Has anybody been diagnosed with Microvascular Angina?

Posted , 20 users are following.

I have had this condition for about 4 months and it is really getting on top of me. I sometimes have it all day, with tightness, pain in chest and into my neck, now have a cough. Have trips to ED with tests, but usually normal, except for stress test which I lasted for less than 1 min. They wouldn't let me continue. Had angiogram, normal. Are now on GTN tablet and spray, Diltizem and Atenolol. Have now got Morphine at home to control bad episodes. My life is very restricted, I used to be very active with walking and running, but can now do neither. Sometimes even a flight of stairs is too much. Has anybody got any suggestions?

Yes we had a clod last ouple of days here in spring mind you, stayed indoors to keep warm...all good, got to relax watch tv and the odd jobs done inside. Go out side today as was a nice day did my  jobs outside came in for my morning cup of tea and then 1/2 hr later ...Boom... tried to stick it out, managed to reduce pain, was short lived came back ended up calling for an ambulance, transported into ED everything came back negative, had to explain to the emergency doctor what I know was going on and who diagnosed me and that I wasn't leaving until pain relief was given, he was agreeable and ordered Endone and then I could be on my way..Endone has kicked in am now pain free, When will  these emergency doctors realise just because everything looks normal and that  our spasm pains are extremely painful...

I have noticed over the last month or so different doctors have their own opinions on Prinzmetal....Like it doesn't always/if at all show up on an ECG,then you have another one saying any spasming of the arteries will always show up on an ECG....who do you believe ?

Hi Andrew, I too have seen Prof Kaski on utube even given the information to consultant at hospital (dont think he was very impressed) and left a dvd and print off of this forum with my GP who believes it is MVD that I have. Thank goodness I have him on my side, I was curious as to what other condition could cause raised troponin although it has not always been raised on my visits to emergency dept but surely sometimes would be a good reason to suspect heart problem

I was told that Prinzmetal is associated with Diabetis is this correct

      Hi Linda ,

From my research of it ...Prinzmetal .... is a rare condition ,I suppose Diabetes could be a pre cursor for it but I haven't found that in my research, It is more common in the 45 and below age group and more prevalant in Women

I have read and heard that diabetics can have heart attacks with out any of the heart attack symptoms.

well done! my current consultant was less than happy the other (origional) was interested and was doing more but left... Not seen any asociation with diabetes but any system stress would help influence the onset of PM / MVS i would have thought... but as to actual association, not seen that with any of my reading...

Prinzmetal and MVD are two different conditions is that right I have researched both and this is the conclusion I reached

Hmmm yes and no, both are blood vessel spasms but it seems one set of events sets off PM and something else or the same sets of Micro vessels spasms. as you can have both or either the answer isnt clear cut. also different treatments work on each differently but sometimes synergistically as well... so the easy answer is they are sort of different but similar... however they are equally annoying!!!!!!

The best answer I can give to you Linda is that I asked my more experienced Cardiologist about these spasms and he said that what I have is the small blood vessels in the heart going into severe spasming, vessels which can't be seen by the naked eye or even by an Angiogram and there is no test to see the spasming occuring, there is for the Coronary arteries but where I am they are even reluctant to perform that test....My Cardio said to me that "In theory I have Prinzmetal Angina but in practice I don't " if you can dechiper that....I sort of can but not fully understand that comment of his

I've come to the conclusion that if they can't find anything in tests down here they tend  to think it's not heart related ,the same for any other medical  condition and put you in the "to hard basket" It took an emergency doctor years ago to put a name to mine and I think I believe him more than any specialists, they are just over paid doctors with a few extra qualifications written on their diplomas smile

Hi samuels, we havent communicated for a while how are you doing? I have been attending A&E at a different hospital with more success and have been diagnosed with Unstable Angina, they know I have had an Angiogram done and the results of it but it seems they want to do there own investigations and have scheduled me for a Non Invasive Angiogram performed with a new method of CT Scan on 6th January, They have started me on a slow release type of GTN (Isosorbide) now and although I still have to use the spray sometimes it seems to work most times, I was started on half a tablet first visit to A&E and subsiquent overnight stay then increased to one on second A&E with two nights on cardiology ward and have said if this doesnt work an additional tablet Nicorandil can be taken. The best thing though is - they want me to have a follow up appointment which is very reasuring where I dont feel that I have been abondoned as with the other hospital

I recently had an angiogram with Coronary Reactivity Testing (CRT) which is considered the "gold standard" test for microvascular disease. Sounds like it's only being done at three teaching hospitals in the states and I was very fortunate to be seeing a cardiologist at one of those hospitals.
