Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Just got back from PT and it was a lot harder today. She made me get on the bike barefoot for 5 mins. I did it!! She stretched my toe and it felt good. Lots of wiggling around. Put me on two machines. Got home and put on my compression sock. Feels like a nice hug. Going to work on heel toe walking this weekend. I can walk up the stairs now, woo hoo. Not down but working on it
Mom is coming for a sleep over on Saturday. Busy today doing laundry and cleaning up a little. Thought I might make a pizza for tomorrow, so making the dough today. This will be a first for me, so will see how it turns out. It needs to rest for 24 hours and then you can keep it in the fridge for 3 days. Will let you know.
Bob, that is som feast you have there and DIET rootbeer, ha ha too funny. Looks like Annette really does spoil you a lot. She sure is a Saint. Your doing great and your toe is so straight, how wonderful. GLad you had a nice visit with your Mom and I am sure the laughter did you both some good.
Have a great day to the rest of you. Enjoy the weekend with your family and friends.
If it doesnt CHALLENGE you, it doesnt CHANGE you.

Hi everyone. Just a quick post as I'm in the middle of my 2 weeks of mega activity before my holiday, and my computer is going very slow today. Been baking for our garden party/bbq tomorrow and as I stood so long in the kitchen I had shooting pains in my foot. Apart from that, walking, even downstairs is getting much better, and I can 'walk through' the pain.
I'll post more in a couple of days time, thanks to everyone who's mentioned me, I will reply soon!

Bob, you amaze me. I wish we lived closer so you could be my coach and get my plump rump in gear. I have lost 4 pounds in the last few weeks though! I think it is just from being more active and not having to lay around.
Anita, I hear you with the fear part. I also was very fearful of causing pain. One thing the therapist told me was "pain is pain, you are past the point that you will do any damage. Pain just lets you know you need to keep working". I really had to consciously talk myself through doing things that I knew would be painful, and then 9 out of 10 times there were just uncomfortable and not painful. Keep working it girl!
Patricia, how did you have the courage to go to the beach and not walk in the sand. Wow! You live in a pardise!
Glad everyone is doing well.
My lovely hubby passed a nice summer cold to me so I haven't been on hear or FB much at all. Beautiful day here today, 80 degrees, no humidity, blue sky! I love summer!!!!!

Hi All.....just lost a big post...DANG!!!! (You laughing Mel?) But luckily I had saved a big part of it....hope this doesn't post twice now like it has in the past.
Thought I'd update you all on the result of my visit to a podiatric surgeon today for a second opinion on what's going on.
You will recall that I had a chevron osteotomy and hammer toe arthroplasty 10 weeks ago. All is going well except that the slope of my toe is not corrected enough and it is sloping increasingly towards the 2nd toe, touching it and even starting to go under it again. It's definitely better than it was, but I am afraid it will cause another hammer toe (as it did originally), In talking with the surgeon a couple of weeks ago he told me that the correction he did in the area of the bunion is holding well and corrected the angle there satisfactorily. The problem remaining is that the upper part of the toe nearer the toenail is angled and to correct this an Akin procedure would need to be done. When I asked him why he chose not to do the double procedure, he said that he didn't like doing the Akin procedure. That because it dealt with a smaller bone there was great risk for problems to develop and for it not heal in good alignment. He doesn't like doing both procedures together because if the Akin part isn't all that successful, it will throw off the chevron part. Having read in a number of forums that so many others had double procedures done I thought this sounded strange and perhaps he was making an excuse for not choosing the proper procedure to begin with. He told me to come for another checkup in 8 weeks (i.e. at the 16 week mark) and that we would see what's what then. Suffice it to say that I no longer have confidence in the first orthopedic surgeon to do the Akin given that he doesn't like to do this procedure.
The specialist I saw today actually said that the work that the orthopedic surgeon did do was good. (Whew) He explained that the ortho's comment about not liking to do Akin procedures probably stems from the fact that he had a bad result with it at some time and did say that not all surgeon's necessarily like to to all procedures equally well. Makes sense. He understood my reluctance to go back to him given that he admittedly didn't like to do the procedure. Soo, I have decided I am going to have the Akin procedure done by the private podiatric surgeon I saw today who is one of the leading specialists in minimally invasive surgery here in Toronto Canada. He will also do a tendon release for the hammer toe to see if he can get it to lie flatter. Frankly, I would have done it all with this surgeon privately but it was alot of money and the orthopedic surgeon I went to has an excellent reputation. (actually confirmed by this surgeon who complemented the work he did) I have heard from a couple of people who had their surgeries done with the minimally invasive technique that they are very happy with the whole process and result. I am booked for the additional surgery on July 30th but if he has a surgery cancellation he will fit me in sooner. I am relieved, no longer fearful, and looking forward to the second and hopefully final part of the BTF !! (Big Toe Fix )
Am going to post this now before I lose it again. Read all you posts. Keep trucking all and have a good weekend !

