Have antacids given me IBS?

Hello, so around 3 months ago I started excessivly using RENNE to cure my nervous tummy caused by anxiety, little did I know that renne would give me very bad constipation and ended up making my upset tummy even worse! Ever since I overcome that constipation and ditched the renne, I've had a burning feeling in my tummy and lower abdomen (more so my lower abdomen). Around a month a go I decided to see my doctor and I was perscribed omeprazole, which again lead to horrible, painful constipation. For the time I was on them it did cure the burning feeling.

Right now, I still have the burning feeling - it's uncomfortable but goes away once I've eaten. My bowel movements are pretty regualr and stools are normal but this burning feeling is really starting to bother me and I hope it doesn't get worse - and I really hope it's not IBS or something. I'm starting to think that maybe taking all the antacids is what's caused the burning feeling in the first place? I'm not sure wether to just see if it clears up on it's own? I don't want to be perscribed more antacids if it's just making it worse.

I'm also not sure if stress and anxiety is making all of this worse? I am seeking help for that though.

Hi Louise. Dont forget that any medication you get for stress or anxiety can affect and give side effects such as nausea, shaking, dizziness, depression etc.

I'm not on any medication for it, I don't think I will take it either as I am worried about side effects.

My doctor said I might be able to get counselling, he gave me a number to call which I did and they are going to call me back on Thursday for a mental health assesment - after that I think I then might (or might not) be referred to a counsellor.

Interestingly, what is known as 'acid indigestion' is caused by not enough aciid in the stomach often caused by taking antacids. There isn't enough acid to digest the food in it and it passes undigested into the intestines...which causes a host of other problems.

Barb wrote yesterday to say that apple cider vinegar (1 tsp - 1TBSP) in a glass of water stopped her acid indigestion. Lately I have been taking a lot of antacids, even in the night when it comes back up into my esophagus. Today I started the apple cider vinegar treatment...and normally I'd be popping the antacids by now. Strangely my insides feel really good where normally after a meal, even a small one, I feel bloated. I told Barb I would get back to her to confirm in a few days whether the apple cider vinegar continues to work. It might be worth a try.

Thank you. I will give that go! I've been off the antacids for a week or two now and last night the burning sensation was in my throat right down to my belly, I had a small amount of milk which stopped the burning so I could go to sleep. I woke up this morning with no pain but it usually starts around lunch time anyway.

I will try the acv, if it works I hope it doesn't return after I stop using it :s

Hi Louise., The reason people take acv is because of the acid versus alkaline theory, there are other things you can take too for the same effect, just look up on google things that are high in alkaline and you have your list and might have some in your home already. But it does not change the problem. IF you have a damaged splincter or ibs or wwhatever that will still be there. I tend to think that as you get it worse midday it is less likely to be acid reflux or gerd or whatever because that is usually worse at night or first thing. There may also be a chance that you have simply taken too many antacids and sort of temporarily poisoned your body and they need to be flushed out to get back to normal or you are allergic and react badly to them. But why were you taking them in the first place? Even if they work they only paper over the cracks and do not cure a problem.

I started taking renne because I suffer from anxiety which gives me a nervous tummy (no burning, just butterflies) and it seemed to work, but as the anxiety got worse the more I took, and then it made it very hard to pass any stools. After I ditched the Rennes I started to get the burning feeling and I went to see a doc, I was tested for an ulcer but there wasn't one there but I was percrived omeprazole anyway which again really badly effected my BMs. Now I've come off those and the burning feeling is still present but BMs are normal.

Think taking one now and then is ok, same as with anything, but when it is all of the time it just changes it to a different problem eventually. You can easily do something about the stools by eating laxative foods.

My bowel movements are fine now, but taking antacids and ppis really effects them which is why I've stopped taking them. However the burning in my tummy is back and I'm not sure what I can do to stop it and I'm worried that the Rennes and omprezole have done some permanent damage or if it will go away on it's own.

Louise, I found this site to be helpful much more than others. The writer sounds like a bit of a redneck, rabblerouser type but a lot of what he says seems to make sense. After my first day of taking apple cider vinegar, my reflux/burning sensation was almost gone...but I experienced an overall feeling of wellness throughout not just my digestive system but somehow in my breathing and overall. I am quite excited to continue with the apple cider vinegar today and to see how I get on. I realize I have to reduce portion size to avoid GERD/reflux/burning. And I should avoid spicy foods (which I love!...) and of course, not eating before bed. You lie down and the undigested food and liquid pushes back up through the sphincter and burns. Not pleasant. I do want to avoid the antacids. I know they interfere with B12 absorption but reading more on it, I see antacids cause more issues than they temporarily resolve. It's all about informing oneself and using common sense and trial and error....and picking up info from forums such as this one.

Always check the side effects of any medicine you take. Remember also that doctors did not study drugs in medical school as pharmacists do. Sure, they touch on it just as they touch on nutrition but they are not experts. Pharmacists are. What doctors know aobut drugs is largely what the drug company rep tells them or what they read from the drug company literature.

