Has anybody been diagnosed with Microvascular Angina?

I have had this condition for about 4 months and it is really getting on top of me. I sometimes have it all day, with tightness, pain in chest and into my neck, now have a cough. Have trips to ED with tests, but usually normal, except for stress test which I lasted for less than 1 min. They wouldn't let me continue. Had angiogram, normal. Are now on GTN tablet and spray, Diltizem and Atenolol. Have now got Morphine at home to control bad episodes. My life is very restricted, I used to be very active with walking and running, but can now do neither. Sometimes even a flight of stairs is too much. Has anybody got any suggestions?

I have just noticed on the internet, that 5 HTP could be linked to heart spasms.  Has anybody had this ??.

I am still no good since my last attack and now breathless most of the day and flutter heart feelings and get a lot of pain, but doesn't seem to progress to a bad one...yet??  I am now waiting for another scan, for damage but have a 8 wk waiting list, so it's going to be a long 8 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I can't sleep on my back or left side now and rather annoying.  So something must have happened for the change.  They are also going to do a spirometry test, (lung), which I think is a waste of time, but may as well if they want to, never know what they might find.

interesting, not see this association but would make sense if there is an asscoaition between being relaxed and having spasms (morning and overnight) hmmm i would have to go with ask Prof or your cardiologist i would be interested in seeing... as i have ME i have poor sleep so... but very interested... i will be asking My GP next time...  thank you...

My sleep patterns are a bit unusual as in what time I go to bed, some nights I could be in bed by 11pm but usually it's between 1-2am and I sleep like a log, however I have to use a CPAP machine due to severe sleep apnea and I've been told that whith out the machine it's putting a huge amount of stress on my ticker. The doctors are always asking me if I'm using it . I had a sleep study done around 2 years ago and they thought then that they may if found the problems of my Angina but it didn't solve it....I stopped breathing 57 times for 30 seconds in an hour

Hi i am lucky in that i dont have apnea but do have (or did) sleeping panic attacks... this has been largely helped by my overnight heart meds (Monomil...) sleep better but not well i can see how the machine helps!! it seems the micro vasospasms were so bad they were waking me up... they were also causing some Afib - Arrhythmia. the idea of not breathing, sounds scary to me... glad the machine makes that difference!

I used to wake several times a night and also if I dozed off watching telly but that seems to almost stopped now since taking Diltiazem 300mg took a while for meds to kick in though

I use to suffer severe Panic/anxiety but it seems to have disappeared, I have Agoraphobia stillas when I had the mild heart attacks it pushed me futher dwn into it...Agoraphobia....I'ts common after having a heart attack....far of going out espcialy alone.

There has been quite a few times where Prinzmetal has woken me from my sleep and boy.I'm sure yu're well aware  of the consequences smile

Te face mask does get ripped of pretty quickly as I'm short of breath and I'm sure you imagine the feeling with air being forced in and then becoming short of breath and chest pain.....

Hi Pricilla, yes I have this and prinz metals angina, left bundle branch block and first deg heart block, i went to a cardiologist who diognosed micro vascular angina but when i was hospitalized and stress test done i was diognosed with pm, i too only lasted one minute on stress test, i cannot do any excertive activity att all, i have had this six years now and so I have learnt to lead a very sedentary lifestyle as if I do excercise I pay for it later and end up in hospital, I am on verapinal and nicorandil which I find very good GTN spray and monodure tablets plus blood pressure and cholestral tablets, it is a terrible thing because no one seems to think you have anything wrong when every ecg test is normal and troponin levels okay, I am 65 years old and thank goodness I have a lot of hobbies as i cant do much else, shopping is definately out of the question, some doctors are very informative and try to get in with the heart team at the hospital they are marvelous

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with microvascular angina and endothelial dysfunction (12/16/2014) after an angiogram with Coronary Reactivity Testing (CRT).  As a result I'm taking an ace inhibitor (lisinopril 5 mg), an anti anginal (Ranexa ER 1,000 mg) and L-Arginine (1,000 mg 3 x day). All other tests were "good" (lasted 5 min on the treadmill stress test, did not stop due to pain, stopped because I could not keep up the pace - nurse had her hand on my back and kept guiding me forward as I fell behind). Lipids great as a result of changes in diet. Coronary arteries "clean as a whistle". My experience has been that if the major coronary arteries are not a problem anything else is bothersome and learn to live with it. Luckily, I found a cardiologist very engaged in women's heart disease and is very concerned with trying to eliminate the chest pains. I've had "chest pains" for 20-25 years thinking they were indigestion until an abnormal EndoPAT. The abnormal EndoPAT led to the CRT. My chest pains happen most of the time, I have not determined the triggers. My sleep is disrupted as those pains tend to be more severe and last longer.  Right now focusing on weight loss via diet and "exercise" (walking, swimming or biking) as I'm about 50 pounds overweight.

