Heel Pain while sleeping on back

Posted , 11 users are following.

Just came back from physio and asked about the burning pain I feel on my heel and also how my ankle and lower calf feel like it has a l00 weight on it, while I sleep on my back.

She stated that is was not the surgery it is my back...she suggested that while I still have to sleep on my back I put a rolled towel under my lower back to alleviate some of the stress...she said I would have to make a few attempts to get the right dimention of the roll, ie. maybe a thin towell rolled 3 x or 4, or whatever gave me the most relief.

Will be interested in what some of your advice has been by physio.

Am starting my exercise to strenghen my operated leg so I can some down the stairs one at a time instead of the "old two step"!!!!

I'm just so lucky that I do seem to have unlimited physio through our general health care, whereas so many are just given a book to read!

Hi Patricia. Not got heel pain but have assorted pains and have been a bit dispondant over it all recently. Think I overdid walking last week. Phoned physio and was seen very quickly by a young girl who had me trying to do all sorts of things. She also seemed to think a lot of it was coming from my back but has given me more exercises to do and is talking about hydrotherapy sessions. Was a bit worried as she had me sitting on low seats, bending over and other things I thought were forbidden. She thinks I am over protecting my hip! Now confused. When do we stop using raised seats, toilet seats etc? She seemed to be saying that displacement unlikely now. What advice have you been given? I have exercises to strengthen my median gluteal muscle on operated side which is weak. Am 7 weeks post op. This is NHS physio.

You are 7 weeks like me and I was told today, NO bending, must still use raised toilet seat for another 3 weeks, no can inside but cane outside to balance, can't lift or carry my dog (l2 pounds) and still have to use stairs two feet to one step (though got exercise today to stregthen op leg so I can go up stairs normal).....yes it seems everyone gets different advice, but my advice is also sanctioned by my surgeon so I'm sticking with it...slow but steady...she may say you are coddling your hip but you are the one that has to live with the dislocation if it happens...I'm lucky the physio I go to specialize in hip, knee, shoulder surgery so they know what they are talking about....know how you feel when down I had two weeks like that, all kinds of aches and no serious pain like some people here but it was just something or another and it was getting me down....I think my problem was I was not getting out at all, only physio appointments, but this past week I've made arrangemnets to go out to lunch once a week so it gives me something to look forward to!  Also October lst physio said I can test drive on my driveway to see how strong my legs are!!!!

Thanks for that Patricia. That is my feeling. I certainly don't want to endanger my recovery by attempting things I am not ready for. Just wanted to know what others have been told. Sleeping still not great not being able to get comfortable. Sitting also not all that comfortable. Hope your heel pain gets better soon.

Hi Patricia---Sleeping on your back for 4 weeks was terrible.  I was up multiple times

during the night and went back and forth from bed to chair and back.  My back ached

and the only relief I would get would be to sleep with both feet flat on the bed with

my knees up or putting a roll under my knees forcing my back down into the bed.

When I fineally got off back-sleeping and was able to flip around in bed (even though

I felt some hip-discomfort) I felt much better.  At 9 weeks I still flip alot at night but it,

too, is getting better.  Both Denise and I use the pillow under the knees--it works for

us.  Hang in there-tomorrow is a better day!!!

I've had that heel pain issue and since replacement more OA in my feet and especially my surgery side foot.

I've gotten the bright idea of Vicks vapor rub and now use it nightly with thin socks and the pain is less. I often put the Vicks on my feet during the day too with socks.....I'm never without socks...

Vicks is an anelgesic and anti fungal so it's helping a fungal toenail I've had for many years....

I buy 2 8 oz jars from Amazon as I'm sold on it.....

My mom used Vicks when we were kids and most of us were raised with it...

Lots of changes in this gal's body.j

Joy I love vick's..used to rub a little under my nose when i had a cold at night so I would breath inthe "cold"..trouble is now I can't bend to put it on my feet or even put sox on...I didn't get one of those sox things as it was summer and I didn't think I'd be wearing any for awhile....told today still can't bend, must still use reacher and raised toilet seat.....very very slow progress....but thankful on cane now and can make and bring my own coffee to the table (seems like it took me forever to get that far but here I am)....

      Hi Patricia

Slight change of subject but when you said that you couldnt bend to put vicks on your feet reminded me.....did you ever check about the free podiatry because of that?

      Love

Trust me Eileen, there is nothing much free here...except for universal health care (which believe me is a gift from above compared to other countries), but with that said other services are different province to province, and then city to city and then down to municipality to municipality, and in the town I live in, Aurora, home care services are very hard to get, they are very strict criteria and even being on my own (totally) coming home from hip surgery I was not entitled to anything (even someone making sure I did not fall in shower with bench)...I had to wait until I could get a friend to come over and sit outside the bathroom to ensure if I fellsomeone was nearby...even meals, etc. no help available, so trust me no pedicures for me!!!!
