Hello there

Posted , 29 users are following.

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

WEEK 11 (LF) DAY 12 (RF)

Morning. Another hard day yesterday and woke up in alot of pain. Foot pain and back pain. On a hard run these last few days. Going to hopefully make it out to see mom today, she's off the beam so that makes things more difficult. Feel like I'm really being tested. Have to face these difficulties not let them master me. Going to scroll back and see how I was doing on day 12 last surgery.

ANITAGIRL - Glad you had a good day with mom and your getting your life back. You did the work and now you are recieving the payoff. EASY DOES IT!!!! (imagine me saying that )

Sout out to the ''BUNION BABES''

JOANNIE V, RENA, SPICE , RENA, KIM, JENNY

    Hope everyone are doing well.

I'll expect the best today even though the outcome is out of my hands.

We are always better then we think we are!!!

Hello Bob, don't know if you read my message on this post board but I had bunion and hammertoe surgery on Nov. 27, 2013 and once I got out of the big black post op boot I got 2 ruptured discs in my back. Got drop foot on my "good" foot and had to have surgery to repair the discs. Been going thru therapy/rehab on the back and leg since January and it has been hell. I'm a 65 year old single female. The neurosurgeon said the boot was the culprit which shifted my hips and caused the discs to rupture...it will be 1-3 years before the nerve reconnects to my leg & foot. The podiatrist should have put me in a lighter, lower profile post op shoe. I hope you don't have a ruptured disc! By the way, I live in the USA (Texas).

    WEEK 10 DAY 3

Waving at all my bunion less friends,

Yesterday I really overdid it.  Put 3,000 steps on my pedometer and my 'pineapple' looking foot showed it by the end of the night. After taking Mom back to the hospital I did the foot dip, (Ice cold water and warm warm 30 seconds each for a total of 5 min). Felt so good and was able to actually walk more and better. Going to work on that more today. I still have a problem walking and seem to be side and heel walking. Not sure why I dont walk normal. I can see why walking barefoot is better then in shoes but can only do it on the carpet as the floor is too hard.

Not much planned today. I am starting back on the Weight Watchers eating plan today. I finally hit the walk and dont like the weight that I accumulated while on this journey but its time to get back into control. Looking forward to it. This morning I am having Canadian Back Bacon, Avacado, boiled egg, tomatoe and some fresh berries for breaky, yumm. Sorry just had to let you all know so I really do it!! NO MORE JUNK FOOD for this body. No more excuses.

Bob, I cant beleive you wrote that "Easy does it". Do you listen to yourself ever? Sheeshhhh, you need to walk the walk before you talk the talk. Have a nice day with your Mom. Hang in there, your doing great, everyday is one step closer to getting better and having SEXY feet, lol The payoff will be sweet!!

To the rest have an great day as its another week rolling on for us all.

Lets get ready to show off our toes this summer. Its been a long time. Plan on something nice just for us after all we have been through, we deserve it!!

Hi Guys!  WEEK 10 DAY 5

Lunchtime break.....waving to all of you.  Had a wonderful weekend particularly because I'm still elated my toe issue will be fixed...such a relief to me. I do want to mention that yesterday I was in most of the day because of crummy weather and was wearing a flip flop type sandal with some weight to it.  It felt comfortable on but by evening, when I put my feet up, I noticed that my ex-bunion area was twinging and looked more swollen than usual....it was so swollen in fact that I thought the darn bunion was coming back! Thought it really strange this was happening as it had not happened during the whole recovery until now. Didn't put two and two together until the penny dropped this morning that the only thing I had done differently was to wear those sandals for the first time since surgery so it must be the sandals !  DUH...idea ....Then I remembered that I had read at some point that wearing flip flop type footwear can cause you toes to grip harder to keep the thing on. Learned my lesson....those sandals will have to weight until next year to see the light of day again.

Anita.....up to 3,000 steps!  WTG girl ! smile  I am, however, a little concerned that you are still doing the side/heel walk for alot of those steps.  It may be possible you are actually aggravating the foot by doing this now  because it is not natural for the muscles and tendons. Can you do a heel to toe if you walk very slowly? If not, can you work on this with the physiotherapist? Like you  I can't walk barefoot as I have  only wood floors and at my age the skin on the bottoms of my feet is much too thin..it kills !  And WTG with the Weight Watchers....I'm tryiing too to get some of this weight off too..redface

Bob....our Bunionless Bob...what you are going through is like having a miserable pregnancy or a  birth with a difficult aftermath. You gotta do what you gotta do, like it or not, and it dictates your life for lots of weeks/months. BUT the product of all you suffering is so worth the suffering and gives such pleasure for the rest of your life that you eventually forget about all the pain and inconvenience.  How else do you think there can be so many kids in this world ??? LOL  As you say to us all the time....keep pushing through each day as it comes to reach that brilliant reward at the end ! We're here for you our Bob !lol

Joan.....hope your second week at work goes well....you had such a successful first week of getting back to regular life. Doesn't it feel fabulous to no longer be foot centred?  Waiting to hear from you about what the surgeon  says today.  Hope you'll have time to post after your busy day.

