Has anyone else got or had medication induced akathisia?

Hi

Just wondering if there's anyone else out there who either has or has had akathisia as a result of taking ssris or anti pcyhotics? It seems like an uncommon thing.

I am very sensitive to meds and have severe akathisia from SSRIs. I got it on citalopram, came off that and was put on sertraline and quetiapine. It's all continued. I'm now just off quetiapine and almost if the sertraline.

I have to keep pushing through it every day. If there's anyone else who's experienced this, it would be great to hear from you.

    Hi, m,

got akathisia first from Zoloft (sertraline), then ALL the other ssris.

Been on gabapentin because of it - not much fun, had to get out of it.

Lately I manage to cope using 20-30 mg of propranolol. Hope it helps

Twelve years ago I have taken neurontin gabapentin and after a five day bike ride I remember that when I got of my bike for about half an hour I could not stop walking. Not much thereafter I started to take citalopcitaloparam, for about a year and a half. My GP prescribed it and I was not careful with the dose, someone's I would take half, someone's one, sometimes two, on two or three occasions I took five or seven all at once. This embed me up having to pace around for about three hours a day at a specific time around eight o'clock. I remember scaring my newgirlfriend who was in bed and i was pacing around the bed in the middle of the night, and son she broke up. Then I came of the antidepressants for about six months, but I still had this urge to walk, just that now it was for most of the day.

I was eventually hospitalized, because akathisia looks strange and your body is tense, sitting at a chair in front of a computer as I worked as a software programmer I had constant urges to get up and walk and had to rock myself to cope.

I was prescribed several antipsychotics, nobody knew I came of antidepressants. I was put on olanzapine and it did not stop my pacing. Eventually I came off it, twice, cold turkey, and both times went crazy.

The second time I came of olanzapine I was in a room and kept pacing in circles for four months except for when lying down.

I was then pot on dispersal, ability, even tried clozapine, and a bunch of then there, but only seroquel stopped my pacing.

But I got used to seroquel, and in 8 months relapsed. I came of it and was put back on it twice. Recently my perception on seroquel, thinking and seeing things, was so messed up I can't go on it any more, and akathisia is back.

Last time I was on seroquel 300 and Xeplion 50. Reducing seroquel 100 at a time left me with more and more akathisia.

To date, I am on Xeplion injection and the only way to stop walking offs to lie down in bed..

Now that I cannot take seroquel because of it causing me to relapse, I think that my akathisia offs going to be permanent.

I think it might be permanent even if I take away the meds, like I have done in the past, even if I do this gradually.

I am 40, and dread the years that are to come.

I would appreciate being emailed, I would like to build a network of buddies for people with analysis and hear their solutions, for life as well.

Wow, I really feel for you. It really hit me to see you say you "dread the years to come." So flatly, matter-of-factly, but I relate way too much...

That's what living with akathisia is like. Just gritting your teeth through it, not really enjoying life at all. Just trying to survive one of man's most uncomfortable sensations.

There are some support groups on facebook and elsewhere that have thousands of people with akathisia. I try not to go on too much because it can depress me to reckon with widespread suffering. But it can be a helpful tool -- one is called "akathisia - understanding and seeking answers," another is "Living with Akathisia."

But it has been two years since your post. Maybe you are better by now. I hope.

      Cheers,

      bhe

I had this as a teen due to abilify. Scariest thing ever nearly fell down a flight of staris. Got it a year ago from Latuda but was very minor.  Now for the last week I've had the worst case due to a new drug called Vraylor.  I've been miserable and had to be put on propranoal to calm it down which I am not happy about.  I start work in two weeks and I've got this crap going on.

Yes my husband who has Alzheimer's got it while being treats with Haldoperidol an antipsychotic drug. He is being weaned off the drug but still has anesthesia. I am wondering how long it will take as he keeps losing weight. Lost 40 lbs in 6 mos.any antipsychotic drug is get very dangerous. Will erase your memory and do a chemical lobotomy on you. Do not ever allow any psych to give to you or loved one. I have read large doses of B6 will get rid of anesthesia. Google it.

Medication unduced akathiia is a open secret that the psychiatric dotors and system refuses to acknowlege. Med induced akathisia is a cloak word to sell and push more psych drugs by big pharmauceutical. Many lawsuits are forming because this severe restlessness ,anxiety can and has caused persons to become exhausted ,violent, suicidal, and homicidal. Many mass shootings making national headlines are slowly being found out to be caused by medication induced akathisia.I was removed ,asked to be removed from psych drugs due to akathisia. Google akathisia and violence and read up. Expose this bad medicine and attempt to put your name on a class action lawsuit. Get off the meds slow,

I have a complex medical history which includes intestinal failure so was put onto a syringe driver with cyclizine ( anti emetic ) to help with nausea and vomiting. I developed severe akathisia and Parkinsonism from this drug and after a year of stopping it I still have constant symptoms including the internal restless, respiratory grunting , rigidity, pacing , rocking etc .

I have seen a neurologist who didn’t understand it and basically said it will go and a psychiatrist who doesn’t understand and wants to treat it with anti psychotics .

I am at my wits end I can’t cope living like this . Although my symptoms are less severe and I am able to sleep they are still horrendous. I am worn out physically and mentally. I need a dr who understands and has the knowledge to treat me . For the first few months I literally didn’t sleep only the odd hour , I was then given lorazepam which did enable me to sleep .

Can anyone recommend a dr in S Wales / UK.

I can cope with my feeding tubes, stoma bags etc but I can’t cope with these awful symptoms.

Has anyone here had tardive akathisia and Parkinsonism that has persisted like mine ?

Yes there are cases like yours. I'm sorry to hear it.

Try survivingantidepressants.org for doctor recommendations or ask in the Living with Akathisia facebook group.

      How're you doing nowadays?

Tardive dyskinesia and neck dystonia --- from anti-psychotics, esp. Geodone.

I have severe pain at end of day .... apparently just from holding my head up!

Tell me what   akathisia is (symptoms).

    I take Citalopram too.
