Heels

Hi,

I know that this may seem like a silly question but have any of the female mebers on this site been able to wear heeled shoes after knee replacement. When I say heels I mean fairly low block heels and at what stage could you wear them. I am not an avid wearer of heels but it is nice to wear them occasionally for certain social occasions.

I am going to a wedding next week and I know that I have to wear flat shoes as I will only be six weeks post op and I know that I am lucky to have made such good progress so that I can even attend the wedding.

I am just thinking of the future and whether I need to throw all of my shoes with heels out.

Any feedback would be welcome

I sincerely hope  not. I will be interested to see what is said about this. I really don't want to throw a lot of shoes away.

I agree with Elaine, I hope I have the ability to wear some kind of heel but I'm certainly not far enough along in my recovery to tell.

I too don't want to throw away my boots and shoes with heels.  Actually getting fed up of wear 'training' type shoes.  I've always worn a heels (not the high ones) with dresses so, feel they don't look right with flatties. I've had tnr on both knees, left knee Jan 2015 and right knee June 2015. Looking forward to hearing what other ladies have to say.

My Consultant said not for the first 12 months as your leg is unstable in them??? and they put pressure on your knee??? Then only if they feel comfortable and you feel confident???? ive bought lovely jeweled sandals or ballet pumps but both flat.

I wore heels to my daughter's wedding at 4 months tkr and they killed me!! Not because they were too high just because the shoes were so uncomfortable !! I did change into a pair of sandals with a block heel and they were much better. I find shoes with a small heel more comfortable for everyday wear. Hope that helps!! Xx

Hi Christine, I have had pkr on both legs, after the first one at eight weeks I tried to wear a low block heel , last about 7 minutes, agony, am now 7 was following  the second knee, my physio said best to build knees up first, we can defernatly wear them again just not worth it to quick, so plenty of walking static biking forwards and backwards ,swimming, and your exercises adviced, I to only wear heels on special  occasions , but I don't think it's  advisable to wear them to the wedding next week, I have bought myself a couple of really  sweet  Flat shoes for now, better than trainers and fine for a wedding, not worth the pain you'll get just for a couple of hours in heels you'll pay for days. 😥

Hi Christine, I always wore really high heels most of the time but since my partial I have been in trainers and flat sandals, yuk. I am 7months post op and I wore a pair of one and half inch wedges last night as it was my 60th birthday 'do' and I was determined to look a bit tidy, but boy oh boy am I paying for it today. My knee is so sore, plus my back is killing me. That showed me.x

I have found that any heel has mde my knees ache for many years, so no longer use them . .but if I were younger, I think I would risk a low heel on special occasons, but not as a general rule.  There do seem to be varying opinions on this . . but most I;ve read do seem to think that it does increase by quite a lot of the stress on the knee joint, and as we want them to last as long as possible, probably better to avid them, except for the special occasions. . . .However, my sister in law, who is 86 and has had TKR on both knees, continued wearing them until about a year ago when two falls mad eher more careful . .Her knees are about 15 years old . . .

I've only been able to wear small heels...but then that was the position before I had either of my knees done.  I can't ever see myself wearing stilettos again, to be honest.  I also have bunions, so finding comfortable shoes is hard!

I'm 3 weeks pre double TKR...  Really? No heels for how long? No one ever said a word about that! I'm a VERY tall woman and wearing flat shoes with a dress or skirt makes me look rather like I have the feet of a duck (huge).  Ten years ago I complained about severe pain in my 3rd and 4th toes, my foot doctor told me never to wear flat shoes again and I haven't had those pains since.  Even my flip flop sandals have a large wedge.  So this means flat, flat -- not even a small wedge? Looks like I might need to shoe shop too.

YES!! Keep your shoes you'll be able to wear them again. Break

yourself in slowly carry an extra pair of functional flats with you when your out. Wear a pair for as long as you can then change into your spare pretty soon you'll be able to get through a whole day. I started. wearing them around 6 or 8 wks out but I hadhealed really well with very little issues.

Typing on my tablet so paragraph set up changes when I send.

Try wearing wedges, they don't have to be high, but they will give you enough of an elevation for you to feel the difference, practice walking in them at home before going outside.  Kitten heels look nice too.  Keep a pair of fold-up ballerina shoes on your handbag and wear them when ever you can (at the reception and the evening do).  When sitting at tables for a certain about of time, I ask for a box of some sort to put your feet on under the table.  Catering staff can actually be quite responsive.  Do not throw out your shoes.  There will be a time when you will be able to wear them.  Just not yet, you have a long way to go

Hi Chris, I am 4 weeks post op and for the first time in my adult life I am wearing flat shoes ( at just 5 ft I needed  some extra height) I went to a family function at wkend and managed to wear some wedge heel shoes and walk with one crutch, not far just from car to restaurant, but I did manage with no ill effects.  I felt better as this was my first bit of normality. Back in flatties now!!

    Good luck with yr wedding.

Hi Christine, I am 76 yes old and nearly 9 weeks post TKR with

prospect of my other knee being done. I wore low block heel. court shoes for a short period yesterday with no discomfort whatsoever. I don't generally use sticks or crutches now but always take a folding stick with me in case I get overtired or meet up with rough or uneven ground.
