Head pressure, Brain fog, odd head sensation, feeling detached

Hi all,

I decided to become a member and make a post here after reading the forums for quite a while, great site by the way.

I am currently suffering with various symptoms and am in a bad way and just don't know where to turn any more so thought I would post here and see if anyone has any similar experiences or advice.

So first of I am male and 26 years old. I have been suffering with the symptoms in the title pretty consistently for about 2 and a half years now. I used to have some relief from the symptoms for a day or 2 here and there or maybe a bit of relief for a few hours in the day but recently the symptoms are pretty much constant and I cannot shake them.

I have an overall mild pressure feeling in the head, its not painful but is just very aggravating and feels really strange. I also have extreme brain fog with this and like a fuzzy head, there is a constant cloud over my brain and I never have any mental clarity or a clear head. My cognitive function is extremely poor now, my short term memory is non existent, its scarily bad. I often feel, detached from reality when the symptoms are bad and suffer from de-realisation, although I think this may be down to some anxiety and depression I experience when the symptoms run me down. I also get random sharp cramping pains in the head, they are quite painful but do not bother me so much as they only usually last a second or 2, it varies on how many I get of these each day but its usually less than 5. It often feels as though my brain is malfunctioning somehow and my cognitive function and senses are all out of whack, its hard to explain. There can sometimes be a build up of these symptoms throughout the day and by the night I can feel like I somehow how the flu without a fever? Like I have the head pressure, completely foggy headed, I feel super unwell, weak, sometimes even start feeling cold. Also have night sweats usually for about 4 or 5 days each month, there doesnt seem to be any sort of pattern to them that I can notice, so not sure if they are relevant. Another thing I have is ringing in ears which is mild but seems to have gotten worse recently if that sounds relevant at all. The main thing that gets me is the odd head pressure/sensation and the utterly life hindering brain fog, my brain feels like it is coated in a dark blanket constantly.

I do suffer from anxiety, I know many of these symptoms can be caused or made worse by these symptoms. I dont doubt that anxiety is a contributing factor and the way I think about they symptoms probably makes them worse but I have come a long long way with my anxiety, I have good control over it, I haven't had a panic attack in a couple of years, I manage to control most of my concious anxiety and stay in a positive mindset. No doubt I still have some subconscious anxiety underlying and I am working on that but I am not convinced this is the route cause of my symptoms. I am in therapy for my anxiety. I do not feel I will ever fully recover while I have these symptoms hanging over me though.

I have been to the doctor about these symptoms, although I do think I struggle to explain them or put them across very well in the doctors office. I have have blood tests which are all normal. I saw a neurologist couple of years back when this started, had a CT scan which was normal, they put the stabbing pains down to icepick headaches and thought the other symptoms were probably made worse by my anx/depression. Since then I went away and have been on anti depressants etc with no improvement of symptoms. I have also had a few ECGs and a 24hr ECG as I have slow heart rate and low bp so thought maybe the symptoms could be down to low bp and lack of blood to the brain, doctors do not think think this is the case and all my results came back normal. I have recently been back to the neurologist who is referring me for an MRI although he said he is sure there is nothing sinister and thinks the symptoms are probably tension type headaches and made worse by and previous drug use, he only put it down to the drug use when i told him about it though so it seemed like a convenient diagnosis. I forgot to mention I used to take drugs on the weekends socially, cocaine, ketamine and ecstasy on different occasions for a couple of years, I have had periods where I have felt ok since taking these drugs and do not really think they are the cause, I was not an addict this was just one or 2 nights a month at the weekends. So I have an MRI coming up but the neuro thinks it will be clear and obviously I hope it is and I am looking for other answers.

What could be causing these symptoms? Other than anxiety which i no can be a factor, but I have periods where my anxiety is pretty much non existent but these symptoms still build up out of nowhere and persist. I was thinking maybe some sort of allergy could be a possibility, I have tried cutting out gluten and lactose, this didn't seem to make much difference although I didn't stick to this for very long. I actually did a juice fast for 2 weeks with eating nothing other than fruit and veg juice put through a juicer to see if that would help but it didn't really give me any relief. Are there any other stomach issues that could cause this? I never have diarrhoea or constipation, my stools always float recently though, to the point of not being able to flush them, also whenever I have seen chance medicine doctors they check me out and say they think i have issues with digestion, i don't feel i have these issues but do wonder if there might be something in it.

Could there be something going on with the blood vessels in my head? Could it be a spine/posture issue? Some sort of epilepsy or electrical activity in my brain? I just have no idea now and am desperate for some relief. If anyone has any ideas or advice I would really appreciate it.

Oh just to add I am reasonably fit, I try go to the gym a few times a week and I do some weight lifting. I am a normal weight. I have been losing some weight recently which is a concern but I am still in a normal weight range for height and age.

Thanks for reading

I have had all of these symptoms and have hypothyroid disease, I think it is connected to that, it has become worse lately and after blood tests have vitamin D deficiency, I've been given vitamin D3 pills and have started to feel slightly better.