Morning. Another beautiful day Sunny 75. Yesterday was a quiet uneventful day. Had a friend stop over. Annette was away for the day and I'm pretty much house bound since this time around since I'm not able to drive. Oh well. Such is life.
Foot is feeling better. Long ways away and the good thing is I just have to live this next 24 hr. Pain is probably a 3.
Think we need to start the Bunion Babe dictionary.

JOAN - 4 pounds is great. Shoot for a pound a week. Cut out carbs and sugar for two days and you will be amazed. Lot's of water kiddo. Let's ''DO IT'' today!!!!
CEO RENA - Show us how to finish the job. I kinda heard the same story from my surgeon. Maybe there is something we don't know that they teach them to say in med school. Hope you get your walking in. As important as brushing our teeth.
JEN JEN - Maybe one day we can have a ''BUNION BABE'' boot camp class. Shopping for 7 hours? Who does that ? LOL. Take care of that cold. feel better.
SPICE GIRL MEL - How are those sexy feet
Glad you checked in. Hope you doing well. When are you boating again? Hope the kiddies are doing ok.
Today I will pray my greatest gift is to help others in our recovery.
If we depend on the Rabbits foot foot for good luck, well you know what happened to the Rabbit.
Let's get it going!!!!!
Have a great day!!!

Limping , limping not RUNNING...........lol
Here I am. Today is another nice day. A little cool but sunny and blue skies. Husband is at work for a few hours this morning. We will be picking up Mom after lunch and then heading to a park to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Looking forward to having Mom for a sleepover. It sure is taking a long time for her to get better. She has been in the hospital for 12 weeks now. She suffers from Mental Illness. She is receiving another ECT (shock) treatment this coming Wednesday and I am hoping things will get better and better. We both need to be better in three weeks. We head to BC, where my Mom has a house by a lake to enjoy the Summer. We are expecting company, five people, from Europe July 16th for 2 weeks. I will be busy cooking for 8 every day, but looking forward to it. I am sorting out the menu and getting a little organized as much as I can. Town is 50km away so you have to on top of things so you dont have to drive back and forth. I have pizza dough in the fridge for tomorrow. I have never made it from scratch so here is hoping it turns out. Trying a few new recipes on us all before the company arrives. I have a few bananas I need to use up so thinking of making some banand bread this morning.
Everything seems to be going well here. Yesteray was a bad day for the lil foot but today it feels better. I am going to try the 30 secs in ice water and 30 sec in warm water 5 times, making it 5 mins in total. The Doctor recommended it and I havent started it yet. A friend of mine did and says it really helps and feels good too. Sounds cold to me but I dont have anything else to do, so will give it a try today.
Have a great day everyone. ENjoy the sunshine and your loved ones.

