Having THR right hip early September - anaesthetic worries

Posted , 20 users are following.

I am having a spinal injection and sedation as I have low blood pressure and there were serious problems after my last general anaesthetic. I am really scared and don't want to be aware of anything that is happening. Does anybody have any advice please?

Hi Guys Thank you all so much fir taking the time to tell me about your experiences with the spinal injection and sedation. It has made me feel more positive and a lot less frightened. Now I can look forward to a pain free hip. I'll let you know how I get on and will no doubt be back here again with more questions. Thank you again for your support. Gill x

Just to echo other people's responses.

I decided at the very last minute (in the operating theatre) to have spinal with full sedation instead of a general anaesthetic. I was very scared.

It was brilliant - I was flat out throughout and woke up quickly afterwards feeling great.

No hesitation in doing this again if I have to.

    Agree with everyone else...

You recover far better from sedation and spinal block..

With the drugs these days, you'll get a combination, the last of which is usually propafol, also known as "milk of amnesia".

Regardless if you are conscious at all during the procedure, you will not be able to remember anything, until the anesthetist stops administering the drug.

You will feel as though no time has elapsed from the second that goes in until you are in the recovery room.

I too was terrified about being conscious in any way, this was a rational but unfounded worry!! Really this method is the way to go. It is safer, prevents nausea and will allow you to sit up and eat about an hour after your surgery.

I am not sure about no nausea, I had a spinal with no sedation and I was incredibly sick for a long time after my op. I threw up everywhere.

i felt sick after my op which was local and spinal but this was easily treated with anti sickness tablets. everyone and is different i have long since realised that there is no point worrying as it really is never as bad as our imaginations make it.

I had anti emetic injections as well as tablets even and I still threw up. I hardly ate a thing in hospital, not that it was that eatable. I was still feeling rough for a while after I got home. There was a lady opposite me who was pretty sick too.
