Has Any One Else Noticed this Unusual Vision Issue with Symfony Lens

I had a cataract surgery on my right eye a week back and decided to go with A Symfony Toric Lens because of all the positive things I have read about the lens. I have had a IOL in my left eye for almost 18 years, which I have been happy with for reading, so that I was looking basically for good distance and intermediate vision with the Symfony (I am used to monovision for the last 25 years).

My right eye still has some astigmatism (slowly improving), had issue with seeing streaks from lights for only the first 3 days, am seeing halo around the lights (will probably get adjusted to it), but also have another interesting vision issue which I had not seen mentioned by any of the doctors or the patients on the web. Using just my right eye, I don't just see a halo around a light, but see about 7 perfect concentric circles around the light, with the diameter of the outermost circle being about 3-4 times that of the halo diameter. Since the Symfony lens has the unique feature of having about the same number of circular “diffractive echelette design” in the lens, I am sure that the concentric circles which I am seeing is because of this proprietary design.

Looking through these circles to look at a light is like looking at a light through a spider web. It is not so bad that I wish that I had not selected Symfony lens (I like the Extended Vision), but why has this effect not been publicized more? Have any of the other Symfony Lens users experienced seeing these concentric circles?

I just had my eyes done in 2/8/2018

I am experiencing all and more of what you do or did.

My Dr said don’t look at lights.

What have you done about it? Any recourse?

It is still the same and no I don't think theres much that can be done..Im going to give it more time and see if anything changes..I am now having a lot of floaters and spider web type things going on..driving at night it looks like a starburst effect..I really not sure what can be done right now but I am going to look into it after a few months..I doubt they could do anything right now as it's only been 5 weeks and probably needs to heal more..

Yours on the other hand has been since Feb and that's been 3 months hopefully it just needs to completely heal..I will let you know how it is going after my next check up and see what he says..

Im not sure what they can do about it other then changing it and trying something else which is probably going to be the same thing..

I have just learned to live with seeing the multiple circles around lights at night, just as we do with all the other bad things in life. Otherwise, those continue to be as bad as ever.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any recourse if the companies do not provide you complete information regarding their products.

The only thing I could do, and did, was to start this post so that the people are aware of this potential issue with the Symfony lens, so that they can make a more informed decision about whether a Symfony lens is a good or bad compromise for them.

it takes time for eye to settle after surgery. As we get older vitreous can pull away from retina giving floaters. Many will settle out of sight with time.

i know I do not notice halos unless I make an effort. My brain eliminates them at night ..I just see the cars or street lights though halos and starbursts are there when I think about them

drs often do not offer multi focal lenses unless people understand there is a trade off for seamless vision. It is at night where the lens create a halo or starbursts around certain lights. But do be patient as the turbulence in the eye, and possible surgical effect on cornea will pass with time..

I had a Symfony lens inserted five days ago. The halos are bothersome, but what upsets me the most is that colors are different, especially green is darker and sometimes looks gray at a distance. Also, colors are sharper and brighter in the eye that has not yet had surgery (when I use my glasses). I have strong astigmatism, and it is nice to be able to see without glasses, but I do not want to give up the beauty of the green mountains where I live. Is this normal?

      Pamela,

My Symfony lenses were put in a year ago,  and the halos and other annoyances are mostly non existent now.   The color loss that I had for the first two or three weeks... went away after my eye drops ran out.  So,  first eye was done in early February, second eye done three weeks later.  Color returned as normal in March.   Hopefully this will be your experience as well.  If you have any problem in the future... focusing,  it may be due to dry eyes.  Do take good after care over the next few months.  I now use a gel eye drop that comes in a tube...  whenever  I experience any sign of dryness.

      I hope this helps.

I have the same problem but mine are mostly reds blues everything looks more purple or magenta. It is so frustrating I told the doctor about it and he said oh those are true colors which is a load of you know what . I picked my colors way before I had any problems with my eyes and I know I didn’t pick purple. I think that is my biggest issue also I still don’t have the brightness with lights on.  I have starbursts when driving at night and floaters. Hoping that goes away after sometim but my biggest issue is the colors. I just had the other eye done Friday so now I have nothing to compare it with.  Wanted to paint the inside of my house but now I’m afraid of how I’m going to pick the right color. If you find any answers please let me know.

That color perception change, especially increased blue and purple/violet intensity is quite common since your old natural lens gets more yellow with age which reduces blue and violet colors.  So your eye and brain have to now get used to the increased blue and violet intensity with the clear implanted lens.  It took a couple months for my eye to get used to it and the colors appear natural now for me.

So just give it some time for the apparent color changes.

Thank you very much Sharon! This does bring me much comfort. Today I had been debating not going ahead with the second surgery in 10 days.

I didn’t have mine done that close together,  it was more like three to four weeks apart... my left eye was more difficult than my right.  I am now used to any halo...  which is a very small amount.  Bright car lights were a problem before the surgeries,  so I suppose nothing has changed there.  I don’t miss the dirty glasses,  sliding down my nose... scratches on the lenses etc.  There is always a trade off.   Like I mentioned in my last message... do get some good eye drops and use them as your doctor directs if you have the least bit of dry/itchy or irritated eyes once they are healed of surgery. 😉

in a way  it was comforting for me to hear from someone else sharing the same problems. I could find nothing about it online. I have a bush with red leaves that now is almost a magenta. What’s interesting is that today someone sent me a picture of the mountains to my cell, and the pictures on the cell phone do not have the bluish tint that I see with my eye when I look outside myself.

What is my recourse? It is affecting my job since I  am a designer and work with numbers as well.

My eyesiye is worse than ever. I can not afford to pay for this again.

By the way... I was one of the last patients my Doctor saw. He retired the day of my last visit

I don’t know what recourse you would have

What did you have put in

give your eye time. The cornea had tiny cuts and removing the cataract was stress...you may find colors will become wonderful as things settle...Getting rid of astigmatism is tricky but new lenses are quite good. They can do a laser touch up in six months if it is slightly off..It takes time .i suggest get artificial tears to help cornea heal ..if you watch cataract surgery on YouTube you can see them make those tiny cuts..Fasciinating but sort of creepy

Hello, just a question about night vision with the symfony lens.  im 52 and had my left eye done about 1 month ago.  it was due to a non-traumatic rapid onset cataract.  the day vision is great.  indoors i do notice some glare around artificial lights.  my main concern is the night vision.  i see the concentric circles and starburst glare with any automotive lights. i was considering getting the other eye done as my depth perception is noticeably off.  im curious if you can comment on any improvement or "adaptation" regarding the night vision over time after a symfony iol.

I have not seen any change in seeing the concentric circles around lights at night due to the Symfony lens over the 18 months period that I have had it in my right eye.

Also 18 months out.....  While the circles and glare are still there, and noticeable....  They appear to not be as severe as I more or less got used to them....
