dear Kim,
please don't worry. I have just had my second thyroidectomy and am now awaiting radioactive iodine to catch any cells left.
I had a small ? stroke last Autumn, was sent for an ultrasound and a lump was found. Just like that and out of the blue. I saw an endocrinologist and as I had worked with radiation he was on the alert. He did a needle biopsy ( didn't hurt) and referred me on to the surgeon because the lump was fairly big and vascular. i had noticed I was clearing my throat a lot and as a singer found the top note were a bit husky. The surgeon said it was too big and had to come out. No problem and very little discomfort, but the result came back as a papilloma so the rest of the thyroid had to come out.
The stroke was a blessing in disguise.
good luck Jenny

Hi Jenny, my story is the same as yours I had a MRI this year found out I'd had 2 strokes. Went for more tests and found the nodule. Am waiting for the results of my 2nd FNA they didn't get enough sample off the first, it's over two weeks now, I've a feeling it's bad news. How big was your nodule.

Hi Caz,
My nodule was 4.78cms and very vascular on the right side I wasn't called back for three weeks and silly me thought no news etc. Only to be told it wasa thyroid papilloma, but it had all been taken out. Still as there was another nodule on the left side they needed to take the rest out, followed by Radioactive iodine in isolation. The operations wreren't painful, but I am left with a chokey throat, perpetually trying to clear it, cough and no singing voice Am also on Thyroxine for the rest of my life, but no problems there so far. I was told if you are going to get cancerthat this is the best one as very curable!
good luck and if I can help, please ask. I would have liked someone to answer my questions beforehand.
Jenny

A papilloma is a form of thyroid cancer and the treatment is usually removal of the thyroid gland so you have to take thyroxine daily for life. No problem with that at all. I didn't feel ill before only very stressed and tired, but now feel much better with a lot more energy. One benefit was that the wonderful team at the Royal Marsden rcognised the difficulty I had at home looking after a 95 year old husband with Alzheimer's and bent over backwards to accommodate me with dates etc so we could arrange care.

Hi Kris,
I have had a CT, a CT with dye, MRI, ultrasound on neck and heart, heart monitor am sure there was something else lol,all because they said I labyrinth (if that's how you spell it) and was having slurred speech. My ticker is fine, they found 2 black spots on my brain on the MRI and said I've had 2 strokes in the past. They found the nodule have done 2 FNAs and waiting for results now. Am not sure which best.

Hi Kris
I didn't have any symptoms, they just found the nodule, it does swell my throat. But I've had a phone call of my doctor this morning to say no cancer was found, I've got to ENT on Thursday to see what my next step is.
