Hello there

Posted , 29 users are following.

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Good afternoon!  My procedure (not calling it surgery!) to remove screws is scheduled for 8:30 tomorrow a.m.  I am really hoping this will bring relief from at least some of the lingering pain.

Continued comfort and healing to all of you!  We'll get there!  And Bob, thanks for the shout out.  I'm shouting back! :-)

    WEEK 7 ( SEVEN IN HEAVEN )

    Morning.

Yesterday was my first official day back at the gym and it was nice to see my gym friends once again. Since I'm a big cardio guy, my workout wasn't the same since I wasn't able to do any yet. I was very surprised I didn't wake up sore today. I believe the ab crunches, knee pushes and dumbells excersises I did at home thru out my recovery kept me somewhat glued together.

Now for the good news. ( I suppose ) MAY 28th I'm going after second surgery. The biggest hassle is going to all my doctors for pre clearence again.  Anyway today I start pysical therapy and Iike anything else, I will be challenging myself every step of the way.

RENA - I must tell on myself. Didn't wear my sneaker yesterday. Wasn'y feeling it yet. You will be in my thoughts when it goes on.

ANITAGIRL - Don't make me have to jump a flight to come get you and walk you around Canada. Today let's take it up a notch!!!!

CARMEN - Way to work it. Nice going and hope to get to that place you are at soon.

MEL - Good luck getting those screws out.

KIM - Sounds like you will be back to enjoying life once again soon. Happy to hear that.biggrin

Today I will be praying for all my bunion pals to face today's recovery without fear. Nothing will be to hard for us to conquer. ''Let's do this ''

Morning Bob- good to hear you are getting back to the things you love! I tend to post on the Facebook page these days but dip in here every now and again. I've been getting back to more of a normal routine lately hence not posting up as much. I'm still having a few issues with actually walking but have my first physio appointment tomorrow afternoon so fingers crossed I can make some progress over then next week.

So good to read that Rena Joan Anita Carmen Mel etc etc are all making progress- we now all know that although it's a long haul we can see that we will get back to our lives eventually smile

Week 5 Day 5  Hey its 5/5 DAY!!

    Morning!!

Yesterday I got up everyhour on the hour and did my physio excercies as well as walked from the bedroom to the living room and back. Slow and steady wins the race, not sure who I am racing against. Today I will do the same but bump up the walk to doing it twice. It am getting a better but dont have it yet, according to husband, grrrrrr. He seems to think that I should put my BL foot down and bring the other one a big step ahead. So far I can only make it match up.

Husband is seeing an Orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow as he needs his knee replaced. Will see just how easy that will be. He seems to think that it will be one day down and he will be up like nothing happened. I guess we can 'dream'.

Bob, way to go on hitting the gym. Dont tempt me about walking around Canada eh! That is awesome news for your second surgery, get them over with and move on.  At least this time you know what to expect. Maybe you should have kept the scooter? Get that shoe on, YOU CAN DO IT!!

Rena, your doing awesome. Enjoy your day ahead. Just wait till you can get out and get some pretty sandals in time for summer.

Mel, I am thiniking of you and getting 'unscrewed'. Only the 'screwed' ones know what it means.

Kim, must be wonderful to get out in the sunshine and play in your garden. There is nothing like seeing life in the earth. Hopefully the driving will improve with time. In 3 months you will be so happy that you did this. I think its normal and we all go through the "what if I didnt". Its a normal response as it takes a long time to recover.

Beu (Patricia), Gotta love all the name changes lol.  Your doing great too.  Physio will help, I am sure. I am still struggling with the walk too but everyday it gets a little better. Keep up walking.

Carmen and Joan, hope your doing well.  Would love to hear from you to see how things are going with you both.  You have both helped us all through this process and we love to hear the progress so we have HOPE.

Have a great day, and enjoy the sunshine. Everyday we are one day closer to our goal.

    Week 10!!

So I made it to here and it's been another roller coaster of a week- some days my feet are fine and some days they hurt! Driving more and walking further but still only have one pair of shoes that I want to wear all day- must start looking for sandals now that we've booked a holiday in Turkey for early June.

So lovely to read all the progress that people are making and I'm so impressed with you all- keep on going strong and remember that it's two steps forward and only one step back from here!!

Forgot to say that over the last few days the swelling in my feet  isn't as bad as it was. I've also been really working my feet when I get home after work with a set of exercises .I   try to do these even when they really hurt-I think that really helps.

I'm back, loving catching up on everyone's news.  Week 8 for me, think I have been doing way far too much though as my foot is still swollen.  Father in laws funeral was a challenge, got up at 7am showered washed hair, blew dried it, etc got ready, left house at 9, chapel b4 10, then standing a lot in chapel, foot beginning to hurt and swell , couldn't do anything about it, then to grave, then back to hotel for refreshments , home and babysitting while my daughter went to physio.  So due a good rest tomorrow.

Thinking if actually trying to go to the local swimming, and follow in Bobs footsteps and try some things at gym.