Jenny......hope you're recovering well from your cold and your 7 hour shopping escapade. 7 hours???  Yikes !!  It boggles my mind!  LOL

Hi to Ma Belle Mel (the French ma belle....not the telephone Ma Bell), Patricia in her paradise, Kim who I see in my mind dancing and anyone else still with us who slips this addled brain at the moment.

    Have a great day/evening all !

    Week 11 day 5

Well, getting thorough all the busy stuff. We had a big garden party/bbq on Saturday which went really well, and luckily the thunderstorms were gone by lunchtime. I discovered that standing on my feet in one place too long makes them throb and ache so much that even a bath didn't help. It must be because of all the sitting I've been doing over the past 11 weeks!

Yesterday the band job at a local Rural Pastimes event went well too though it was very hot.I have gone off playing (tenor saxophone) since my operation and need to do more performances to get back into it again.

This evening I danced! I did one (Morris) dance in a very flat- footed manner at a local pub. I wasn't worried about doing any damage but it was a little painful so I didn't dance on my toes as I'm such a wimp. I think when I see the consultant on Thursday he will tell me to do more on my toes to help with loosening up the toe.

Rena- I've tried wearing flip flops but I can't keep the left one on.I hope your planned Akin procedure goes well

Accidently posted before I was ready!

Rena, as I was saying, I hope the Akin procedure goes well and makes your toe just how you want it

    .

Bob, sorry to hear you're in such pain. It sounds like Annette is looking after you really well, the food she cooks for you sounds lovely!Hope you managed to see your Mum today.

Anita, the side of foot walking is not good. When I was doing that I had bad back pain and ankle pain.As Rena says , if you walk slowly and concentrate on heel to toe steps it really helps though can be very frustrating for the person you're walking with!

Joan, sounds like you're really busy! Gym, work etc. phew! Will you definitely need another operation to correct the V shape?

Hello to Mel, Jenny, Patricia , hope you're all healing well.

p.s. I've also lost a few pounds recently, but expect to put them on again when I go on holiday for 2 weeks next week. I must step up the exercise!

WEEK 11 (RF) DAY 13 (LF)

Morning. Yesterday was a complete shutdown, nothing day. Cable was out on top of that so no TV. Annette was working so I sat all day on the couch except for my morning daily ABCRUNCH, PUSHUP, DUMBELL routine.

Today I will be up and out although I still have alot of pain, burning, numbness and throbbing. Going to make another attempt to go see mom at the nursing home. Not driving this time around is making this surgery so much more difficult.

Anyway, I'll keep trudging ''ONE DAY AT A TIME''

ANITAGIRL - Proud of you getting your workout in. Go at it again today!! Glad you had a good day with mom!!!! Bumb it up another few minutes everyday and quality steps, not quanity.

SHARON - Your really going thru it. I feel your frustration. Age is a number and hope you are doing some kind of rehab. Don't give up on it. Texans are tough to keep down!!! Glad you are here with us. Good support!!

RENA (CEO ) You made me smile. Never been pregnant and I sure feel like I'm going thru a tuff pregnency tho. Somewhat like triplets. Won't let it get me down today. Thanks for the ''PICK ME UP''. Needed it after yesterday. Probably the longest day yet.

Kimmy - Yes, let's step up the excersising.  ''THE HOUSE OF FAILURE IS BUILT WITH NAILS OF EXCUSES'' LOL . Keep dancing to the beat. Are you still doing the towel crunches? Throw a few sets in when you can. Keep working it.

Shout out to JOANIE V, PATRICIA, JENNY & SPICE GIRL.

    WHERE'S SPICE!!!!!!!

Praying for all the ''BUNION BABES" .

Remember, ''Nodody who ever gave their best effort regretted it''

    WEEK 10 DAY 4

Morning!!! I am working on hard on heel toe walking but it sure is slow going. By the end of the day my foot is very sore. Love that I can more around the house, this laying on the couch is hard mentally and physically too. I was chatting with Bob on FB and he encouraged/coached me and I did 20 mins on my recumbant bike. WAY TO GO!!  Cant beleive I did it, but I did. Will do it again today. Not sure what it does for my foot??

