hearing loss

Any thoughts.   My hearing is usually very sensitive - even the ringing of the phone makes me jump out of my skin. However I seem to be unable to hear lower frequency sounds and have trouble hearing the television or conversations where there is background noise.  Anybody else have these problems.  My ears are not blocked and seem to be clear of wax.  Had heard that it could be related to nerve damage from constant jaw clenching/teeth grinding ?  Anyone had any experience of this?

I have fibro, with temporomandibular disorder and tinnitus. I also have mild to moderate hearing loss and have just been given a hearing aid. However I am 68 years old so I'm not that surprised and wouldn't say it is necessarily connected

Thanks jayanne, So difficult to know what is connected and what isn't. Before diagnosis I had several teeth removed because of jaw pain but after they were removed I still had the pain so believe fibro was to blame for the pain.  Wish I had known before the extractions.

Hi Maggers. I had to see an ENT consultant last week as I have balance issues and horrendous tinnitus. I knew my hearing wasn't too good but I was absolutely gobsmacked when the result of my audio test showed only 30% hearing in my right ear and 80% in the other ear! I will now have to wear a hearing aid, an open field one, that will help with my tinnitus apparently!

I have had a burst eardrum in my right ear several times, but it has healed, the consultant didn't want to operate to see the cause of the balance problem as he felt this might aggravate the tinnitus, I am coping with my dizziness and imbalance at the moment, but that will be reviewed in 6 months time. I can't tell you if the hearing aid is helpful yet, I have to wait 6-8 weeks to have it!

I have 2 hearing aids and sensitive sometimes just to the human touch, which is the truth. When in my tribunal the man from DWP whom by the way if he was chocolate would have eaten himself! Yet again rolled his eyes at me, if we weren't in the tribunal office, I would have knocked him out!!!

Go and get it checked Kaz, because that's how I was! My Husband and children just thought I wasn't listening to them, I was beginning to worry that I couldn't process what was being said, and perhaps Fibro fog played a part in that, but in a way it was a relief to know my hearing is not right!

I am hoping after I get my hearing aid things will improve!

    Hi Maggers

I have something very similar - and I've noticed it's gotten more sensitive over the last couple of years.  I have real issues hearing properly if there is more than one source of conflicting noise - eg someone speaking to me over background noise.  I have exactly the same problem with the TV - I find I can't make out the clarity of the speaking but if I turn the volume up it's too loud and I too can't stand sudden loud noises like the phone or the doorbell.  No idea of the cause either - have had my hearing tested and nothing adverse was noted.  I don't particularly grind my teeth/jaw etc., either.  I dont know what to think really but maybe it's all part of my nervous system being 'on edge' with the pain syndrome and all senses are affected - for instance I've noticed I've developed a 'sweet tooth' and crave sugary foods which I've never ever done before, I've always hated sweet stuff.  One more bit of me falling apart sad

Just wondering do you have pain and discomfort in neck jaw teeth ear ?? my dentist couldn't find anything wrong even root canal and deep X-rays showed nothing but still had the pain in teeth ear jaw plus a whole host of awful symptoms which were said to be CFS/ fibro. Took years to find out the real diagnosis which is thyroid disease .

No Sylvia I had no pain, however when I was in my teens the earache was unbearable, I have 3 sisters and a brother and they all have some degree of pain. My ENT told me that it was inoperable so I now have 2 hearing aids! Yet again given hearing aids and left to it x

Thanks gang for sharing your thoughts. We are an odd bunch and I mean that in the nicest possible way! I know that some of my pain is related to teeth grinding and I do wear a shield at night to prevent it and had my teeth rebuilt by the students at a london dental hospital but the hearing loss is something different.  Yet another problem dear old fibro throws at us.

The 'odd bunch' - bit like the Brady Bunch but without the terrible haircuts (mostly - hahaha).

I'm going to do a little research into this type of hearing problem, I'm definitely not losing hearing as such, as I can hear quite minute sounds and background noises like distant roadworks etc., that others cant hear but my hearing is definitely weird.  I'll keep you posted if I find anything of use. xx

Thanks Loxie - now there's a different thread to get the grey matter going - what is the collective noun for a bunch of fibro folk?!?!?

An 'ouch' of Fibro folk maybe? Or a 'spasm' or maybe a 'twitch' of Fibro folk! smile

laughing here.  I like the thought of 'a twitch of fibro folk' hahaha.
