Has anyone experienced abdominal pains after having their appendix removed?

Hi,

I had my appendix removed November 2012, and ever since then I've experienced abdominal pains, more often than not as bad as the pain was before surgery.

I'd never had abdominal pains before and it came in really quickly. I was experiencing pain for about a week before it got so bad I couldn't eat, sleep, and hardly walk. I went to a&e, the doctor seemed as though he was doubting the amount of pain I was in, until he pressed on the right side of my stomach and I burst into tears. I had surgery the next day, and spent 3 days in hospital after (only because I couldn't pass urine/bowel movement, apparently they can't let you out until you do).

After recovering from surgery, I used to only get pain every now and then. But over the past 6 months, the pain has been getting a lot worse and constant.

I've been to see my doctor, who thinks I now have IBS. They haven't done any tests at the moment to rule anything else out, they've just tried me on tables that are to treat IBS, with no effect.

I'm going to demand some tests are done just to make sure there isn't an underlying cause.

The thing that really makes me think if it's something to do with my appendix, is when I'm lead down, the right side of my stomach hurts like someone is pushing down as far as they can go.

I just want to know if anyone else has experienced similar pain after having their appendix removed and if so, have you found the cause?

My friend had the same surgery a few weeks before me, and has been diagnosed with IBS (they have rules everything else out). I don't know if this is a common thing in patients after this surgery.

Thanks for any help!

Becky!  I am from the states and had chronoc appendicitis for over a year before I had emergency laproscopic surgery performed nov 2013 without complications...however since jan 2014 I feel pressure on my right side where my appendix used to be and it's a feeling of discomfort all the time when sitting or bend over ...like a tighness that's hard to describe.  I hane occasionally felt a shaft grap or have cramps I. the same area but by no means constant or the tyoe of oain I did before my surgery.  I am going to the doctors now awaiting blood tests and ultrasound I am getting this am but he have me a look like I'm crazy because he palates my abdomen without causing pain rules out gallbladder and have me some pills for ibs.  just wondering if you found out anything more in the months since your posting and any tips?  I have researched a massage technique called visceral manipulation and myofascial release may be benifitial.  I hane also noticed changes in my digestion perhaps since the appendix provided good bacterial to my intestines which it's not getting anymore so I may buy a probiotic.  I also have yellowish tan stool May or may not be associated but you tell a doctor that at they immediately assume gallbladder or liver problems.  please let me know how hinge are currently going for you

    sincerely

I had my appendix removed 18 days ago. I have EXACTALLY the same symptoms. I started a probiotic that is helping a lot with digestive problems. I am left with a sharp pulling pain where my appendix used to be. My Dr didn't seem to worried. I've seen him a couple times now since surgery. Makes it hard to lift my right leg its so painful. My stool is also light/yellowish. I attribute that to that all of the good flora in my intestine was knocked out when they gave me antibiotics during surgery. Bought the best probiotic I could find. Its helping. But not helping this Appendix pain. Please let me know if you had an outcome...

Hi- I am another person from the states with lower right side pain following an appendectomy.  I found this article online that has some intersting info, but a dry read.  http://ispub.com/IJGE/9/1/4492    It's a case study of people who had complications and pain following their appendectomy.  I had my appendix out in 2011 and about 2.6 years later the pain started.  I think I possibly irritated the surgical area by doing too much yoga.  But, I should be able to do yoga with out this nagging pain in my side.  My pain is a burning, sometimes sharp, sometimes dull, ache and or throb.  It's hard to describe this to doctors.  I have been diagnosed with IBS several times for several complaints, including this one. I was given pills and colonoscopy.  Right now I am pushing for an MRI, but no doctor wants to order that for me yet.  Glad to see I am not nutz and alone  razz

    Hi all,

i had my appendix removed laparoscopically in June this year and have had nothing but problems and pain since. Drs were initially unsure if I had appendicitis, as other than severe pain and vomiting, my obs were almost ok, they decided to operate and if nothing was wrong with my ovaries etc they would assume it was my appendix and remove it. It was inflamed and when they sent it for analysis it was definitely infected. I had it out in the middle of the night and felt absolutely fine afterwards and actually went home the same day.  Unfortunately since then I've been re-admitted 6 times with lower right abdominal pain and my bowel is unable to empty properly (I have had IBS for years but never as severe symptoms as I currently have).  The Drs have X-rayed me, scanned me, performed colonoscopies and keep saying nothing majorly obvious wrong, other than my bowel not functioning as it should.  I'm obviously delighted there's nothing major wrong, but it doesn't help with the fact I'm still in more pain than I was before I had my appendix out 4 months ago.  I'm currently seeing a colorectal surgeon, gastroenterologist and dietician who has put me on a low FODMAP diet which has helped with some of the IBS symptoms.  Just feeling like I'm not getting better, but worse and that I keep getting handed stronger pain relief which then has a negative effect on my bowel function and I end up with both appendix site pain and severe IBS pain.  Has anyone else had this kind of reaction following an appendectomy? I feel like I'm running out of options and can't financially afford to keep being signed off! Hopefully someone might have suggestions of things I can try-thank you! wink

