Has anyone gotten their hernia mesh removed?

Posted , 51 users are following.

I'm finding it really hard to find actual people to discuss how they've recovered after having a mesh removed.

I had an umbilical hernia. They inserted a 10x5 cm mesh in me, and it has ruined my life.

I'm going to have it removed but it all sounds a bit dangerous.

I want to find ANYONE that's had theirs removed and how the healing and recovery went?

It would be a godsend to find someone else.

Thanks,

-Justin-

Hey there Justin. How long was your recovery after they removed the mesh. Also, did you have a neurectomy?

      hey Dan

It was a lot quicker recovery than my initial mesh surgery. If i remember correctly I was in the hospital for maybe three days then recovered at home for a week and a half to fully feel better.

I don't know what a neurectomy is... does it have something to do with nerves? I didn't have that done.

It's very important to find a surgeon who has done it several times. It's a complicated procedure. I traveled a distance to find the right person. GOOD LUCK!

I just had a consultation with a good hernia surgeon. I am still at week four, a lot of pain, and not improving. The surgeon wont remove the mesh until 3 months. In your research, does that sound right?

Makes sense. All the best for a speedy recovery!

One more question - What type of hernia repair did the surgeon do after he removed your mesh?

I'm in UK.. had inguinal hernia mesh removed 3 and half weeks ago... making good progress... only some incision pain if I move too quick... told not to lift anything heavy for 6 weeks. Went back to work after 2 weeks (desk job) ... but didn't drive for 4 weeks... glad to have that horrible plastic mesh out of me.

Awesome! Glad it worked out for you. If you don't mind me asking who did you go to and where for the operation?

Hi! I had my surgery with Professor Sheen..... Manchester Royal infirmary.... he also does private at ALEXANDER HOSPITAL in South Manchester. I also think he does some work London way, but it sure where exactly. He is great, he looks after professional footballers etc.

Hi Good to hear you had the mesh removed ok! what type of mesh did Ali Sheen remove and what size was the mesh?

I have 32 cm x 16cm of mesh secured by 7 titanium tacks an in constant pain waiting to have the tacks and potential mesh removed by Professor Sheen! just finding it difficult to get a testimony/feedback from patients who have had it removed.

    Would appreciate your thoughts!?

You'll have to ask @smigger15. I had a different type of mesh removed. Best thing I ever did though.

Hi Alan... it was me that had mesh removal by Prof Sheen.... it was polypropylene mesh... not sure of size.. I'll be getting that information when I see him for my follow up appt. He's a very skilled & talented surgeon... he's also very honest.. if it's not do-able or will cause you further discomfort he won't do it. I think he's brilliant... he also looks after professional athletes & PL footballers so he must be highly thought of. Are you NHS or private?

Hi, I have seen him at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The mesh is inguinal and I have been waiting 1year on waiting list really worried I could be worse after the surgery. How are you getting on? Take it easy give it chance to heal well, that's really important Prof Sheen told me.

Hi Alan.... I requested to go on his cancellation list.. I was done & dusted in 4 months.... get on to them & ask can you be put on it. They give me one weeks notice. I'm doing OK at the moment... I had to go back to work after 2 weeks for financial reasons... wish I could of stayed off longer.. My incision has healed up nicely.. just a bit sore in the centre.. think that's were the cut was most deepest and where he's repaired the original hernia though. I was in quite a lot of pain for the first 10 days... but it gets less daily. Good luck... let me know how you get on... 😊👍

Hi Al... so glad you contacted him... if secretary hasn't got back to you soon, give her another call... she may be on holiday... she will definitely get back to you. I hope he can help you. 😊 I'm now 6 weeks post op.. 100% mesh free.. 😁 Doing fine thank you... they actually find nerves entrapped in my mesh, no wonder I had horrible groin pain for 2 years.. Now just dealing back pain (not mesh related) it's disc & sciatic pain.... will get there eventually... lol... Good luck 🤞 let me know how you get on... 😊