Back at work
2 gym clases - body balance and body combat,
1 hour in gym
30 minutes in swimming pool
long walk last night
and foot it is not swelling too much, getting 'zingy' (Bob new word for dictionery). So in all I would say I am just a little tired every day but full strength is just around the corner I think. My body combat class was just a bit too much for me, maybe leave that a couple of more weeks and keep up with the swimming.
Bob, did your surgeon say anything about your V, I really hate mine now, and it doesn't seem to be any different from what it was like in the beginning, and I wear my toe spacers every day. I see consultant again on Monday so I will ask him about it then, given Rena's relevations, I do keep thinking I will need more surgery on it, no good having the job half done.
Anita hope you have a great weekend with your mum, you are doing so well, love to read your posts, I don't get time to reply to everyone now. Jenny have you found that dress yet ?
Shoes - well I havent ever had the courage yet to try try any 'normal' shoes on in any of the shops, I think my feet are just too broad. Got a wedding to go to in 3 weeks but think it will be trousers for me.
Mel, Rena, Mary, Sharon, Kim hello to you - would love to see a pic of you on the boat with thosse sexy feet Mel.
So Glasgow today - absolutely chucking it doon. (raining really hard) just another typical day, get fed up with the weather, its so much nicer when the sun is out.
I will give you an update on what my surgeon says on Monday and hopefully he will say when my next op should go ahead, although I am thinking October would be good for me and that I would be up and running (limping) by xmas.
Ta Ta all my lovely friends

Morning. THIS IS TOUGH!!! Not feeling it at all today
So tired of the pain, boredom and nice weather I see from the inside. Summer is here and alot of fun things going on and I'm stuck inside icing and elevating. I do go out on the deck and can only do that for so long. That's it with down side. The up side is I'm very grateful and I will get thru today.
ANITAGIRL - Hope doing doing well and you enjoyed you mums sleepover. BC in July. You have room for Annette and I ? Sounds like it will be a blast. Hope your pizza came out well my friend.
JOAN - Glad your back to work and it looks like you are doing it in the gym also!!! Way to go. Haven't spoke to my surgeon about the V. He did say not to expect my foot to look perfect. As long as the pain goes away and I'm not looking all deformed, I guess I will be ok with that. So done with surgeries after this. Keep up the good work.
SPICE GIRL - Thanks for the wave and I'm unusaully envious. Enjoy that boat and show off those sexy feet. You worked hard for them. Get your excersise in somehow!!!
Shout to RENA!!!!
Although moma told me there would be days like this, we need to tie a knot at the end of our rope and hold on.
I pray we must face these dull days with courage.
Love to the "" BUNION BABES''
ZINGY
TA TA to the list

Had a lovely day with Mom yesterday. The sunshine and fresh air did us all good. It was funny, we are at the park and Mom says “Didn’t we come to walk” lol. I told her to go ahead and I would watch. I couldn’t do anymore. I did overdo it. My foot was very swollen by the evening. I never seen it like that before.
I did the ice water warm dip, and it feels really good. Wakes up the foot. Will do it again this morning before we head out. Supposed to be a nice day again here. We are going to Spruce Meadows, in case anyone has heard of it, to watch the show horses jump. Will go for a few hours and then the foot will need to head home. Just getting out is a big treat for me and I am sure for Mom too. Making a nice breakfast before we go.
Joan, Sounds like a busy busy busy week for you. Way to go on your lil foot surviving it all. I agree with you to tone down some of the activities. No shame on having to elevate the foot. Better then feeling the pain and swelling too much. We need to baby our foot for a while more. So glad your getting back into the real world again, so looking forward to that.
Bob, hang in there. Everyday your one day closer to winning this race back to life as you know it. Your doing great!! Enjoy the sunshine as much as you can, it will do you and the lil foot good. Remember you did this one and you can do this again. Thank goodness you don’t have more feet, lol. I think it is harder on you this time as it is your right (driving) foot. It does take you independence away. Hang in there.
Rena, let us know what the doctor says. Shaking my head just reading your post and hoping for the best for you. You have come a long way. Did the pain you had pre bunion all go away.
Waving at the rest of you and wishing you all a pain free bunion less day. Look at our feet and walk proud!!