    Hi Shelley and Becky Louise

i just wondered if you have any answers to your abdominal pain? I have recently had an op to remove adhesions following a hysterectomy three years ago plus my right Fallopian tube and ovary as they had become covered in adhesions and formed an abscess behind. While the surgeon was in there he took my healthy appendix too. I had agreed to this before the op as I was told that they suspected my appendix had burst previously but did a good job of walling itself off preventing widespread infection. Anyway, since the op 6 weeks ago, I keep getting a sharp pain from where my appendix used to be. I'm wondering if all this discomfort is from adhesions. I know from experience what a pain adhesions can be. Have either of you been told your pain could be due to this?

Hi, not really been getting much further with the drs I'm afraid! Still having a lot of bowel issues and pain. Waiting to speak with Chronic pain team for some support coping with the constant pain, especially with the difficulties i have when using pain relief ;( when I had my initial consultation with chronic pain team they made a comment about it being quite likely that I had scar tissue which might be causing some of the pain! I'm starting to feel like no one seems to be willing to do anything to help when I try and explain how much pain I'm in and how much the bowel issues are controlling my life ;( I basicalky haven't worked since June and I'm not sure how much more my work are going to put up with! Thanks for getting in touch and sharing your experience-may be worth mentioning to my gp to see if he thinks that could have anything to do with it x

I too have this same pain. Haven't found a solution yet. What do adhesions feel like?

Hello Shelley, I just typed a reply to your post and then lost it (unless it appears suddenly).....anyway, I am sorry to hear that you are in so much discomfort and that this has been going on since June! I too was experiencing lots of discomfort and my bowels were all over the place. I had 3 MRI scans, 1 CT, 3 abdominal ultrasounds, 3 internal scans and only one of these showed up anything which was a suspected fistula. I then had a laparoscopy where it was confirmed there was no fistula but there were adhesions which were released. Following the release of the adhesions I felt so much better and my bowels went back to normal. But then I had to have a laparotomy as I developed an abscess in my pelvis and this is when my healthy appendix was also removed, hence the pain that I am feeling now which I believe is over where my appendix was. As I have had adhesions before and know how much discomfort they can cause and bowel problems, I have decided that once I have healed from this latest surgery, I am going to try yoga and deep tissue massage as I have heard both can help with adhesions/scar tissue. I just feel anything is worth a try. Would you be willing to have a laparotomy if scans don't show up anything? I know adhesions can wrap around the bowel (mine had) and this is what can cause problems. I often regret having my hysterectomy now 3 years ago as I am sure that had I not had this, adhesions would not have formed in the first place. I believe the pain from my uterus due to Adenomyosis was not as bad as what I am going through and what I have gone through over the past year. I hope you find a treatable reason soon for the pain and discomfort you are going through but I would definitely ask your medics to consider if the pain and bowel issues you are experiencing could be due to adhesion formation. Wishing you all the best and I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

    Sorry I haven't replied in a while.

Finally had some progress on my stomach troubles. On Friday I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, so currently waiting for an appointment with my consultant to discuss medication.

Haven't really taken it all in yet. I'm glad I've got a diagnosis, but at the same time, I'm shocked this is the result.

Apparently it's very mild at the moment, but doctors are unsure how it will progress, or if I will react well to medication.

Hope your all feeling better or at least having more luck in finding what it wrong.

    All the best.

      Hi Becky,

I had my appendix out 2 years ago and ever since have had trouble too! Doctors are not sure what it could be that's causing pain and bowel symptoms, keep saying it's ibs but I'm not convinced, and now they're not sure whether it could be a cyst or something to be with ovaries or something like Crohn's. Had an ultrasound, didn't show anything abnormal, had an MRI 2 weeks ago and now awaiting the results, I actually do hope they've found the problem as at least I can start to get better! It's so frustrating! How did they reach your diagnosis? Did you have to have a scan like mri etc? and how long did results take?

I know this is a few months ago now. I also did not read all of the messages on this thread and perhaps this was already mentioned. In case not, have you ever considered if this is just an allergy/intolerance to wheat? Or celiac disease? The symptoms are very similar making a diagnosis tricky. Just something to consider and there is no harm in trying removing wheat/gluten from your diet for a little while to see if it helps.
