wouldn't be working as a teacher within a year.

There just seems no support in place any where in this region - or even the next.

      Really dispondent about it all.

Really sorry to hear that, it's a shame the consultant didn't put all that in a letter for you. I didn't think I would get ill health as my letter was similar but fortunately did. Good luck though, do you have a local ME group where you are?

I think so but when I'm working they meet at times I can't make.

      Hi again,

Was the consultant from me clinic? I guess if not and you have one in yr area, you could be referred? Yr gp can refer you, I hope there is something you can do.
