Has Any One Else Noticed this Unusual Vision Issue with Symfony Lens

I had a cataract surgery on my right eye a week back and decided to go with A Symfony Toric Lens because of all the positive things I have read about the lens. I have had a IOL in my left eye for almost 18 years, which I have been happy with for reading, so that I was looking basically for good distance and intermediate vision with the Symfony (I am used to monovision for the last 25 years).

My right eye still has some astigmatism (slowly improving), had issue with seeing streaks from lights for only the first 3 days, am seeing halo around the lights (will probably get adjusted to it), but also have another interesting vision issue which I had not seen mentioned by any of the doctors or the patients on the web. Using just my right eye, I don't just see a halo around a light, but see about 7 perfect concentric circles around the light, with the diameter of the outermost circle being about 3-4 times that of the halo diameter. Since the Symfony lens has the unique feature of having about the same number of circular “diffractive echelette design” in the lens, I am sure that the concentric circles which I am seeing is because of this proprietary design.

Looking through these circles to look at a light is like looking at a light through a spider web. It is not so bad that I wish that I had not selected Symfony lens (I like the Extended Vision), but why has this effect not been publicized more? Have any of the other Symfony Lens users experienced seeing these concentric circles?

I have simfony lenses in both eyes since my cataract surgery in 2017. I don't see concentric circles but I do see huge sunrays around headlights while night driving. I created the attached image to show what I see while night driving.

that is interesting Diana. I had my Symfony lenses implanted in 2017 as well and for several weeks (and increasingly over the months/year) that sunray or flare/glare you see disappeared and I swe less of that but now very defined concentric circles with outer rings a lot fainter than inner ones.

There was a poster here 201a who I think mentioned to me that that sunray or glare/flare I called it was hiding the concentric circles.

I am assuming you kept seeing the sunray vs circles over time?

I see you are replying to 201a. Sadly have not seen him post since 2017. Perhaps he'll see your comment and reply back.

Other than night driving how has your vision been with Symfony lenses. Would be curious to know as I had my surgeries that year too.

my eyesight is ruined, after choosing symfony lens. i paid 5000 extra bc i was told they were cutting edge the best. i have neverending floaters and a be eled glass fog, and at night the halos make it feel like im tripping on acid. my eyesight used to be good, now i am scared even to go to an eye doc. when i reported my issues i was told that they disclosed all these possibilities, and too bad so sad. people who have classic cateract surgery are all happy. my eyesight is so compromised i wont drive at night anymore.

Hi Riley - i have not seen at201 post in a few years.

I did get Symfony lenses in 2017 about 6 weeks apart and see well with them although I do see concentric circles around certain light sources at night.

I did have cataracts and vision very poor prior to surgeries (20/60 in right eye and 20/50 in left). You did not mention - but did you have cataracts or did you have clear lens exchange done. Often at normal cataract age many have deteriorating vision so this is a great improvement - if all goes as planned and target is achieved. Those who get cataracts at a younger age will see this as a compromise - especially as their pupils do sometimes st night enlarge beyond the edge of IOL causing more visual disturbances.

Have you seen an optometrist to get an exact prescription? This would tell you if the target was achieved and there are other issues going on. You should be seeing very well during the day with Symfony from 18 inches to distance. some do need readers to see up closer and for fine print. Start with the optometrist yo find put what is going on and then you may want yo see another specialist for 2nd opinion. There may be something else wrong like a tilting of the lens etc. But you really should seek out additional opinions.