Loved to hear all the ups and downs of the last week.  My laptop not working so i am on my iPhone therefor a pretty short post.

    WEEK 7 DAY 1

Morning all!!! Yesterday was first day at Physical Therapy. Pretty easy. One of my players I coached in High School was my theripist. So proud of him. He was excellent and I told him he went soft since high school. Too easy. lol. Have my second visit today and Friday.

Went to the gym again yesterday ( Day 2 ) Weight went from 188 - 193 in 7 weeks. My fighting summer weight is 178. My goal is to be at 180 by next surgery May 28th. Rode the Stationary bike yesterday so I will start riding hard to burn calories in a day or two once I get the blood flowing.

Rainy day here so it will give me more gym time.

Hope everyone has a great day.

P.S. RENA - My sneakers were on yesterday and walked most of the day, mostly on my heel tho. Lot's of swelling and pain.

Hi to Anita, Mel, Joan, Eillen, Jenny, Be, beau, Carman. This is a great group to in. My girls !!!!!! lol

Let's make something good out of this day!!

Bob, did you get advice from your gym about what you can do?  My gym told me to get a gp referral letter and then they will get an instructor to advise me.  I was swimming today, walking in the water, putting my full toe down, trying to get rid of the limp.  Your chats has just reminded me that dont have any trainers  (gym shoes), I will keep swimming until I can get some.

      Hi Bob😀

I have been told to start on the bike at the gym by my physical therapist. Going Saturday and can't wait. Went for a walk this morning, full weight bearing,heel/toe walking and so far feel ok.

cant wait to get back to running.

Good on you, but still remember to ice and elevate when your foot swells.

Huge leap ahead for you in just the last week, Bob! That is awesome! As one of your girls (too funny!) I'd like to say how happy I am for you, and for everyone else here who is doing so well!  Progress is progress, no matter how big or small.

Holy cow the removal of the 4 screws has left my foot with burning pain in the two affected areas, and I opted out of having the doctor send me home with a prescription for pain meds.  Hopefully just another day or so of this though.  I am going to get back to the gym just as soon as the pain subsides and I'm walking better again - I feel like I've been on hold for the last month.  No more excuses after this!

      Happy Continued Healing to all!

    Morning!!  Week 5 Day 6.

Yesterday I did twice the walk excercise (bedroom to living and back 2 times) as well as all the toe excercies. Am finding that all the little toes are movable and not feeling frozen anymore.  Now need the BIG toe to move it!!  Still swollen and feeling like a spongy pillow at the ball of my foot and right  under the toes.  I guess this takes a while.

HAve my family coming to visit me today.  They are bringing lunch. Should be a good visit. Its sunny out and we are supposed to reach 16C here today.  Even though company is here I will still workout my foot. THe walk is getting a little easier all the time but it sure takes time. SLow and steady.

Bob, way to go on getting back to the gym. Careful what you say to your PT he may just go HARD on you today. Hang in there, we have all gained weight but that is part of the process. Dont overdo it on the bike, you dont want a set back.  You always go hard.  Your an all or nothing guy from what I know of you.  Soon you will be back to everything, it just takes time.

To the rest, have an awesome day. Be kind to yourself. You have been through a lot with your foot and your foot has been through this with you.  Our life will return to normal soon.  Remember to elevate and ice as much as possible. SMILE it helps the process.

6 weeks 2 days for me now, and I'm having an ENOUGH day!!

On the 6 weeks day ( Tuesday ) I did some very light exercises, felt fine doing them and the rest of that day, but have spent the last 2 days with my foot feeling very hot and swollen, and having to have it up for most of the time. My incision rubs against the cast I think when my foot swells and is very uncomfortable. I was so excited to do some exercises, but now feel like it was 1 step forward and a giant leap back. So Bob I'm interested to hear how you are feeling after doing some gym. I won't try anything again till after my cast comes off on Monday and then think I'll go to my physiotherapist and gets an exercise routine from her - she did warn me that it would be a long and slow recovery, but I thought she was exaggerating!. I'm also looking forward to the x-ray next week - I'll be less afraid of pain when I see that the bone has healed properly and I'm not breaking it again by doing things!

Eileen great to hear your swelling is getting less, gives me some hope!

Leonardo da Vinci captured the essence of the strength and vulnerabilities of our feet when he wrote, "The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art."

Just had a message from my work, they are coming to visit me tomorrow, I think they think I am "at it" because I have been off soo long, well only 8 weeks, my sick line us up to 21st May and I am expecting it to get extended after that.  Think I will show them this forum to prove how long this op takes to recover from

I have got an Occupational Health assessment tomorrow  for my return to work on Monday (Monday will be week 7 day 5). I too think others feel we don't need so much time off. But even at this stage of my recovery I still can't walk properly or go downstairs facing forwards, and when I do try to walk I am experiencing pain in my foot as well as my lower back due to the way I'm walking which all impacts on our working day. Until people have this operation themselves they have no idea how long it takes to get back to normal, and how much pain/discomfort is involved.(I certainly didn't!)
