Has anyone felt worse before they felt better with vitamin D deficiency

Hello. I started out with a level of 18.11 3 months ago. For a month and a half I took d2 weekly before I found this forum and the Facebook groups. I’ve been taking D3 daily for 6-7 weeks now and I was starting to feel better. Some of the symptoms went away but now it feel like I’m getting worse. My levels were check Monday and they are up to 45.58 but I k ow that’s still low. Just wish I knew how long this would take. I’ve had my calcium and magnesium checked my thyroid and parathyroid, MRIs ctscans and all kinds of bloodwork and X-rays. Everything is normal. B22 is good. The only bloodwork I don’t have back is my vitamin A,E and B1. I’ll have it this week. By can anyone say how long this will and if ya normal to feel worse and hurt more before you get better?

Low vit D is not always the CAUSE of the symptoms. Low vit D can also be a sign that you have something else going on, often an autoimmune disorder. If it is your GP/PCP who has done the tests they may not be experienced enough in the autoimmune field to identify the problem. Usually rheumatologists specialise in this field.
It can often take a few months to feel better - and having a low vit D doesn't always mean having symptoms. My husband had a level of 7 and had no symptoms at all. Get your vit D checked again and if it is "normal" ask for a referral.

Sorry - it wasn't meant to be rude.
It took 5 years for my autoimmune disorder to be identified. So I know where you are coming from.

I'm having the same problem. Mine is a 14 and I was placed on 50,0000 of D2 for 12 weeks.
After reading the reviews and being a part of the support groups, I now found out that the two he’s not doing anything. I’m five weeks into this and I’m a mess.. I am starting D3 with K 2 daily. The pain is so bad I can hardly walk, and I think my blood sugar is dipping at night.

Why do you think you blood sugar is dropping at night?

I'm on roughly the same timeline of the journey as you. roughly 7 weeks ago I found out I was 32nmol/l (11ng/ml). I started taking 8000iu d3 a day with k2 and magnesium. I felt better in the first couple of weeks (I never really had the pain symptoms with my low D, but fatigue and dizziness were bad), but have been feeling very tired this past couple of weeks. I'm thinking it might be because I added magnesium glycinate. or maybe just working through the deficiency. we've just got to keep on keeping on and trust we will be better in the next few months

My symptoms began several months ago with some IBS like symptoms I was experiencing. It got so bad I ended up in the emergency room with abdominal pain. They did an exam and blood work and everything appeared to be normal. They did tests on my gallbladder, kidneys, and liver all of which came back normal as well. I was referred to a gastroenterologist who did an endoscopy. They checked for ulcers and so on. They took biopsies of my stomach lining and and small intestine and those came back normal as well. I had an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound which found nothing abnormal. It was suggested that I try giving up dairy I could be lactose intolerant and since doing so I do feel better and I thought I was going to be fine until I started experiencing fatigue I never experienced before and I was unable to concentrate and muscle weakness. It was hard for me to put thoughts together or find the words I wanted to use when speaking which made work difficult I’m a medical biller. I couldn’t find the energy to keep up with the housework it seemed like work took everything out of me which is unusual I don’t have a physically demanding job and I work from home. Doing physical activities seems to take allot out of me as well I used to go hiking every weekend and lifted weights regularly and now hauling a trunk load of groceries took allot out of me and the simplest of things would cause me to be winded such as taking the laundry from the basement to my upstairs bedroom which never happened prior. I scheduled an appointment with my pcp who took more tests to rule out any infections those came back normal and I was tested for asthma too which I do not have. I just wanted to lay around all day and accomplished nothing. It’s hard to explain to people how you feel because nothing physically appears to be wrong but I knew something felt off but my physician or myself couldn’t pinpoint what was happening. About a month of this goes by with no improvement and I started developing pain in my hips, back, shoulders, and knees. I didn’t have a fall or injury and I couldn’t explain what was causing this pain. I went back to the doctors they did an exam and I felt like every time I went back I had another symptom and they would focus on that. I had ct scans, and mri again everything appeared to be normal. I felt that something within me was off so I asked if they could run my vitamin levels after doing my own research allot of what I was experiencing could be a deficiency of some sort. I just didn’t know what. Everything came back within a normal range except my vitamin D. Which really wasn’t low enough to be called a true deficiency it was just considered low. I tested at a level 28. My physician explained everyone is different some individuals who are extremely deficiency my not experience any symptoms at all, or someone like myself could be a little low and experience the broad range of symptoms like Ive been having. I started at 2000iu per day and for the first few weeks I felt like I was starting to feel better I had more energy and my anxiety felt more manageable I was able to do more. Then I started to feel worse in my muscles and it felt like my bones started to ache. Especially in my chest, ribs, and back. In my chest my sternum felt tender to the touch and I had a dull ache under my breast that sometimes went under my arms. I was terrified about what was going on and my anxiety got worse just thinking about it. Of course I go to the doctors and they run more tests which come back normal and I was tested for any autoimmune disorders. Those came back within the normal range. They ran tests for lupus, celiac, MS, and RA and they can’t pinpoint anything wrong. They’ve referred me to a rheumatologist for follow up I guess we’ll wait and see what they have to say. I just wanted to share my story and what I’ve gone through over these lasts few months. When I think back on everything I’ve experienced it’s hard for me to fathom that clinically speaking I appear to be perfectly healthy aside from the low vitamin d. I feel like everything I experienced was discredited or did my anxiety imagine it all the aches and pains, the exhaustion, heart palpitations and dizziness? From my own research it appears to be a slow process to recovery from low D levels and finding the range that works for your body can take time. From other forums I’ve read other people have experienced a painful recovery and overall they appeared to get worse before getting better it. I began to also supplement with mg daily and I’ve felt better since doing so. Some days are better than others and if I push myself because I feel good I feel it for days. I’m gonna continue to think positively. I take things as they come and I’m thankful that after everything there isn’t something seriously wrong. Hope this helps someone who has gone through something similar.