Recoverandheal: I too suffered from the fog and detached feelings you describe. I had horrendous panic attacks and couldn't breath. Upon describing these symptoms to my psychiatrist he decided to start me on benzodiazepines, clonazepam in particular. I've found that benzos are a wonder drug in clearing up the symptoms you describe but as with most "wonder drugs" there is a downside. Getting off benzos is a horrific experience. It is dangerous to stop cold Turkey. You must wean yourself off a little at a time over a period of months. Benzos are a magic bullet in clearing up the symptoms you describe but be aware you may have to take them for a lifetime . Good luck. I recently thought that I had successfully weaned myself off

Clonazepam but after not taking any for a couple of months I experienced a severe panic attack and ended up in the emergency room. If you ever decide to stop benzos I would suggest that you keep some on hand to handle these occasional attacks. People with severe panic attacks have receptor sites in the brain that do not function properly. Mine became screwed up due to childhood abuse. I was always in a fight or flight mode and had massive amounts of adrenaline doing major damage to my brain.

Hi John, my Doctor has given me a script for clonazepam but I have not filled it yet.  He said it should help my anxiety.  I am a bit concerned about taking it as I have read that like you have experienced it is hard to come off.  I don't want another problem on top of a problem already there.  Can you please tell me how long did you take it for?  My Doctor has suggested to not take it any more than 3 times a week.  I wish you all the best with your anxiety and any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Anne.

I was given a script of Clonazepam by my doctor before I knew what was going on with me. The Clonazepam actually made me worse. I had a very foggy head and several other symptoms that were mentioned above. Ended up finding out I have Hypothyroidism.

Hi Anne, My psychiatrist started me on half an mg.

3x a day approximately 7 years ago. As with medications of this type the body builds up a tolerance to it. I eventually was taking 1mg 3x daily. Clonazepam is extremely effective and if you are having an attack take a pill and you should experience relief & relaxation beginning within

20-30 minutes. My initial mistake was in taking it every 8 hours as was prescribed. The instructions should also say or as needed. Please follow the as needed instruction. It will work just fine. I recently decided to wean myself off clonazepam by taking lower and lower doses over a 2 month period. Your Doctor will give you instructions about how much to lower your intake over a period of time. I was taking much, more than your Doctor has prescribed Anne so if the dose your Doctor has prescribed works you should have a much easier time getting off of it. Take the clonazepam as your Doctor has prescribed, Anne, this medication is extremely effective. If 3x a week isn't working speak with your Doctor about raising your dose. Should you ever decide to stop taking it follow the wean off plan that I described above. As said your Doctor will give you a plan to follow. Even when you are weaned off keep some pills handy. When I was finally weaned off I still had panic attacks so I would take a pill. This happened a dozen times over a 6 month period of time but it finally went away. If you have an attack and have no pills it is a very, very unpleasant & uncomfortable experience. I, to this day keep a few pills on hand, just in case. Thankfully I haven't had to use them but always keep some on hand,

JUST IN CASE! Good luck Anne and if 3x a week works for you and at some point you decide that you do not need them any longer your wean off should be a walk in the park when compared to mine. I know that I am repeating myself many times over just keep some on hand and you will not need to face an attack with no relief. Good luck, the stuff works very well when taken AS NEEDED. I hope this helps you. If you need them now take them. Your quality of life will improve dramatically.

Rob, I too take levothyroxine for a Thyroid problem but unlike you I found clonazepam extremely effective. People react differently to medications. I am sorry that it wasn't the answer for you.

Hi John, thank you so much for your quick response.  I appreciate that so much and will try the clonazepam after the weekend.  My Doctor made a point in not to take it every day as he said that your body builds up a tolerance to it, so thanks again for telling me your about your experience as it backs that up.  I will get back to this site and let you all know if it helps me as I too have brain got as well as anxiety.  All the best John.  Many thanks, Anne.

I also have had the same/similar symptoms. Horrible sharp zapping pains on the side of my head that come and go. The fatigue is so bad I can’t even explain it. The muscle stiffness and pain is like I was in a car accident or ran a marathon.  My back, head, and neck are the worst. The fuzzy disconnected thoughts processes make me feel like I’m in a bubble being compressed by the pressure.  The feelings can cause almost an anxiety attack or a feeling of doom when it is at its worst.  Though there is no cure for me, I am at least great full that I know my diagnosis.  I have chronic reactivated ebstein-barr virus.   For more information on my diagnosis https://rawlsmd.com/health-articles/epstein-barr-virus-a-key-player-in-chronic-illness

Amy, have you had your thyroid checked. I was also told that I have what you have before my thyroid was checked. Once my thyroid was checked and I found out I have Hypothyroidism I found out the Epstein Barr virus plays in to Hypothyroidism.

I to had these symptoms and after seeing 3 different doctor I finally found out I have Hypothyroidism. What I am going to say next is very important. If you go to a regular doctor to be checked for Hypothyroidism all they will check is your TSH and that test is inadequate. You have to have your TSH,T3,T4, Free T3 and Free T4 checked. You will need to go to a endocrinologist to have these checked.

My symptoms aren't anywhere close to what you are experiencing but I do experience occasional brain fog, my eyes feel as though I haven't had any sleep and my stomach wasn't feeling well also. I do believe I am getting better but if all else fails I will be turning my attention to cannabinoids, as I feel the constant stress I go through working in Human Resources is causing anxiety. Maybe do some research into this area, you would be surprised as to what people are saying about how cannabinoids helped them with anxiety & depression.

Hi, I know this thread is over 3 years old, I just wanted to know if you have found relief. I have been experiencing you exact symptoms. I was referred for a MRI they found what is called Chiara Malformation. It is when part of your brain is squeezed through a section of your skull down by the back of the neck. The only real treatment is surgery.

My partner is suffering the exact same as you all are, and being passed from pillar to post, it's so unfair that in this day and age people are being left to suffer. The doctors have even laughed at us as if he was faking or a hypercondriac.
