Has anyone with health anxiety had cbt?

Hi I am waiting for a appointment to start cbt as I have bad health anxiety. The doc has put me on fluoxetine Im worried about taken them and being dependent on them and not to mention the horror stories of bad anxiety as a side effect! Has anyone tried cbt and found it useful? And the meds do they work?

I have had cbt in the past but that was for anxiety over my son. I am waiting to have it again for my health anxiety.

When i had it a few years ago i was obsessed something would happen to my son and wouldnt let him out of my sight. I now let him play out, walk home from school and go places with his friends. Some days i still struggle but i have learnt through CBT to overcome my anxiety more with my son.

So yea i found it useful and my son is so much happier.

Thats exactly what i used to do !!! The thing is i was only making my son resent me. It wasnt until i started the CBT that i actually realised how bad i was. My son is so much more happier now.

I am still not as laid back as other parents but i have improved massively. It has also helped because he goes to secondary in sept and thats giving me a breakdown at the minute.

I've used and continue to use CBT as my primary coping mechanism and supplement it with other therapeutic activities (running, hiking, writing, walking, music, etc). It mostly works for me which is why I have to supplement it with something else. Meds do work but it's different for everyone. You just need to find one that works. I personally do not like them because of the side effects and the dependency. I have gone to see a nutritionist for alternative medicinal options. Sometimes, medicine is necessary though, you just have to weigh your options.

I totally agree with what Allison says. Meds arre indeed different for every person, and even if you're not keen on taking them, they are usually of benefit till you get back on your feet - then you get going with the other therapeutic activities - or continue them if you've already started. Music and writing helped me most.

      Hi Allison

I have tried herbal remedies hypno didn't think they helped so hard not to be negative. I think if I start a low dose side effects wouldn't be as bad it's horrible feeling like this

I didn't use herbal remedies. Your body is normally affected by anxiety, depression, etc so my nutritionist does this testing and gives me supplements/vitamins to help give those downed (or overdriven) systems a boost to work normally. I had no response to supplements like melatonin or valerian or St. Johns Wort. Just like meds, other forms of therapy doesn't work for everyone the same as well. If you feel like you need a "running start", I would take medicine, I had to do that once as well.

I know what it feels like to feel down and negative and feel like you can't do anything about it. You just have to stay strong and push through. I still have anxiety and depression after about 4 years of actively dealing with it, I had an episode early this morning. It does suck but it's a part of my life, sure I'd like not to have it but right now, it's a very real part of my life and I just have to deal with it.

      Hi Allison

Sorry to hear you had an episode this morning it really does suck!! I'm just at that point where I'm accepting it is anxiety and I defo need a push start, I suppose it never disappears completly we just have to learn to manage it 😫

It did suck. Had to pull myself together and use eye drops to get rid of the redness in my eyes from crying. Yeah, I'm not sure if we can ever be rid of anxiety or other mental illnesses, you just get better managing the symptoms as time goes but even now as you see, there are still those times that are exceptionally harder. Acceptance makes it easier, trying to fight it exerts a lot of energy.