Have you had a calcium done? If you have low vitamin D and high calcium (or even high normal), you probably have primary hyperparathyroidism and vitamin D will make it worse (raise your calcium levels).

28 is still low and I wonder if individuals who have been low for a long time are more likely to have symptoms. I would think so.
I'm in a similar boat. I tested 23 ng/ml in June, 6 years ago, but I didnt understand the importance of vitamin D and continual dosing.
After years of progressively worsening health, I got my vitamin D tested just the week: 26. And that's walking to work 4 days a week, in August, after taking high doses of D3 for 3 days.
I've gotten pretty much everything ruled out, my thyroids seem fine, so this is a bit of a last straw for me. I will see if in the coming weeks I can get my life back.
Today is day 6 of taking 12,000 IU D3, and I want to say I feel a bit better. I still don't feel great and it could be in my head or coincidental, but here's to looking up.

hi, i created an account just so I could reply to you. Your symptoms are so similar to mine, I felt like I've typed this reply! The only difference is that I had some muscle aches and nerve pain that started below the arm and my doctor suggested that I test for D and B12. Turned out I'm deficient in both but D was at 5.6! Now I'm on meds but the pain has gotten worse despite feeling better initially. I'm also hoping everything turns out well.
Also, do you feel better now? I see you've posted 12 months ago.
Take care.

This. Is. Me. I thought i had early
onset dementia or MS or leukemia. turns out that my body doesn't like 10+ years of low Vitamin D. It seems to have finally caught up with me hard core over the past 12-18 months but ive tested in the 20s for a decade. My doctor has never prescribed anything to address this and when my designer vitamins ran out 18 months back I didn't replace them with anything. things came to a head this year with extensive joint pain, flexibility issues, memory and concentration issues (I also had a hard time handling my job and used all my energy on that).
i just came to see if anyone felt worse before they felt better (i did actually feel a hum in my body from the very first dose of Centrum Silver and i felt great for a week). im attributing things to a reversal of my symptoms and am feeling like im going back through them in reverse. currently noticing tennis elbows pain but expecting it will pass as i continue to build up my calcium and D.

Thank you for writing about your experience. I haven't been through everything you have but was recently diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency following a sudden onset of illness. When I had previously seen healthcare professionals they all told me I was suffering from an acute anxiety episode but this did not seem to be right and after insisting on a face to face consultation with my GP he arranged extensive blood tests. Everything reported as normal apart from my vitamin D levels and he suggested that I take a supplement for the next 3 months. Up to a couple of months ago I was very active, walked a lot, used my Peloton 4-5 times a week and had no problem fulfilling my full-time job and chores around my home. Over the past 5 weeks I struggle just to get through the day due to the fatigue. I understand that it takes 7 days of taking a supplement before the body can convert to a form it can use then around 4-6 weeks before you start to feel any benefit and have now added a magnesium supplement as this works well with vitamin D3. Some days are better than others but from thinking you are perfectly fit and healthy and suddenly barely able to get out if bed is quite terrifying. I believe that a full recovery is the norm but it is a slow process so I am trying to be kind to myself by try to rest and recuperate when I need to.
