Having THR right hip early September - anaesthetic worries
Posted , 20 users are following.
I am having a spinal injection and sedation as I have low blood pressure and there were serious problems after my last general anaesthetic. I am really scared and don't want to be aware of anything that is happening. Does anybody have any advice please?

Hi yes you must be concerned but you are in.good hands . Im waiting for a hip replacement too but a a friend of mine just had hers done and she had low blood pressure and they put her out.. If they were really worried about you they wouldnt risk it until your blood pressure was better . I will be just as scared as you but just imagine how we are going to feel after xx

hi I had my OP in may this year and had spinal with sedation - lots do . just tell the anaethetist you want to be asleep for it and he / she will give you sedation so that happens. I had the best sleep during mine I'd had for a few yrs lol.
good luck

Hi Gill,
I was also quite scared about the block/sedation approach, but I get really sick after general anaesthetic so there was no other option. I asked my anaesthetist to make sure I got a good dose of sedative! Even so, I started to come round during the op, but I was pretty groggy, couldn't feel a thing, and couldn't see anything either as my head was completely covered in a sheet. I found the experience interesting rather than scary, to be honest. Also, I was completely recovered from the anaesthetic within an hour or so of getting back to my bed, so that was definitely worth it. When I had an op on my shoulder about 18 months ago, I had a nerve block and sedation then too, and was completely unaware of anything until I came round in the recovery room. So I would say don't worry. You'll either know nothing, or you really won't care!

hi Gill
my blood pressure had been low when i went for my pre assessment and i suffer usually with high blood pressure . nurse advised sorting out tablets which i did .
i had a spinal with no sedation on 30 th july about four weeks ago .
when i came back from theatre my blood pressure was low so i didn't have my usual tablets while in there .
they kept telling me drink more fluids as your blood pressure is low but i really didn't get it sorted until i came home , just by trial and error and taking my BP three times a day as advised.
i am on blood thinners for 30 days and these can make your blood pressure drop anyway so i would advise if not sorted at the hospital speak to GP on phone and he will advise . i also did that as i was worried but its settled back down now and i am taking my BP tablets as normal.
like you i was very scared and had already cancelled a few years back but u will find like i did the worry is worse when you are home thinking about it, but once you are in there you can voice your concerns to the consultant and and anethsetist and you will feel much better with their reassurance . good luck , u wont regret it , im 72 and wish i had it done before .

I had my op in July with the spinal injection. This was a doddle to get and all I said to them when getting the sedation was that I certainly didn't want to know what was going on and next thing I knew I woke up after the op.

I have had both hips replaced and had the anesthesia both ways. Give me the spinal any time it was great they sedated me and the next thing I remember was waking up in bed it was all over!!! Don't be scared, don't listen to anyone believe me it is a piece of cake you will be great. Good luck with the new hip - no more pain.

Hi GILL,,
i had my hip replaced under spinal epidural and it was wonderful, didnt feel anything and they sedated me so i slept through operation and didnt hear much, when i did thought it was a radio some where.
the pain relief is much better in recovery room than if you were to have a GA .
I highly recommend an epidural
GOOD LUCK

A spinal is really one of the best things that could have happened, infinitely better than a general. I had never heard of it before my op. You can have various amounts of sedation, I had none at all, I wanted to know what was going on, but you can have a light one so you can listen to music or the full effect so you just wake up at the end and do not know anything. The anaesthetist will be very helpful. I think in my case he wanted me to be sedated as I think he saw me as a trouble maker!

i was also very scared but spoke to the nurse before the op and she noted my anxiety on my notes. When I reached the theatre I was bordering on the edge of a panic attack, but was reassured that they would ensure that I would neither feel nor hear anything during the operation. This turned out to be the case and I just fell asleep, and wasn't aware of anything until I woke up in the recovery room. I felt very cold, but they used some kind of warm air blanket which made me feel very cosy. Just wonderful now to be pain free and to be able to go on long walks again in the countryside. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi Gill I had spinal and sedation for both of my hip replacements and thankfully was not aware of anything absolutely brilliant. Good luck

hi
I 2 have low blood pressure and the first to hip replacements i was put under as was a 5 hour op with huge problems , but the 3 rd they did a spinal and my recovery was sooooo much better , they lightly sedate you and you wake up in no pain as your numb , a way better way in my experience .
drink lots of water helps with low blood pressure
good luck with your op

Another vote for spinal and sedation. I was out before the block and next thing i knew i woke up in the recovery as if i had just had the best night's sleep!
One thing though, the spinal lasted for about 6 hours after I came around. During that time the nurses kept asking if i wanted pain meds and i kept saying no. However when the spinal wore off it was a bit sore so don't be afraid to ask for pain meds even if you turn them down the first couple of times. By the following day any pain had gone so just took the prescribed ibupofen and paracetamol.