My eating was really healthy yesterday and looking forward to another good day today. I made some Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip muffins for hubby. I would rather he eat them then other stuff. As long as I dont taste them I can stay away.

Rena, thanks for the encouragement on walking. I will try harder. The ball of my foot seems to be going down a little every day. Is yours still there, or is it all gone? Stay away from the sandals. I know we all want to show of our feet after all we have been through, but there will be time for that. Your doing awesome and cant wait to be where you are.

Kim, so nice to hear from you again. Glad things are going well with you. Your garden party sounds nice with all your friends. Dancing WOW that will be the day for me. Unreal that the foot still needs a rests and lets you know it too. What kind of bath do you give your foot? I was told to do the ice water/warm water dip, is that what your talking about?

Bob, hang in there bro, your doing awesome. One day at a time. Soon this will all be a flash in history and perhaps the mind will wipe it all out (delete). We have good days and bad days. The bad days are there to get you to SLOW down and rest up. Remember your poor feet have been through 2 controlled accidents recently on different days and months. Enjoy the visit with your Mom today. I know exactly how hard it is being under 'house arrest'. Make the most of the sunshine and get out everyday just to clear the mind and have the sunshine shine on you.

Sharon, so sorry to hear about the pain your having. Life isnt fair sometimes. Dust yourself off and win this.  Its a long haul, I understand that and even longer with your issues you have been having. This is a great place with people from all over the world. There are 3 of you from the USA.

To the rest, hiding and reading have a great day. We can do this, together we will WIN the race and be back to our normal life.

      Hi Anita,

It was just a nice hot bath (?bathtub) not just my feet. I'll try the ice water/warm water dip next time I get the exessive aching, because the bath didn't help that much.

I must admit the dancing was a timid attempt as I was just trying out my foot, but I'm please I did it, and will gradually do more from now on.

Ok, here is my advise for the day, week, month..whatever.  DO NOT WEAR THONG SANDALS SHOPPING FOR 7 HOURS!  I could kick myself now.  I have really set myself back.  The pad under the big toe and my second toe are so sore I can hardly put weight on them.  I know nothing is messed up, just protesting.  I wish I could take Ibuprofen, that would help with the inflammation but also, it eats my stomach.  I am elevating and icing.  This too shall pass. I hope!

Bob, not much sense in saying to slow down...lol

Anita, am going to try your ice water, warm water trick today.  Is it really ice water or just cold water?  Ice water scares me!

Hope everyone has a relatively pain free day!

      Jenny

This was recommened by my surgeron and I didnt want to it as the ice water really scared me.  Finally a friend convience me to try it and I did. You need two containers. I use a small cooler for picnics for the cold one and a plastic container for stuff. As long as your foot fits into it and it holds water.  No need to buy anything special. I put it in the bathtub and sit on a chair with a timer.Use cold water and ice cubes and I also put in a few ice packs in the water. The other one put really warm water. Then start with the cold, time 30 seconds and then 30 seconds into the warm. Go back and forth 5 times, ending with the cold ice water.  At first I thought the ice would be too much to take but it wasnt. My foot really likes it and I feel like I can move it more. Let me know how it goes for you. Dont be scared, JUST DO IT!! It will make a big difference and your foot will love it.

    MONTH 5 (!)

Spice Girl is here, parked in front of the computer.  Parked here with ice on my dang foot!!  What the heck?  It has really been bothering me the last couple days.  I "think" all the walking back and forth from the boat to the clubhouse on the pier in my boat shoes does not make my foot happy.  I'm fine while on the boat, even climbing around.  But we do make a lot of trips back and forth, and sometimes carrying heavy items, so there is added weight.  I may need to start putting the boot on when doing all the back and forth walking.  But I suppose I can look at the walking in general as a little bit of exercise?  Several people mentioned that I was limping. sad

Bob, so sorry you are struggling.  I think it may have been around 6 weeks the first time around that things started sounding much better for you.  And that was with dreary weather and the ability to drive, unlike this time.  I know mentally it has to be much more difficult.  But this too shall pass, just like the first did!  Keep doing what you do, and before you know it, you'll turn the corner!

Anita, I've thought about doing your ice/warm water foot immersion.  Today I have an ice pack with me at work and it feels pretty good!  Glad you're continuing to make progress.  The setbacks are discouraging, but they do tend to be temporary (telling myself this also as I type!).

Joan, I managed to take a picture of my feet on the boat.  Amazing how many tries it took to get one I was OK with.  Geez!

Waving at the rest of the Bunion Babes!   Hope everyone is having a good Tuesday!

    Spice Girl Mel!
