Has anyone experience from TERP surgery

I've been told that I require surgery to  improve flow through my prostate and hospital have recommended TERP but it is evasive and I believe it has lots of side affects so I am looking for anyone who has positive or negative experience and whether anyone has any experience of more non evasive form of treatment like PAE

I would try anything but invasive surgery .I had the TURP and it was the biggest mistake I've made in my life. I warn everybody not to do it as after the TURP my climax is non-existent .

    Dear Mickyclicky,

I had my PAE procedure in Lisbon under Prof. Pisco in July 2016. Since then my BPH symptoms improved dramatically and now I am doing very well. So far, I have undergone regular progress check ups for 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year, which showed quite impressive improvements. Before the PAE, my Urologist recommended me to undergo an immediate prostatectomy. Then, I began reading the adverse impacts of prostatectomy and hesitated to undergo as recommended by the Urologist. Instead, I began browsing in the internet for any better procedure and accidentally got information on PAE. By then, I was not aware of the presence of this patient info site. I got information about it only after my PAE procedure. So far, the PAE worked very well in my case, which is not evasive at all compared to prostatectomy.

    With all best wishes.

      Hi WSAD

That's very encouraging and having the positive feed back helps support my case  for  obtaining a referral from my Urology consultant to move away from TURP and look at one of the alternative non invasive solutions . Glad PAE is working for you and long may it continue

I had the TURP operation 7 years ago at the age of 63. I was needing to pee so frequently that something had to be done, I had been on alpha blockers for 4 or 5 years but they did not help. People I spoke to said it was straightforward and they were in hospital for a couple of days, but I was in for a week and had to use TENA pads for 4 months after the op, and it took almost a year to recover completely (unable to use urinals, had to pull down my pants and trousers in order to pee). After that I was pleased with the results; peeing and its frequency is no problem. A couple of older friends mentioned that it was the final nail in the coffin of their sex lives, but I find now that thanks to viagra and my helpful wife things are good in that area! Of course, medicine is not a precise science and we are all different. Good luck.

Yes, be very careful about TURP and do not be pressured into having it without more thought and discussion. There are alternatives. Consider whether RE is important to you. A urodynamics test is useful if you can afford it as it tests the muscle strength in the bladder. I used self insert catheters for a while and hated it. I had a supra-pubic catheter for 3 months and that was fine. What size is your prostate as that affects the best operation. Where is the focus of your sepsis? Why does the uro think a TURP will help; seems strange to me? Is he guessing? I would check with another uro if you can. I had a HoLEP which was 100% fine apart from the expected RE but I had a very large prostate.

    Hi Micky,

Is the hospital you are at offering just the standard Turp or are they performing the Bipolar (or Button) version.  This seems to be a better option than the standard Turp and I hope you can research it in your list of options.

As others have said, don't be pushed into making a rushed decision.

      Many thanks Michael