Personally, with borderline blood pressure issues, I could not take omeprazole because it is high in sodium which drives up blood pressure.

This appple cider vinegar is just what the doctor DIDN'T order...

This quote is from MedicineNet dot com: Omeprazole like other PPIs is well-tolerated. The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches, rash and dizziness. Nervousness, abnormal heartbeat, muscle pain, weakness, leg cramps, and water retention occur infrequently.

Each packet of Zegerid powder for oral suspension contains 460 mg of sodium and each capsule contains 304 mg of sodium. This should be taken into consideration in patients who need a sodium restricted diet.

High doses and long-term use (1 year or longer) may increase the risk ofosteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist, or spine. Therefore, it is important to use the lowest doses and shortest duration of treatment necessary for the condition being treated.

The rennes and omprezole are unlikely to have dome PERMANENT damage. If you took them for a long time and lots of them they may have done some but it would be repairable. If you dont take ppis then you have to change your diet and lifestyle dramatically and / or take acv and other things instead.

My doctor gave me omeprazole yesterday, will try to avoid taking them as often such things give me awful headaches that I cannot stand. Am sticking with cimetidine for now as at least that doesnt do that. I know what you mean about the doctors having no knowledge about nutrution etc, but most people just blindly follow whatever their doctor says and assume they know everythign and never make mistakes. Even if the doctor gives them something that makes them feel terrible they carry on taking it! RIDICULOUS.

I always find I long to eat a meal before I go to bed and find it hard to resist it, always regret it after.

I'm going to change my diet from now on, I'm going to eat a lot less cheese and fatty foods and see how I get on with that, if that fails, I will try the acv. And if that fails, back to the doctors!

      Hi Louise,

Might I suggest that you focus on what you CAN eat...as well as what you are eliminating from your diet? After all you have to replace fatty foods and cheese with something. The NHS recommends 6 - 10 servings of frsh fruit and veggies per day. How about starting off your day with a lovely pink smoothie? Throw fresh strawberries into the blender and 1/4 of a ripe banana and add almond milk and voila...a beautiful and nutritious smoothie. You will feel so good about a healthy start to your day...and you will have 3 servings of fruit under your belt. Your insides will rejoice! Even if the burning doesn't stop (and of course it just might...)...you will be doing so much good increasing your fruit, vegetable and roughage.

Lunch suggestion: a big, delicious salad of dark greens (no iceberg) tomato, beets, cabbage...any veg you like plus protein such as hard boiled egg or chicken pieces. Add bread or pita or whatever suits you. Increase your water intake if it's not enough. I have taken apple cider vinegar for two days now a half hour before meals with surprising results. Good luck!

      Hi Louise,

i have  just tried to change my diet I have gone gluten free to see what happens,I cannot take smoothies or lot of salad ,also ripe bananas can make you loose very good if you are constipated and a firm one for diarhea.

If you do get very loose peanut butter on toast if you have bread and not allergic to nuts.and the old cranberry juice to keep your bladder the cordial not the juice in a carton. That is of cause for some not all and not telling you to do it.

      good Luck

Hey there, I've been vegetarian for a couple of years now so I do eat a lot of cheese, so I've decided I might start including fish in my diet just so I can swap the cheese filled sandwiches and halloumi salads for some nice steamed fish. That way I'll find the healthy eating a bit easier and not as limited. Plus, fish is good for you anyway smile

Today I had a bowl of bran flakes and felt fine, no acid feeling at all, and then I had once piece of brown bread and low fat spread with tomato soup, and I started to get the burning in my tummy sad And then I looked it up and tomoatoes are acidic so I should probably avoid soup, whoops!

I'm definately going to up my fruit and veg intake, I usually have around 2-3 portions a day anway but I will feel so much better about myself if I can double it. Might even help with my anxiety too smile

And the fish can help with your anxiety. Omega 3 (in fish and fish oils) is excellent for anxiety.

If you are vegetarian you must be replacing meat/eggs with plenty of nuts, seeds and legumes; lentils, chick peas, dried beans of all sorts....otherwise you would be protein deficient. I remember a story in the paper years ago about a convent of nuns who were experiencing anxiety and depression and other 'mental issues' and it was discovered that because they were vegetarian but NOT on a vegetarian diet of legumes/nuts/eggs to provide them with protein, it had affected their brains!  They put them on meat and they recovered. I am not suggesting you eat meat because your diet without it is far superior to that of us meat eaters. But you want to be sure you are not eating lots of bready foods as a replacement. You could also become anemic that way. Ask the doctor for a B12 test next time you see him. You can easily become deficient as you probably know.

So up the veggies and fruit, water, magnesium at bedtime and cut way back on all that constipating cheese. Good luck!

Have seen a lot of things about nuns having mental disorders but not because of their diet.
