Have antacids given me IBS?

Hello, so around 3 months ago I started excessivly using RENNE to cure my nervous tummy caused by anxiety, little did I know that renne would give me very bad constipation and ended up making my upset tummy even worse! Ever since I overcome that constipation and ditched the renne, I've had a burning feeling in my tummy and lower abdomen (more so my lower abdomen). Around a month a go I decided to see my doctor and I was perscribed omeprazole, which again lead to horrible, painful constipation. For the time I was on them it did cure the burning feeling.

Right now, I still have the burning feeling - it's uncomfortable but goes away once I've eaten. My bowel movements are pretty regualr and stools are normal but this burning feeling is really starting to bother me and I hope it doesn't get worse - and I really hope it's not IBS or something. I'm starting to think that maybe taking all the antacids is what's caused the burning feeling in the first place? I'm not sure wether to just see if it clears up on it's own? I don't want to be perscribed more antacids if it's just making it worse.

I'm also not sure if stress and anxiety is making all of this worse? I am seeking help for that though.

That's exactly what caused my stomach problems, ant acids, I had a little gastritis then I became dependent on them, I wish I could have come off them earlier would have saved me a lot of pain. Have a read about hyper acidity after ant acids, it is real. It can happen just weeks after you take them, personally I would see a dietician and get some real advice. If you have to take ant acid take ranitidine or zantac they are much milder than omeprazole. I would just try and perservear with your diet, I'm not sure how old you are but don't go down the road of ant acids if you can help it. I'm not surprised you started noticing you had more of a problem once you started taking them.

Hi. I have found using a PPI such as lansoprazole or ranitidine causes me problems with an anal itch which can be quite severe (not to mention embarrassing!). If I dont take the PPI I get quite bad discomfort from heartburn and need to use an over-the-counter antacid such as Renne!. Dilemma! Do I put up with the heartburn or the anal itch? any body got any suggestions?

      Hi Jane,

Over the past couple of weeks two remedies have surfaced and been tried by several posters who suffer from heartburn, reflux and bloating. Maurice suggested glutamine...which I myself am now taking to protect the lining of the gut. And Barb suggested apple cider vinegar; 1 TBSP in a full glass of water 20 - 30 minutes before a meal. It sounds counter-intuitive to drink something that is so bitter to remedy heartburn...but it works. And it works immediately. I have been taking it every day, before 2 of my 3 means and I am off antacids which I was popping like candy to keep the burning under control. As with all suggestions, do your own research on line at credible sites. Often these old fashioned remedies from the days of our grandmothers, such as cod liver oil (!) are the best. One thing Barb suggested because really apple cider vinegar is very bitter is to add stevia for sweetness. It made a big difference...but I still do drink the whole glass down in one fell swoop.

Yes, I agree with Carmel. Keep regular to get rid of anal itch. And keep clean. Prep H can help in the short term.

Thanks to Maurice and Barb for excellent suggestions. Good luck to you, Jane.

Do not suggest adding sweeteners. It makes it tastes better, but sweetners can bring on diabetes same as sugar can, the body reacts the same to it even though it has no calories. Acv does tastes horrible though.

Robin how is your bloating going now you off ant acids? I am coming off ranitidine at moment and am bloated out like a balloon. Must try apple cider vinegar at some point. Does it get better, I fear it will never end.
