Has anyone been given Nalmefene / selincro ?

Posted , 11 users are following.

I have been following the development of the Nalmefene drug and have tried to get my own Gp to perscripe it for me but with no success. It seems to be the just the thing I need to help me cut back.

I would be interested if anyone can tell me why I can't get it.

Regards

Alan

That is so encouraging to read.  I can't say I have noticed a difference yet but it is very early days. I am having to see my doctor next week to get another month's supply but this time I will take some info. for her to read. I was also thinking that if I ever did have to pay for it privately then I would be more able to afford it because a) I would be spending less money on alcohol and b) I would need fewer tablets each month because I would be drinking less and less.

One other thing - what side effects were you having?

    thanks

Lol almost everything... from feeling very sick to hand cramps to sweating at night , first three weeks are the worst then it gets much much better. Now I dont even notice. I am just starting my second month and have cut back from 2 bottles of cheap 10.5 red wine to about half a bottle most nights. I am now confident I can rewire my brain and get back to being a social drinker rather than feeling panicky if the wine rack isnt full...  How much are you drinking at the moment?

Wow that sounds bad - I haven't really had side effects except feeling a bit spaced out the first couple of times I took it. One thing I have noticed is that after a few years of not getting hangovers I am beginning to get them again which must be the Nalmefene. I drink 4 nights a week and if I'm at home 2 440ml beers and half or more of a bottle of wine. If I'm out it can be a lot more. What I would really like is to be able to have a couple of drinks and leave it at that but that is hard to imagine!

It will come Debs. Just make sure that you ALWAYS take a Nalmefene tablet before drinking. The research suggests that it normally takes about three months for 'pharmacological extinction' (reversal of your addiction) to occur. Even after that, you must still ALWAYS take a pill before drinking or you could easily find yourself back in difficulty.

There are some very strange ones. A client of mine on this treatment has reported to me that he sometimes feels that his skin is coated in something. Another strange one... how do I say this to get it past the moderators smile ...... He wakes up about 3am ready for action smile

Incredible that the side effects can be so different.

question - I am going to a friend tomorrow at lunch time and will drink so of course will take a tablet before I go. Then I will come home and not drink but then go out around 7 and will drink. Presumably I don't need to take another one?

It is considered most effective if taken 1.5 to 2 hours before drinking. It has a half life of 11 hours which means that the amount in your body will have halved 11 hours after taking it. You ought to be fine drinking again in the evening, although the situation isn't ideal. You probably need to work that out by seeing what happens tomorrow evening in terms of your desire to drink more. You shouldn't take a second tablet in the same day.

I should say that double the dose, or three times the dose or even ten times the dose is no more effective than one pill, so it could be the case that half the dose (which would be left in your body after 11 hours) is no less effective.

This is all so new and we are learning more all the time, so it would be good if you could let us know how it goes for you tomorrow.

I think its important to realise that not everyone get the side effects, and also that as Paul says the drugs effect deminishes over time. I have found that if I take my tablet earlier than normal (because of a weekend party) then my desire to carry on drinking returns. But i'm still very early in the program.

For the glazing of Selincro the patient must

meet certain requirements. Inform yourself to medicine.

You can, for example, have not made a withdrawal, your liver / kidney function have a okay, psychosocial concomitant therapy.

It is relatively easy to get in England.