I haven't even been diagnosed but have similar medications such as GTN & bisoprolol etc .I even have  had an angioplasty to revive when I had the heart attack having been going to GPs weekly desperate  for help  re mobility  such as you mention,   for  4 years,  with classic symptons .Still noone is acknowledging even though getting worse so found the Dukes Activity Status DAS to prove the problem.

The other  Tests are set by admins - NICE often not allowing research via x rays especially in A&Es

.Cuts are made by the LA s via suspect  administrations .If you fall into the grey area [ chronic] unfortunately the future does not bade well.

I have  tried via DLA & did not get it till had died 3x .Now it is access assistance abroad as system discriminates .

Hi, I was diagnosed with microvascular angina three or four years ago. I'm quite an active person but was suddenly having pains if I ran or climbed stairs in a hurry. I still do get it if I run or do any heavy exercise all of a sudden but if I build up to it I am ok. I use tai chi breathing into the lower abdomen and manage to get through an hour of fighting fit class and can climb a mountain if I take it steady. I stopped playing squash though and any form of sparring/ partner work because I still get angina doing that. Not sure if that helps at all but I just know you have to make your body as efficient as possible at transferring oxygen into the blood which means keeping as fit as possible and breathing efficiently.

I have been getting chest pains for 3 years now. Initially my GP put me on clopidogrel, something else (forgot the name) and GTN spray. I went for a treadmill ecg which they had to stop after 3 minutes because of chest pain and something on the ecg (I think they said it was an inverted T or something) and they said I had had a SIA.

A couple of weeks later I had an angiagram which the consultant said was clear.

He stopped the clopidogrel and other tablet and said if it helps take the GTN spray.

Over the past 3 years I have had to use the GTN in various ammounts sometines 3 or 4 times a day for 3 or 4 days, then ok for a couple of weeks.

In July I had a bad attack and after taking the GTN 3 times an ambulance had to be called and I was taken to hospital. They gave me some injections, a drip (I don't know what) and 3 doses of morphine to get the pain under control, the consultant saw me the following morning and said he didn't think it was angina as my angiagram 3 years ago had been clear, they then discharged me, still saying use the spray if I got more pains, which I do on the same frequency as earlier.

Do you think I need another angiagram?

I have other medical issues, I am a type 2 diabetic (on insulin), suffer from depression, high cholestrol, high blood pressure, ankalosing spondylitis and insomnia. I am taking medication for all of these.

Hi barney, I don't know how your cardiologist came to the conclusion that you "don't " have a form of angina, angiogram tells them a lot of things but  also there are things that can't be picked up by an angiogram and MVD is one of them according to my cardiologist as the small vessels in the heart are naked to the eye there fore making it impossible to see via an angiogram.

GTN is used for other conditions as well, not just for the heart, I can't remember the other conditions it treats (you'll have to look it up ) but indigestion is one of them, perhaps this maybe why they have asked you to keep using it ? 3 years is a bit early for another angiogram, I have had 3 in the last 15 years and they are hesitant on doing another because it could end up doing damage to major artery entry point, I suppose it depends where they went last time, if they went through the groin then they could safely do another one on you as they now go through the wrist, my cardiologist told me that  if you follow your lifestyle changes and keep up your medication it is highly unlikely that there would be any changes in your coronary arteries.

Also being diabetic they should be keeping a closer eye on you, diabetics can suffer from what's called "silent" heart attacks no symptoms at all. Also being diabetic and if you have ever had any troponin rises they have to take 2 things (maybe more) into consideration as to why your troponins are raised, see the kidneys that maybe out of kilter a bit can also release a troponin rise.

I take it you can't tolerate statins to bring your cholesterol down ? as you say you have high cholesterol,

Hi, I should have been more clear, I am treated for high blood pressure and high cholestrol with enalapril and atorvastatin, they are under control. My diebetes is not under control and I start a new drug (Victoza) on Monday along with my Insulin and Metformin. I was on the Atkins diet for two of the past three years (without the ok from my GP).
